Last month, CHVRCHES released their latest single, “How Not to Drown” featuring Robert Smith, and now they’ve shared a special new version of the track remixed by The Cure frontman himself. The remix draws the single out, transforming singer Lauren Mayberry’s vocals into an echoing, atmospheric refrain before Smith once again takes over for the second verse. “I’m writing a chapter on what to do after they dig you up/ On what to do after you grew to hate what you used to love/ That was the first time I knew/ They were out for blood/ And they would have your guts,” he sings before harmonizing over Mayberry on the chorus. In an all-caps statement, Smith said he wanted this remix to “FOCUS ON SOME OF THE SUNKEN ELEMENTS IN THE BRILLIANT ALBUM MIX, TO CONJURE UP AN IRRESISTIBLE MIDNIGHT SEA, WI...
Foo Fighters have released a brand new version of their latest single “Making A Fire”, reimagined by Mark Ronson. On the remix, the superproducer enlists members of numerous bands — including Antibalas, the Budos Band, the Dap-Kings, El Michels Affair, La Buya, Menahan Street Band, the Tedeschi Trucks Band, and Tuatara to provide instrumentation for frontman Dave Grohl’s wailing vocal performance. “Are you afraid of the dark?/ I know a place we can start/ But if this is our last time/ Make up your mind/ I’ve waited a lifetime to live/ It’s time to ignite/ I’m making a fire,” he intones over backing vocals by a quartet that includes his 15-year-old daughter Violet Grohl. Watch the accompanying animated music video below. The track is the latest in a string of remixes that the Canadian Grammy boycotter has released since After Hours arrived last March. It follows he and Rosalía’s “Blinding Lights” remix from back in December, which was preceded by a Kenny G-featuring rendition of “In Your Eyes”, and a handful of remixes by Chromatics, Oneohtrix Point Never, and Lil Uzi Vert earlier in the year. It’s the first material The Weeknd has released since he reissued his debut mixtape Ho...
In 2020, after a 30 year hiatus, Spaceman 3 co-founder Peter Kember revived his Sonic Boom moniker to share the album All Things Being Equal. Now he’s diving back into that world, announcing a new LP of ATBE remixes called Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough. To herald the April 23rd release date, Kember has shared the lead single, “On A Summer’s Day (Remix)”. Almost Nothing Is Nearly Enough contains six reworked ATBE tracks, alongside two songs that had previously only been released in Japan: the title track and “Tick Tock”. According to a press release, Kember was inspired by Kraftwerk, Moroder, Blondie, and Eddy Grant to craft a sound both hypnotic and moody. Lyrically, he’s driven by age-old concerns about man’s inhumanity to our fellow man and the effects of techn...
Linkin Park’s mega-selling debut album Hybrid Theory continues to be celebrated after marking its 20th anniversary in October. A new officially sanctioned remix of “One Step Closer” by the innovative hyper-pop duo 100 gecs is the latest musical tribute to Linkin Park and their landmark LP. 100 gecs were personally recruited by Linkin Park to remix “One Step Closer” in any way they saw fit. The duo of Dylan Brady and Laura Les not only offer a new spin on Linkin Park’s breakout hit, but also add their own vocals to the mix, dubbed “One Step Closer (100 gecs Reanimation)”. Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda referenced his band’s 2002 remix album, Reanimation, when praising the 100 gecs version of “One Step Closer” in a press release. “Part of the spirit of Reanimation was to take the&...
Kacey Musgraves (Jimmy Kimmel Live!), Troye Sivan (photo by Tim Ashton), and Mark Ronson Troye Sivan has called upon Kacey Musgraves and Mark Ronson for a new remix of his summer single “Easy”. The track originally appeared on the In a Dream EP. Sivan teased the collaboration last month, saying he “maybeeeeeee” had worked with “two of my fave artists of all time.” The lush reimagining has arrived, now a few beats per minute slower and with new, gorgeous instrumentation courtesy of super-producer Ronson. “Easy” comes with an epic music video that shows off Sivan’s new mullet. It features long car rides with Musgraves driving and Sivan riding shotgun, and you can check it out below. Editors’ Picks Musgraves and Sivan first worked together on “Glittery” from The Kacey Musgraves Chr...
Rap royalty Run the Jewels have linked up with the rockers of Royal Blood for the new remix “The Ground Below (Royal Jewels Mix)”. “The Ground Below” is the ninth track on RTJ4, and it was already built around crunchy guitars that came courtesy of Gang of Four’s “Ether”. But the original mix kept the strings in the background, the better to accent those thumping drums. Now, the “Royal Jewels Mix” flips that script, easing off the percussion and placing a more muscular guitar front-and-center. RB vocalist Mike Kerr sings the refrain “Your love never meant much to me!” and provides some heavenly “Oohs!” Check out “The Ground Below (Royal Jewels Mix)” below. RTJ4 is one of our favorite albums of 2020, and the Jewels aren’t resting on their laurels. Last month, Killer Mike and...

J Balvin (photo by Heather Kaplan), 24kGoldn, and Justin Bieber (images via Instagram) No sooner had 24kGoldn’s “Mood” summited the Billboard Hot 100 then did Ariana Grande’s “Positions” knock it back down. But in the year of our Lord 1 ALN (that’s After Lil Nas X) we know there’s nothing like a starry remix to buoy flagging sales. In the spirit of the many incarnations of “Old Town Road”, 19-year-old 24kGoldn has shared “Mood (Remix)” featuring two of the biggest superstars in the Americas, Justin Bieber and J Balvin. In its original form, “Mood” featured Puerto Rican singer iann dior. His voice is a littler higher than 24kGoldn, but they have similar tones, and on a first listen only a fan familiar with their music would be able to tell them apart. That’s no longer a problem with Bieber ...
Felicia Douglass of Dirty Projectors (photo by Jason Frank Rothenberg) and Chromeo (photo by Heather Kaplan) In May, the Dirty Projectors released the perfectly effervescent new single “Lose Your Love”, fronted by keyboardist and percussionist Felicia Douglass. That little slice of heaven has already attracted one remix from Jimmy “The Senator” Douglass, a Grammy-winning producer who also happens to be Felicia’s father. Now, electro-funk duo Chromeo have dropped remix number two, giving the track their own disco-ball spin. The original “Lose Your Love” used warm synths and whimsical, chipmunk-soul samples to put some bounce in your step. In contrast, the Chromeo remix finds a harder, sweatier approach, the better for dancing all night. In Club Chromeo, the strutting bass line holds the flo...
Doja Cat has learned the power of the remix, especially after “Say So” featuring Nicki Minaj became each woman’s first number one hit. Now she’s teamed up with Canadian megastar The Weeknd, pouncing on a new remix of his After Hours track “In Your Eyes”. She feels right at home in The Weeknd’s tripped-out pop landscape, where the melodies are intoxicating and the artists have been over-served. She begins her verse in tears over her love, even though the rest of the lyrics imply that the relationship is going well. “I can’t stop staring at you” she sings, before spitting raps. “It’s like I forgot that staring is rude/ And that’s what five shots could turn me into.” Check out “In Your Eyes (Remix)” below. In March, The Weeknd shared a deluxe edition of After Hours featuring re...
