Cat Power announced today that she’s heading out on tour early next year. Additionally, she’s shared her new rendition of “Pa Pa Power” by Dead Man’s Bones from her upcoming album, Covers. The singer-songwriter reimagines the 2009 track by Ryan Gosling and Zach Shields into a haunting, melancholy dirge, replacing the children’s choir and plinking synths of the original with her own backing vocals and dreamy electric guitar. “Burn the streets, burn the cars/ Power/ Broken glass, but what about/ Our broken hearts/ Please make me better/ Please make me powerful,” she sings into dual mics in the accompanying music video, tweaking the song’s lyrics ever so slightly in the process. Not that she needs your approval, but Flo Milli continues to make promising arguments that she’s one of the most exciting young names in hip-hop. Today, the Alabama rapper returns with “Ice Baby,” a searing banger that’s sure to make you feel like a million bucks. Along with the track comes a brief accompanying clip called “I Love Flo Milli.” As is the case with most Flo Milli tracks — like her viral TikTok anthem “Beef FloMix” — “Ice Baby” is backed by a rattling bass, courtesy of producers Brad!, brettonthebeat, and Slade. After recently debuting the track in her COLORS Studio performance, her playful flow takes the forefront, and there’s plenty of fun bars to go around, too: “Money my mood, make a million a month/ This easy like Evel Knievel to stunt,” she spits. The video sta...
SASAMI has announced her new album, Squeeze, due out February 25th via Domino. As a preview, she has also shared a pair of lead singles: “The Greatest” and “Skin a Rat.” Spanning 11 tracks, Squeeze is partially inspired by the Japanese yōkai folk spirit called Nure-onna (translation: wet woman), a vampiric deity that has the head of a woman and the body of a snake. The album’s eclectic sound varies between nu metal, country pop, folk rock, and classical music while drawing inspiration from artists ranging from System of a Down to Sheryl Crow and Fleetwood Mac to Bach and Mahler. Intended to help listeners process their “anger, frustration, desperation, and more violent, aggressive emotions,” Squeeze was constructed as an opera or orchestral work containing different “movements” that m...
Aminé is back with “Charmander,” his first new music of 2021. To accompany the single, the rapper released a music video that he co-directed with frequent collaborator Jack Begert. Produced by Lido (Halsey, Chance the Rapper) and Aksel Arvid, “Charmander” sees the Portland MC explaining his chosen life of solitude. “Look, my energy is priceless, told my jeweller, ‘Ice this’/I’m way too decisive, don’t catch that ego-itis,” he raps over a chirpy beat featuring a sped-up vocal sample. “People be so phony, that’s why I be on my lonely.” In the video for “Charmander,” Aminé leads a simple life with his partner in a cabin located in the Oregon wilderness. The couple is also joined by a gigantic dog who pisses off their next-door neighbor. Watch the full clip below. Advertisement Related Vi...
U.S. Girls have unveiled their new single, “Good Kinda High,” and it features the unlikeliest of collaborators: classical pianist Glenn Gould. “This is that good kinda high/ That kind you cannot buy/ There are some things that you cannot buy/ This is that good kind of high/ That kind you cannot buy/ Only some things that you cannot buy,” intones Meg Remy — the brainchild of U.S. Girls — repeatedly over a piano line by the late classical artist, who passed away nearly 40 years ago in 1982. The track is included on the compilation album Uninvited Guests, on which producer Billy Wild melds samples of the late Gould’s work with the music of modern artists like U.S. Girls. (The album is out today via Primary Wave Music and Sony Masterworks.) Advertisement Related Video “This started seven years...
Alex Lahey returns today with “Spike the Punch,” her first proper solo single of 2021. Self-produced alongside John Castle and mixed by Grammy winner Carlos de la Garza, the power-pop tune arrives with a stunning accompanying music video. Like taking a gulp of jungle juice in the wee morning hours at a house party, “Spike the Punch” feels like an inhibition-free sugar rush. Its lyrics reckon with the euphoria of ditching your morals, while the threat of real consequences always linger in the shadows: “I got my ass kicked, it was fantastic /Kept going back like a hopeless romantic,” Lahey sings in the track’s opening lines before an explosive chorus. “‘Spike the Punch’ is a song about the fun that comes with self-sabotage and reckless abandon,” Lahey wrote in a statement. “It’s big, it’s lo...
Andrew Bird and Lucius were among a slew of high-profile acts who contributed to the recently released track-by-track covers album I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to The Velvet Underground & Nico, and now they have shared an intimate live recording of their take on “Venus in Furs.” Of course, “Venus in Furs” wouldn’t be complete without John Cale’s iconic viola solo. It makes sense that Bird — who’s a bit of a violin legend in his own right — would put his own spin on the track, using loop pedals to fill out the live performance as he then plucks the four-stringed instrument like a banjo alongside Lucius’ flawless vocal harmonies. Though nobody could compete with Lou Reed and company, this is one cover that rivals its original. Check out their living room performance of “Venus In ...
Yeonjun and Taehyun of TOMORROW X TOGETHER have dropped their cover of “Stay” by Justin Bieber and The Kid LAROI. Stream it below. On their take, the K-pop idols hew fairly close to the spirit of the original track, bouncing vocal lines off one another and letting their falsetto loose on the song’s floating melody. “When I’m away from you, I miss your touch/ You’re the reason I believe in love,” they croon over slamming pop production. “It’s been difficult for me to trust/ And I’m afraid that I’mma fuck it up/ Ain’t no way that I can leave you stranded/ ‘Cause you ain’t ever left me empty-handed.” Advertisement The TOMORROW X TOGETHER members also released a performance video to coincide with the “Stay” cover, in which they play the reigning No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 from a mattre...
Several months after the hip-hop supergroup MOUNT WESTMORE was announced, Snoop Dogg, Ice Cube, Too $hort, and E-40 have finally released their debut single, “Big Subwoofer.” The track arrives from a compilation helmed by Snoop Dogg, who joined Def Jam as a label exec in June. Produced by Kato on the Track, “Big Subwoofer” features a booming beat befitting the West Coast legends that comprise MOUNT WESTMORE. E-40 and Snoop glide through effortless verses while Too $hort turns in some of his signature raunchy rhymes. Closing out the track is Ice Cube, who brings much-needed energy with lyrics like “It’s a new day, still got the AK/ If these bitches wanna take it back to ’88.” For the music video, the quartet travels in a poorly CGI’d spacecraft to Planet Snoopiter, where...
Anya Taylor-Joy is going “Downtown.” Today, the star unveiled her eerie take on the ’60s classic by Petula Clark in a new music video promoting the Edgar Wright-directed film Last Night in Soho. Watch it below. “When you’re alone and life is making you lonely, you can always go/ Downtown,” Taylor-Joy warbles on the downtempo track over a full string section as scenes from the time-shifting thriller play across the screen. “When you’ve got worries, all the noise and the hurry seems to help, I know/ Downtown/ Just listen to the music of the traffic in the city/ Linger on the sidewalks where the neon signs are pretty/ How can you lose?” In the upcoming psychological horror flick, the Emmy nominee portrays Sandie, an aspiring singer in 1960s London whom modern-day fashion student Eloise (Thoma...
