Tomorrowland 2021 Green-Lit By Belgian Government—But Questions Still Remain

The Belgian government has made a pivotal decision to green-light festivals of up to 75,000 attendees. The new provision goes into effect on the August 13th, effectively allowing Tomorrowland to move forward with their originally planned dates over two weekends: August 27-29 and September 3-5, respectively. As IQ notes, the motion also paves the way for Pukkelpop and the Formula 1 Grand Prix race, among other events scheduled to take place this year. “We are very happy to receive this news, but we will wait for the conditions and rules before we will communicate about the organization of the festival,” a Tomorrowland spokesperson said. “We are very positive, and we look forward to organizing a festival at the end of August.” The mainstage at Tomorrowland 2...

Did Elon Musk Just Back a Dogecoin Music Festival?

With three simple words, Elon Musk lit a fuse in the crypto community that could eventually lead to a Dogecoin-themed music festival: “Sounds kinda fun.” The comment came in response to a popular Dogecoin fan account who tweeted about the fictitious DogeFest, using a photo of a music festival stage edited with the token’s viral Shiba Inu meme imagery. He then started a thread to suggest what the festival would entail if it were real, such as a DJ set from Musk himself, who has long championed EDM and recently teased the sale of an NFT techno song. The page also suggested that DogeFest would require Dogecoin “as payment for everything.” Once Musk chimed in, legions of crypto supporters joined the conversation to conceptualize the fest. One said that t...

Coachella Announces 2022 Festival Dates

The announcement arrives after a tumultuous period for the iconic Indio music and arts festival, whose organizers were forced to cancel outright for the first time in 20 years back in June 2020. The famed electronic duo took time during their Sunset performance to formally announce Starbase, a curated melodic bass music festival they had first teased in summer 2020. According to an attendee, whose initial tweet has been circulated widely on social media since SLANDER’s set, the fest will go down in October 2021 in Charleston, South Carolina. SLANDER revealed the event back in June 2020, when the duo announced that they were planning an outer space-themed ...

UK Festival Season Facing ‘Make Or Break Moment’

“The vast majority of music festivals do not have the financial resilience to cover the costs of another year of late-notice cancellations,” said committee chair Julian Knight in announcing the inquiry’s findings. “If the commercial insurance market won’t step in, Ministers must, and urgently.” Similar government-backed insurance schemes exist in the Netherlands, Belgium, Austria and Denmark, and, after months of delays, were recently finalized in Germany. They provide a much-needed safety net for promoters committing non-recoupable upfront costs for future events amid the uncertainty of a pandemic. The committee’s inquiry into the future of U.K. music festivals began on Nov. 6, with Massive Attack’s Robert Del Naja, Paul Reed, chief executive at the Association of Independent Festivals, a...

An Urgent Call for Harm Reduction in EDM: How to Keep You and the Rave Alive Post-Pandemic

“Nightlife always survives.” “It survived the great depression, and it survived the AIDs pandemic in the 80s,” Joseph J. Palamar, Associate Professor in the Department of Population Health at New York University Langone Medical Center, tells EDM.com. “Nightlife will always come back.” The terms of the world opening up after more than a year of isolation, loneliness, and tragedy are uncertain. But there’s something we know for sure: we love to dance with our friends. And for the first time in more than a year, that feels like a genuine—and imminent—possibility. As we write this piece, 39% of the U.S. population is fully vaccinated against COVID-19. It feels a bit easier every day to imagine that someday soon some of us will once again be sa...
