Black Activists Spar Over Proposed NYC Menthol Cigarette Ban

A ban on menthol cigarettes on the city and state level in New York has led to a conflict between activists in the Black community who are for and against the ban. A group against the proposals led by family members of Eric Garner & George Floyd held a protest at City Hall, and a group led by members of the NAACP and one of the City Council members supporting the ban was held a block away at One Police Plaza. NAACP Says Biden Student Loan Debt Relief Proposal Not Enough

According to reports, President Biden is poised to announce a new plan to forgive up to $10,000 of student loan debt for those borrowers who earn below a certain level of income and to extend the current pause on repayments until January 2023. Jason Isbell Donating Songwriting Royalties for Morgan Wallen’s “Cover Me Up” to NAACP

Despite being among the greatest songwriters of his generation, Jason Isbell has never had a song or album be certified Gold (500,000 units sold) or Platinum (1 million) by the RIAA, with one exception: his 2013 classic “Cover Me Up”, which went Platinum after Morgan Wallen covered it in 2019. Now, in the aftermath of Wallen getting caught on video using a racial slur, Isbell has vowed to donate all of his proceeds from “Cover Me Up” to the Nashville chapter of the NAACP. Beyoncé Pledges Another $1 Million to Black-Owned Businesses

Beyoncé has been one of the more charitable celebrities helping ease the burden of 2020 through her BeyGOOD foundation. In April, she sent $6 million to essential workers impacted by the coronavirus, then in May supplied 1,000 testing kits and PPE to her native Houston. June saw the beginning of her Black Parade initiative (and companion single) to promote Black-owned businesses, which she backed up by launching the Black-Owned Small Business Impact Fund in July with the NAACP Empowerment Programs. Now, the superstar has announced a second round of grants for the fund, bringing another $1 million to Black-owned businesses. Bandcamp to Donate Profits to NAACP Legal Defense Fund Every Juneteenth

Bandcamp has been a beacon of charity in these tough times. Having previously waived their fees for 24 hours to support independent musicians, the music website has announced they will donate 100% of their share in sales on June 19th to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund.
