For millions around the world, 2020 was a year to forget. Good news: Christmas is not cancelled. On Wednesday night (Dec. 2), tradition kicked in as the biggest pop stars in the country gathered round as the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree was lit up in Manhattan. On a chilly night, Dolly Parton, Brett Eldredge, Gwen Stefani, Tori Kelly, Pentatonix and other A-listers kept viewers warm and toasty. You just know it’s a heavyweight battle when the opposing coaches are up and dancing. That happened Monday night (Nov. 23), when Team Gwen’s Carter Rubin and Chloé Hogan went toe-to-toe for a dynamite knockout on NBC’s The Voice. Rubin, the cherubic teen from Shoreham, went first with a performance of Lauren Daigle’s “You Say.” It was a home run, with high notes aplenty. Gwen Stefani was clearly moved, and the mics caught her yelling, “my baby!” {“nid”:”9485886″,”type”:”post”,”title”:”Tamara Jade Takes ‘Higher Ground’ With ‘Ridiculous’ Knockout Performance on ‘The Voice’: Watch”,”relative_path”:”/articles/news/9485886/tamara-jade-knockout-perfo...
One of the stranger modern-day quirks of Saturday Night Live is how the show still draws some of its talent from the stand-up scene. This wasn’t necessarily the case for most of the aughts, but in the last few years, the late-night program has reverted to its ’90s strategy of throwing stand-up comedians in with all of the veteran improvisers and writers-turned-performers. Despite this tradition and its variety-show bona fides, Saturday Night Live isn’t especially built for stand-up. Instead, performers who want to flex those muscles traditionally have to head to Weekend Update, where Pete Davidson and Leslie Jones have found a stage in recent years. This season, though, a whopping four of the six hosts so far have been stand-up comedians, and their performances are subtly toying with the s...
“That was so good,” applauded Stefani. “I’m freaking out right now,” the 22-year-old hopeful admitted. The son of a former touring musician, Roy recounted how, in his younger days, he performed Legend’s “All of Me” at his high school talent show. With two superstars keen to coach him, Roy had a tough choice to make. He went with Gwen. Watch the performance on NBC below. You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. John Mulaney was a writer on Saturday Night Live for four seasons. It was a respectable, successful stint, but hardly era-defining. Plenty of SNL scribes have dug in for longer, more influential, runs behind the scenes, and unlike, say, Adam McKay, Tina Fey, or Colin Jost, Mulaney never served as head writer. He was the rare writer who made a handful of on-camera showcase appearances, but his Weekend Update commentaries didn’t garner much attention at the time. Among fans, he was better-known for co-creating Update mainstay character Stefon with beloved cast member Bill Hader. So how is it, exactly, that Mulaney, who makes his living primarily as a stand-up comic, has become not just a go-to SNL host but a reliable highlight for four seasons running? Mulaney’s hosting of this week’s Hallow...
Three coaches turned quick, with Kelly Clarkson the only holdout. She rued her decision. Clarkson later put her hand up and admitted it ought to have been a four-chair turn. “I heard power, I heard soul and clarity too,” John Legend later remarked. “I’m always jealous of a true tenor who can hit those high notes, it just sounded easy.” Gwen Stefani was shocked by what she heard. No, really. “It was shocking,” she recounted, “your voice was so strong and so confident. It sounded like a guy who has made records for ever.” In the end, Kingsley went with Coach Legend. When Saturday Night Live has a genuine stand-up comedian as a host, it can shift the whole structure of the show, which is what happened last week, with Chris Rock, and this week, with less famous comedian Bill Burr. Combined with the season’s endless debate sketches, a longer stand-up-based monologue can reduce the amount of airtime available for actual sketches. Unlike Rock’s gig, the Burr-hosted episode seemed to take some of its cues from Burr’s stand-up material — and with so few sketches making it to air, it only takes a few with common ground to make an episode feel more thematically unified than usual. In his monologue, Burr poked fun at notions of wokeness and allyship, making his case that white women have hijacked national conversations about equality and that a longer, warmer g...
Streaming from NBCUniversal’s Peacock, it’s Saturday Night Live! All 45 seasons of the sketch comedy series are coming to the streaming service on October 1st, marking the first time the full library has been available in one place in years. When Peacock launched over the summer, only the most recent five seasons were included alongside some “Best of” collections. Hulu, meanwhile, has continued to host Seasons 1-5 and 30-45, but episodes from 1981 to 2004 have been nowhere to be found. In fact, the last place the full SNL library could be seen was on NBCU’s comedy app Seeso, which only survived for about a year and a half between 2016 and 2017. Netflix and Hulu both held the complete catalog in the early 2010s, while a later deal put it on Yahoo for a brief period. The short-lived SNL...
NBC’s beloved institution Saturday Night Live was arguably at the top of its game during its last season, sweeping up 15 nominations at the 2020 Emmy Awards. It’s no wonder, then, that they’re not looking to shake anything up soon with Season 46. For the first time in over a decade, Saturday Night Live will kick off the next run with its entire cast returning. Season 46 will premiere on October 3rd via NBC and run through 2021. When it does, the roster will include no new members and SNL will film in its Rockefeller Center studio for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic shuttered production in March. The last time there was no cast turnover between seasons was in 2007, notes The Hollywood Reporter. It’s been a wild ride watching the SNL gang write, rehearse, and shoot new episodes...
The National Business and Technical Examinations Board, NABTEB, has said it will begin its NBC/NTC examinations from Sept. 21 to Oct. 15. The Registrar and Chief Executive of NABTEB, Prof. Ifeoma Isiugo-Abanihe, disclosed this in a statement in Abuja on Sunday. Isiugo-Abanihe said that the National Common Entrance Examination (NCEE) for JSS 3 Students’ admission to Technical Colleges had been brought forward from Oct. 3rd to Sept. 5th. ”While commending the Federal Ministry of Education and all state Ministries of Education and their stakeholders, for excellent planning and a smooth resumption of school and examinations for the exit classes, I wish to, on behalf of my Board NABTEB provide the following updates on our examinations”, she said. “A reminder that the NABTEB NBC/NTC examinations...
