Libya’s GNA says it is targeting retreating renegade strongman’s forces

Libya’s internationally recognised government has launched air strikes against forces loyal to renegade military commander Khalifa Haftar after his forces announced they were pulling back from Tripoli front lines. Air strikes by the Government of National Accord (GNA) targeted several locations in the west of the country, including in the Haftar stronghold of Tarhouna near the capital, Tripoli, according to GNA army spokesperson Colonel Mohamed Qanunu. In Tarhouna, two military vehicles and a vehicle carrying ammunition that belonged to Haftar’s Libyan National Army (LNA) were destroyed, the spokesperson said. DR Congo police shoot dead activist during rally

Agence France-Presse An activist was shot and killed by police on Thursday during a rally in a strife-torn region of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo, a campaign group has said. Police in the city of Beni, in a region plagued by attacks from bandits and militias, told AFP that two officers had been arrested over the incident. Roughly 20 people had gathered in a stadium in Beni for a protest organised by grassroots group Lucha against killings and general insecurity in the area. The Allied Democratic Forces (ADF), a mainly Muslim rebel group, is accused of killing more than 1,000 civilians in the Beni region since October 2014. Imam admonishes Muslims against idolatry

The Chief Imam of Fulani Mosque in Ilorin, Kwara, Dr Muhammad Bashir-Saliu, has warned Muslims against idolatry acts against Allah. Bashir-Saliu during a Ramadan Tafsir in Ilorin, said all acts of worship should be for Allah (God) alone. The cleric said Allah hated any act of ascribing partners with him, adding that he forgave all sins but not acts of idolatry. He noted that if Muslims strictly adhered to the warnings, then Allah would take care of all their affairs in the world and the hereafter. Court convicts 717 for lockdown violation in Kano

The Kano mobile courts have convicted 717 persons for violating the subsisting lockdown order in the state in the last 4 days. Kano has 11 mobile courts that were inaugurated by Kano Chief Judge, Justice Nura Sagir to sit in various parts of the state to enforce the lock down order recently. Baba Jibo Ibrahim, Spokesman, Kano State judiciary, told newsmen in Kano that from Sunday 3 May to Wednesday 6 May 2020, the 717 offenders were arraigned and convicted for violating the lock order, disclosing that there were those sentenced to rendering community services, payment od fines and those who received strokes of cane as punishment.
