Sharon Van Etten Covers Nine Inch Nails’ ‘Hurt’

Sharon Van Etten has had a fairly active year, all things considered. She celebrated the 10th anniversary of her sophomore album, Epic, last week, and also digitally released “All Over Again” for the first time as well. Earlier this year, she performed with Fountains of Wayne as part of the Jersey 4 Jersey COVID relief fundraiser. The singer-songwriter has now teamed with the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline as part of National Suicide Prevention Month and shared a cover of Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.” “It doesn’t make you a weak person for thinking about your darker times it actually makes you stronger by being vulnerable and open and sharing who you are with the people you care about,” Van Etten said in a statement. Check out her version of “Hurt” below. [embedded content] You Deser...

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross won an Emmy for the score of Watchmen. The duo won the Emmy for Outstanding Music Composition from the show’s first episode. Nine Inch Nails’ Soundtracks for Quake and The Social Network Reissued on Vinyl

Over the past decade or so, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have become two of the most sought after composers in Hollywood. Now, two of Nine Inch Nails’ earlier soundtracks have been reissued on vinyl. In 1996, Reznor composed the score for Quake, a first-person shooter game and it’s on vinyl for the first time. Additionally, 2010’s score for The Social Network has been reissued on 180g vinyl. Reznor and Finch won a 2010 Academy Award for Best Original Score for the film. Reznor and Ross were nominated for an Emmy this year for their work on Watchmen. Check out the tracklisting for both soundtracks below. Six Additional Nine Inch Nails Members to Be Inducted Into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame

While there’s no Nine Inch Nails without founder and creative visionary Trent Reznor, he’s had a stellar, if revolving supporting cast, and six of those musicians — Atticus Ross, Robin Finck, Chris Vrenna, Danny Lohner, Ilan Rubin and Alessandro Cortini — will be honored at NIN’s 2020 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, SPIN has confirmed. They’ll all participate in the induction proceedings, to be broadcast on Nov. 7 during an HBO and HBO Max special. The Rock Hall doesn’t always include bandmembers who have left a band, or who were not part of a group’s most influential period, and it’s unclear how the decision was made to induct these NIN musicians. Filter’s Richard Patrick, who started his career with NIN, will not be inducted, nor will Grammy-nominated keyboardis...

The 25 Best Soundtrack Albums of the 1990s

In the 1980s, music and film collided for cross-promotional blockbusters both transcendent (Purple Rain) and transcendently cheesy (Footloose). In the ‘90s, soundtracks continued to sell in the millions, capturing cultural moments like the Seattle grunge of Singles or the Britpop and electronica of Trainspotting. Auteurs like Quentin Tarantino and Wes Anderson reached deep into their record collections to set the mood while movies like Above the Rim and Menace II Society pioneered the concept of soundtracks as hip-hop mixtapes. A great soundtrack can propel an unsuccessful single, like Seal’s “Kiss From A Rose,” to the top of the charts, or revive a decades-old hit, like Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody.” It can also push a cult singer-songwriter like Elliott Smith or Aimee Mann to an Oscar perf...

Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor Working on New Music After Canceling Tour Plans

Nine Inch Nails were supposed to hit the road this year, so says Trent Reznor. But, for obvious reasons, those shows aren’t happening. Reznor explained more (in all caps) on the band’s website. “I WAS JUST REMINDED TODAY MARKS THE TWO YEAR ANNIVERSARY OF WHEN WE MADE YOU SHOW UP IN PERSON FOR THE COLD AND BLACK AND INFINITE TOUR. STRANGE TO THINK ABOUT WITH THE WORLD THE WAY IT IS NOW.  I LOOK FORWARD TO THE DAY WE CAN ONCE AGAIN SAFELY BE IN THE SAME SPACE AND SHARE THE EXPERIENCE OF SCREAMING AT THE TOP OF OUR LUNGS AT EACH OTHER,” Reznor’s statement started. He went on to say that the tour would have taken place this fall with Jehnny Beth serving as the opener. However, all isn’t lost. Reznor shared that he’s working on some more film scores and new Nine Inch Nails material. More s...
