Petition Calls for GWAR’s Oderus Urungus Statue to Replace Robert E Lee in Richmond

GWAR have been their usual unusual selves during quarantine. They’ve appeared on CNN giving an update to pandemic life, encouraged fans to drink bleach (as a joke of course) and popped up in a Frank Iero video. That said, as statues of Confederate leaders and other historically problematic figures are being torn down and replaced worldwide, GWAR fans have a request. A new petition is circulating the web, calling for a statue of GWAR’s late leader Oderus Urungus (Dave Brockie) to replace a preexisting statue of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee in Richmond, Virginia, which is also the band’s hometown. While the notion of taking down statues shouldn’t come as a surprise after one of slave-trader Edward Colston was tossed into a river in England and a Christopher Columbus s...

Andre 3000 Drops New Merch Benefitting Movement for Black Lives

OutKast fans are rejoicing at the return of Andre 3000. And while 3 Stacks hasn’t hopped on a new track in a bit, the legendary lyricist instead resurfaced to use his platform to raise money for the Movement for Black Lives, an organization committed to ending police brutality and racial injustice. And he’s doing it with some new merch: 13 variations of a long-sleeve T-shirt to be exact. “Something very important is happening all over the world and it is happening to all of us,” Andre wrote on his site. “How does it make you feel?” “For three days, a selection of shirts inspired by a collection of my jumpsuits will be sold and 100% of net proceeds will be donated to Movement for Black Lives to aid in their fight to end police brutality and racial injustice against Black people. Tom Morello Roasts Fan Who Can’t Believe Rage Against the Machine Are Political

On Tuesday, a Twitter user who has since deleted their account said that Rage Against The Machine — a band whose name should speak for itself — and Tom Morello were “ruining” their fan base by sharing “political BS.” “I used to be a fan until your political opinions came out,” the fan wrote. “Music is my sanctuary and the last thing I want to hear is political BS when I’m listening to music. As far as I’m concerned, you and Pink are completely done. Keep running your mouth and ruining your fan base.” Well, Morello responded. And that’s when Twitter did its thing. “Scott!! What music of mine were you a fan of that DIDN’T contain ‘political BS,’” Morello said. “I need to know so I can delete it from the catalog.” Scott!! What music of mine were you a fan of that DIDN’T c...

Grammys to Change Urban Contemporary Category to Progressive R&B

The Grammys’ Best Urban Contemporary Album category will now be called Best Progressive R&B Album, the Recording Academy announced on Wednesday morning (June 10). “There were some uncomfortable feelings around [the term urban],” Harvey Mason, Jr., chair & interim president/CEO of the Recording Academy, told Billboard. “I think it’s been a gradual shift within in the R&B community. It’s been discussed [within the Academy]. It’s been a little contentious at times.” Republic Records announced last week that the “urban” will no longer be used. But Mason pointed out to Billboard that the deadline for awards and nomination proposals was due back in March. So removing “urban” from the category was already happening before the record label’s announcement. Aside from the category change...

Sia and Maddie Ziegler Bring Bubbly Performance of ‘Together’ to Tonight Show

The longer people have been staying at home, the more musicians have been putting more creativity into their livestream performances. Sia proved that during her performance of “Together” on The Tonight Show: At Home Edition last night (June 9). Donning her signature wig in pink and yellow, Sia teamed up with her frequent collaborator, dancer Maddie Ziegler, and brought a whimsical party to our screens. From filling the room with bubbles to having a pancake fight, Sia gave us the same energy that she exudes in one of her crazy colorful videos. They even give a shout out to Jimmy Fallon’s line of children’s books. “Together” is the first single off Sia’s directorial debut, Music, based on Dallas Clayton’s children’s book. Aside from sitting in the director’s chair, she also penned the 10 tra...

ARMY, K-pop Fans Become an Unexpected Ally to American Protesters

As American protesters took to the streets to mourn the death of George Floyd, they found an unexpected ally: K-pop fans. Floyd died May 25 after a police officer pressed his knee into his neck for several minutes even after he stopped moving. K-pop fans galvanized by police brutality and political disappointments swiftly mobilized, re-purposing their usual platforms and hashtags from boosting their favorite stars to backing the Black Lives Matter movement. They flooded right-wing hashtags and police apps with short video clips and memes of their K-pop stars. In a tweet Thursday to its 26 million fans, South Korean boy band BTS said it opposes racial discrimination and violence and announced a $1 million donation to Black Lives Matter. Fans quickly followed suit with the hashtag #MatchAMil...
