Kamaiyah kicked off 2020 with Got It Made, her first project in over three years. Fans thankfully won’t have to nearly wait as long for a follow-up, as the rapper has just dropped off a new mixtape. Titled Oakland Nights, it’s a collaborative effort with fellow Bay Area local Capolow. Spanning 10 tracks, today’s collection finds the two artists proudly repping their favorite coast. Not unlike Kamaiyah’s past releases, Oakland Nights is peppered with bits of West Coast funk flavor, such as on opener “Finer Things” and closing track “So Much Money”. Other songs, meanwhile, are more geared toward the R&B/rap-singer in Kamaiyah and Capolow, including the suave “Digits” and “Undercover”. As Stereogum points out, the release might just be a reference to Kamaiyah’s debut mixtape, A Good ...
The Flaming Lips have released their new album, American Head. Stream it below via Apple Music and Spotify. The effort is the 21st (!) record from the Oklahoma psych-rock heroes, following their 2019 album King’s Mouth and their collaborative album with Deap Valley from earlier this year. As its title implies, American Head is the Lips’ embracing their identity as an American band. When they announced the album back in June, frontman Wayne Coyne published a short essay about how they always considered their homebase to be “Earth”, but that they wanted to see what would happen when they consciously channeled so-called traditional American rock ‘n’ roll. All of the album’s many singles — “Dinosaurs On The Mountain”, “My Religion Is You”, “You n Me Sellin’ Weed”, “Mother P...
YoungBoy Never Broke Again, aka NBA YoungBoy, has unveiled his new album TOP. Stream it below via Apple Music and Spotify. This new project is technically the Baton Rouge rapper’s second proper full-length album after 2018’s Until Death Call My Name, however, it follows a very long list of EPs, mixtapes, and collaborative projects. In fact, it’s YoungBoy’s third release in 2020 alone, coming just months after the ‘tapes Still Flexin, Still Steppin and 38 Baby 2, shared in February and April, respectively. In keeping with this prolific nature, the 20-year-old has teased TOP with six singles: “Callin” feat. Snoop Dogg, “House Arrest Tingz”, “Sticks With Me”, “All In”, “Kacey Talk”, “Murder Business”, and most recently “Soul Stealer”. The album also promises a collaboration with Lil...
PJ Harvey is continuing her year-long archival campaign today with a new album consisting of demos from To Bring You My Love. Stream it in full below via Apple Music or Spotify. This demos collection, which comes paired with a proper reissue of the original 1995 LP, features early recordings of singles “Down By the Water”, “C’mon Billy”, “Send His Love to Me”. There are also raw takes on “Working for the Man”, “Long Snake Moan”, and “I Think I’m a Mother”. Audio was mastered by Jason Mitchell at Loud Mastering under the guidance of Harvey’s longtime associate John Parish. If that name sounds familiar, Parish actually co-produced the acclaimed official version of To Bring You My Love alongside Harvey and Flood — marking the trio’s first of many collaborations. Editors’ Picks Harv...

Tekashi 6ix9ine has released his new album TattleTales. Stream it below via Apple Music and Spotify. This studio effort follows his 2018 debut Dummy Boy, which charted at No. 2 on the Billboard 200. TattleTales features his No. 1 single “TROLLZ”, as well as other singles “GOOBA”, “YAYA”, and “PUNANI”. Notably, it’s the first album 6ix9ine has dropped since his early release from prison back in April. Everything about this record, and his career for that matter, is a radical shift in the way rappers earn credibility. Back in 2019, the rainbow-haired MC born Daniel Hernandez pleaded guilty to racketeering, firearm possession, and drug trafficking charges that stemmed from his involvement with the Nine Trey Gangsta Bloods. In a bewildering contradiction to the age-old street code of...

Angel Olsen has released her new album Whole New Mess. Stream it below via Apple Music and Spotify. Today’s release follows last year’s stunning All Mirrors, which was one of the best records of 2019 and the 2010s overall. However, whereas that effort was an opulent extravaganza of 11-piece string arrangements and orchestral ambiance, Whole New Mess is a decidedly quieter and more intimate affair. It mostly features early, acoustic renditions of songs off All Mirrors, but also offers some new material like the beautiful title track. It’s technically the first true solo album Olsen’s made since her 2012 debut Half Way Home, but she sounds comfortable as ever in this raw and emotive musical environment. In a revealing interview with Pitchfork, Olsen opened up about how the aforemen...
It’s been over a year since we last received a proper album from indie rockers The National. But it’s not as though the band’s members haven’t kept busy. Both brothers Aaron and Bryce Dessner recently worked on Taylor Swift’s new folklore LP, while frontman Matt Berninger is gearing up to drop his first-ever solo record this fall. Now, drummer Bryan Devendorf is joining in on the fun, as he’s just surprise-released his debut solo album, Royal Green. Per a statement from the percussionist, this new effort was co-produced in Brooklyn with Nate Martinez. National bandmate Aaron Dessner contributed to the record, as did frequent National producer and arranger Josh Kaufman. Royal Green also looks to be Devendorf’s official solo moniker, as that’s the artist name credited across all streaming pl...

Out via Secretly Canadian, the 10-track collection finds Whitney tackling originals by David Byrne and Brian Eno (“Strange Overtones”), Kelela (“Bank Head”), and Damien Jurado (“A.M. A.M.”). The album also includes the group’s rendition SWV’s “Rain” and a collaboration with Waxahatchee on the John Denver classic “Take Me Home, Country Roads”. In a statement about their choice in covers, drummer and singer Julien Ehrlich explained, “This could’ve been as simple as saying we really love these songs and we love our bandmates and making a covers record just felt right, but it truly became an exploration into how we can evolve as a band going for...
