Underground rap king Pharoahe Monch has formed the new group th1rt3en with guitarist Marcus Machado and drummer Daru Jones. Their first album, A Magnificent Day for an Exorcism, arrives January 22nd, and the trio has offered a preview with “Fight” featuring Cypress Hill. Monch has been a favorite of hip-hop heads since the 1990s, when his machine-gun flows bolstered the duo Organized Konfusion. Now, he’s joined forces with Machado, a former child prodigy who’s performed with Anderson .Paak and Pete Rock, as well as Jones, who’s handled drums for Jack White. Together, they specialize in a fusion of rap and rock, with Machado’s guitars providing a searing counterpoint to Monch’s lyrical assaults. In “Fight”, they use those sounds to face down the epidemic of police brutality. It opens ...
Teenage Fanclub have announced a new album called Endless Arcade. Their first full-length since 2016 is due for arrival next year on March 5th. The forthcoming LP follows Here and marks the Scottish group’s first since the 2018 departure of founding member and bassist Gerard Love. In a statement about the project and its name, the band’s Raymond McGinley said, “I think of an endless arcade as a city that you can wander through, with a sense of mystery, an imaginary one that goes on forever.” He continued, “When it came to choosing an album title, it seemed to have something for this collection of songs.” Altogether there are 12 tracks on this new collection, including lead single “Home”. A jangly tune full of longing, it finds the veteran alt-rockers wondering if they’ll ever find comfort ...
Some say rock music has gone the way of the Neanderthals, but HAIM are bringing it back with their new song “Feel the Thunder”. Produced and co-written by Ariel Rechtshaid, the track appears in the upcoming animated caveman comedy The Croods: A New Age. With booming drums and guitars as flashy as a lightning storm, “Feel the Thunder” is a throwback to the go-go 1980s. As the band told Rolling Stone, they wanted to evoke the glamorous swagger of Guns ‘n Roses. That’s one of the reasons they tapped Rechtshaid, because according to Danielle Haim he is “the biggest Guns ‘n’ Roses fan.” She said, “He’s obsessed with them – he went and saw them on their most recent tour a bunch of times. And so I figured that that’s what we were looking for. We were like, ‘Let’s get Ariel.’ But I’d nev...
Last month, The Antlers returned with their first single in six years, “Wheels Roll Home”. Proving their comeback isn’t just a one-time affair, the indie rockers have shared another new song, “It Is What It Is”. While the preceding offering saw The Antlers overjoyed at the thought of reuniting with an old friend, today’s single is a more sobering listen. On it, frontman and lead songwriter Peter Silberman is forced to come to terms with an unexpected, and oftentimes less-than-ideal, reality. “‘It Is What It Is’ is a song about hindsight. It considers what might have changed had you handled things differently back then, and the reluctant acceptance that it’s too late for all that now,” he explained in a statement. “It’s the inevitability of changing seasons, transitions that feel like loss ...
On Monday, Rico Nasty formally announced her debut album, Nightmare Vacation. Due out in just a few weeks, the project is being teased now with “OHFR?”, a new single that reunites the young rapper with Dylan Brady of 100 gecs. Over the summer, the two acts joined forces on Rico track “iPhone”, as well as on 100 gecs’ “ringtone” remix alongside Charli XCX and Kero Kero Bonito. Not unlike those previous offerings, “OHFR?” continues to see Rico and Brady finding their collaborative sweet spot all while disregarding genre barriers. Rico is as fearless and unapologetic as ever as she rap-growls, “I been movin’ how I want/ Fuck how you feel.” Brady’s booming production here is a departure from 100 gecs’ adrenaline-crazed hyper-pop, but fits right in with Rico’s calculated confidence. On Saturday, November 7th, Donald Trump announced a press conference at the Four Seasons Hotel in Philadelphia. Soon afterwards, his campaign offered the correction that, actually, Rudy Giuliani would be speaking to reporters from the parking lot of Four Seasons Total Landscaping, between a crematorium and Fantasy Island Adult Bookstore. Now, like a bard of old, Tim Heidecker has written a new ballad worthy of our current crop of leaders, and he’s titled it “Rudy at the 4 Seasons”. Heidecker shared the tune last night on Twitter. Like any good dramatist, he begins by sketching out the scene. “Standing out in front of a pile of manure,” he sings, “Spitting out lies that belong in the sewer.” His Giuliani imagines himself at a posh ballroom, eating crudités instead of supplying crudity. ...
