Neil Young to Release Lost Crazy Horse Record ‘Toast’

More than two decades after it was originally recorded, Neil Young reveals the full details of a Crazy Horse-era album called Toast. The album, Young explained in a lengthy statement below, was “too sad” to put out at the time. It’s an album about a relationship, he said. And the music (“murky and dark”) matches the emotional toll it took on him. Young said that he decided to shelve the album and move on to the next one. The full Toast album will be released on July 8, 2022. But the first official recording from the record, a gritty rocker called “Standing in the Light of Love,” was released on May 26. Check it out below. The prolific musician has been opening the vault more frequently these days. In June 2020, Young released Homegrown — his 40th album — which contained music that was...

Every Neil Young Album, Ranked

Neil Percival Young grew up in Winnipeg, but he moved to America in the ‘60s to become the greatest rock star Canada has ever produced. For over 50 years, he’s remained restlessly creative and committed to his political ideals, an influential guitarist as adept at heartbreaking ballads as fiery protest songs. While other classic rockers have slowed down their output, Young has remained ever-prolific, releasing nine albums in just the last decade.  Neil Young’s latest album, Barn, with longtime backing band Crazy Horse, was released in December. But in recent weeks he’s been in the news more for taking a stand against Spotify, removing his music from the streaming service over its backing of controversial podcaster Joe Rogan. Fortunately, there are still a lot of ways to enjoy the song...

The 90 Greatest Albums of the ’90s

This article originally appeared in the September 1999 issue of SPIN. “You must be high.” We heard that a lot during the time we spent preparing this issue. Which is understandable. Pronouncing the 90 greatest albums of the ’90s is a somewhat presumptuous thing to do. When you’re measuring the music this decade is offering to history—the sounds we partied with, copulated to, fought about, and wept over—everyone has an opinion. That ours should be more valid than yours is debatable. But hey—it’s our magazine. What, then, you ask, constitutes “greatest”? Don’t even start. Suffice it to say that, after much heated discussion and countless veiled insults, it came down to the factors of both remarkable artistry and cultural shock value. Sometimes a record’s knock-you-off-your-Skechers impa...

Neil Young Shares Unreleased Version of ‘Powderfinger’

Neil Young continues to drop the sonic gems. This time, he offered up a previously unreleased version of “Powderfinger” off his 1979 album Rust Never Sleeps. While it was released in the late 70s, this version was actually recorded on June 12, 1975, in Point Dume, Calif. It was produced by Young and David Briggs and featured Frank “Poncho” Sampedro on guitar, Billy Talbot on bass and Ralph Molina on drums. Young has spent a lot of 2020 not only releasing unheard tracks, but he’s also been taking on Trump and tech companies and playing a series of livestream shows. Subscribers to the Neil Young Archives can listen to the entire track here or on the site’s mobile app. Or you can hear it below. The song is one of Young’s most popular and revered; It has been covered by Ban...
