Listen to the Unsettling Sounds Generated By a Black Hole, Captured By NASA

Despite appearances, there’s seemingly more to an intergalactic black hole than meets the eye. In fact, while most space objects and travelers are seen but never heard, black holes are proving to be an anomaly. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the sound a black hole produces is unsettling to say the least.  NASA took to Twitter to share that there’s some common misconceptions around the idea of sound’s lack of existence in space. The agency noted that generally speaking, there’s no means by which sound waves can travel as most of space exists as a vacuum. However, despite looking like an empty void, black holes are actually quite the opposite. In actuality, a black hole is composed of densely compacted space matter, so much so that there’s enough gas present for t...

NASA Scientists Hope to Send Nudes in Message to Aliens

Leave it to NASA to come up with a new way to send unsolicited nudes. In a recent study proposing a new type of message to beam to intelligent life forms, scientists shared a slide containing a naked photo of a man and a woman. Named A Beacon in the Galaxy, the message was laid out in a paper written by Jonathan Jiang, a scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and his colleagues. The team hopes to build on past attempts to connect with extraterrestrials through a message written in binary code that contains basic concepts in mathematics, chemistry, and biology. One of the slides is titled “Illustrations of the Human Form,” and it contains a pixelated man and woman standing next to each other with nary a piece of clothing in sight. On one side of the “depiction of human mal...

SpaceX launches its third astronaut crew, the first on a used Crew Dragon capsule

SpaceX launched its third crew of astronauts to the International Space Station early Friday morning, reusing a Crew Dragon space capsule to fly humans for the first time. The mission, dubbed Crew-2, is the latest flight under NASA’s Commercial Crew Program, and will add four more astronauts to the orbital space station. A used Falcon 9 rocket, last flown for SpaceX’s Crew-1 mission last year, lifted off at 5:49AM ET from Cape Canaveral, Florida carrying Endeavor, the same Crew Dragon capsule that first launched SpaceX’s debut astronaut mission nearly one year ago. For this flight, the Endeavor capsule carried four astronauts from three different countries — SpaceX’s most diverse NASA-managed crew yet. “Off the Earth, for the Earth, Endeavor is ready to go,” NASA astronaut Shane Kimbrough,...

Humanity’s First Hotel in Outer Space Will Have a Concert Venue

Because this is 2021 and no headline should shock you at this point, a company is building humanity’s first hotel in outer space. Plans for the structure, which is called Voyager Station, are said to include a concert venue. The company behind the interstellar project, Orbital Assembly, has gone public with their plans to begin construction on Voyager Station in low Earth orbit in 2025. They believe the astronomically ambitious hotel can be fully operational by 2027. Plans for Voyager Station, humanity’s first-ever hotel in outer space, are underway and the structure may be operational in 2027.  Voyager Station Vogayer Station’s website claims that the hotel will be the largest man-made structure in space after its completion, and t...

U.S. to de-link Ethiopian aid pause from dam policy

The U.S. State Department on Friday said Washington will de-link its pause on some aid to Ethiopia from its policy on the giant Blue Nile hydropower dam that sparked a long-running dispute between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan. U.S. State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters that President Joe Biden’s administration will review U.S. policy on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) and will assess the role the administration can play in facilitating a solution between the countries. A bitter dispute between Egypt, Ethiopia and Sudan over the filling and operation of the dam remains unresolved even after the reservoir behind the dam began filling in July. “We continue to support collaborative and constructive efforts by Ethiopia, Egypt and Sudan to reach an agreement on the GERD,” P...

10 Space-Themed EDM Tracks to Celebrate NASA’s Perseverance Rover Landing on Mars

Since we live in a social media hellscape age where content is force-fed down our throats whether we like it or not, odds are you saw NASA’s Perseverance rover landing on Mars today. Nicknamed Percy, the rover was launched back on July 30th, 2020 and finally landed on Mars’ Jezero Crater. After completing its staggering 293 million-mile journey through the depths of outer space, the rover landed safely on Mars at 12:56PM PT today. The rover, developed by NASA’s badass Jet Propulsion Laboratory team, will now kick off a two-year mission to search for life on Mars. To celebrate this incredible, transformative watershed moment in our nation’s space operations, we’ve highlighted 10 outer space-themed EDM tracks for your playlists. Check th...

Tom Cruise and Russia Are Engaged in an Actual Space Race

The movie that Tom Cruise is set to film in outer space somehow just got even more realistic. According to IndieWire, a Russian TV channel is aiming to shoot its own movie beyond our atmosphere before Cruise gets a chance to take off, creating a modern equivalent of the Cold War-era space race between America and the Soviet Union. Earlier this year, Cruise confirmed that he was teaming up with NASA and Elon Musk’s Space X program to star in a $200 million dollar film that will be partially shot on the International Space Station. The feat would make Cruise the first actor to ever film a Hollywood narrative feature in outer space. But between his prior obligations and the ongoing COVID pandemic, shooting for the still-untitled film isn’t supposed to begin until at least 2022, and Russia (cl...

Watch Louis Futon Make a Beat Using Sounds from NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory Telescope

Swooping in with a reminder that TikTok can be used for content other than cringe-worthy dance videos is Louis Futon, who took to the platform to share a spacey new beat created with sounds from NASA. After the prodigious multi-instrumentalist and electronic and jazz fusion producer discovered NASA’s official SoundCloud page, he immediately went to work. Using a galactic signification of NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observator, a space telescope launched in 1999, Futon produced a hypnotic electronic beat that could easily soundtrack the intro to a Netflix documentary about aliens. In his TikTok video, Futon pulls up the Ableton project file he used to produce the beat and deconstructs it for his fans. In addition to the telescope, he utilized sounds from an M16 X-ray and plasma wa...

Beck Teams Up with NASA for Visual Album Hyperspace: A.I. Exploration: Watch

Last November, Beck released his 14th studio album, the evocatively-named Hyperspace. Now the veteran songwriter has sought to visualize these songs as actual hyperspaces with help NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. The result is Hyperspace: A.I. Exploration, an out-of-this-world collaboration that combines music, data, video, and, of course, artificial intelligence. Source: Donaldson Collection / Getty NASA engineer and mathematician Mary W. Jackson is finally getting her just due. On Wednesday (Jun 24) NASA announced plans to rename their headquarters located in Washington DC after the first Black female aerospace engineer Mary W. Jackson. Jackson, who was the agency’s first American American female engineer in 1958, opened up opportunities for countless women of color in STEM who followed in her footsteps. “Mary W. Jackson was part of a group of very important women who helped NASA succeed in getting American astronauts into space. Mary never accepted the status quo, she helped break barriers and open opportunities for African Americans and women in the field of engineering and technology,” Administrator Jim Bridenstine said in a statement to CBS Ne...
