On Thursday, Perfume Genius delivered a #PlayAtHome performance of “Whole Life” on The Late Show. Despite not actually broadcasting from a proper TV studio, the artist born Michael Hadreas still held viewers captive, thanks to some dramatic lighting and his magnetic body language. The whole thing was shot in a dimly lit room in Los Angeles with longtime collaborator Alan Wyffels. Hadreas can be seen performing in front of a projection screen rolling footage of collapsing water towers. Between that imagery, the song itself, and Hadreas’ body and shadow dancing in tandem with one another against the screen, it all felt somewhat poetic. You could almost say that the emotive potency of Perfume Genius is so powerful it transcends quarantine borders. Watch it for yourself below, and then revisit...
The Rolling Stones (photo by Heather Kaplan), Donald Trump, and Village People (photo by Heather Kaplan) Donald Trump is running out of songs for his rallies. The White House’s current occupant continues to be sued by artists who don’t want him using their music, including The Rolling Stones, which has apparently left him with no option but to replace “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” with “Y.M.C.A.” as his walk-off song — even though Village People asked him to stop playing that exact song. “Now that I have seen it a few times at various events, clearly The Village People’s ‘YMCA’ is now the walk-off song for the president replacing the Rolling Stones’ ‘You can’t always get what you want,’” tweeted Kelly O’Donnell, the White House Correspondent for NBC News. The Rolling Stones ha...
Surprise! Maluma‘s got a brand-new album, and at 22 tracks long, it’s an all-you-can-hear buffet, courtesy of Papi Juancho. The new LP takes its title from Maluma’s Colombian nickname, a figure that also serves as his alter ego. And musically, Papi Juancho runs the gamut from silken Latin trap&B to bustling reggaeton and chiming escapist jaunts to Hawaii, Madrid, and more. Papi Juancho‘s long journey features plenty of guests along for the ride, leaning heavy on artists that have inspired him throughout his career. The list includes Zion, Randy, Yandel, Lenny Tavarez, Justin Quiles, Myke Towers, Ñengo Flow, Jory Boy, Ñejo & Dálmata, and Darell. But this is still Maluma’s show, and his charismatic croon carries carries breezy cuts like “PerdónR...
Say what you want about Jordin Sparks’s bouncy new single “Red Sangria,” but she made some points when she said, “I’m still on your playlist / You can’t breathe with no air / Yeah, you been suffocated.” Sparks may shout out her 2008 hit “No Air,” but the American Idol days are more than 13 years behind her, and her first solo release in five years is teeming with confidence and fun. “Red Sangria” is as delicious as its boozy namesake, with choral shout-backs and verses mixed with a shot of self-love. The video, which features Grown-ish’s Francia Raisa, is a kick-back dance-party that matches the song in saccharine celebration. —Carson Mlnarik You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. After releasing a string of EPs, including this year’s Miracle, Nashville songwriter Briston Maroney is ready to drop his full-length debut album. The effort is slated for arrival sometime in 2021 ,and as a preview, he’s sharing a new single called “Deep Sea Diver”. A freewheeling and folksy number, it finds Maroney struggling to pull himself out of a major rut. “Sick and tired of this old routine,” he laments early on, adding, “I’m a deep sea diver, I’m in too deep.” Maroney goes on to ponder his own “selfish pride” and “fear of rejection”, and whether they are keeping him from being an authentic and honest person. He also considers taking drugs to escape the present, but only momentarily. (Maroney might just be a genius for rhyming “Bowling Green”, “ketamine”, and “next week” all in one ...
Taylor Swift has surprised independent record stores around the country with signed copies of her new album folklore. Many shops reported unexpectedly receiving a package of 30 autographed CDs, and have been posting pictures with the hashtag #recordstorefolklore. folklore is a self-consciously “indie” effort, created with The National’s Aaron Dessner and featuring Bon Iver. It’s also the top-selling record of the year, released by one of the most famous people on the planet. With this gesture — hand-signing hundreds of CDs and shipping them all around the states — Swift may have given herself arthritis, but she’s also given these record stores her time and the power of her colossal celebrity. It worked — several stores reported selling out the whole stock of CDs in less than an h...
Global pop sensation Twice has come a long way since they emerged on the Korean reality audition program, Sixteen. Their 2019 world tour included sold-out shows in Los Angeles and Newark, the emotional experience captured in the YouTube Originals documentary series, Twice: Seize the Light. Since the nine-member girl group debuted in 2015, their trajectory has seemed unstoppable, and their mini-album, “More & More” brought a light to fans, lovingly known as Once, when it released earlier this year amidst the coronavirus pandemic. And on Friday (August 21), the group ascended further with an English remake of the collection’s title track, “More & More.” The energetic song is premised on a clapping beat, as the girls sin...
