Producers of 2022 VMAs on Why They Think the Ratings Ticked Up This Year: ‘All the Stars Aligned’

In an era when ratings are drifting downward on most award shows, viewership of the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards was actually up compared to last year, whether measuring by traditional TV ratings or cross-platform consumption. According to final Nielsen figures, the awards, a pre-show and two on-air replays averaged 3.9 million viewers across 12 Paramount Global cable channels as well as broadcast network The CW. That’s up from 3.7 million for the 2021 awards and associated programming, a gain of 3% year-to-year. On Tuesday (Aug. 30), Billboard spoke with both of the show’s producers, Bruce Gillmer and Jesse Ign...

Nicki Minaj Parties With Taylor Swift After 2022 VMAs: ‘Barbs, I Know You Love Her’

Nicki Minaj had quite the night at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards, but her fun didn’t end with receiving this year’s Video Vanguard Award. The honoree took to Instagram on Monday (Aug. 29) to share a video from the Republic Records VMAs afterparty with none other than Taylor Swift. “The big winner of the night is the beautiful Taylor Swift. Barbs, I know you love her; we all love her,” she told the camera over booming music as she and the superstar cozied up together. Indeed, Swift walked away from the ceremony with her record-breaking third win for video of the year (for All Too Well: The Short Film) as well as Moon Persons for best longform video and best direction. Lizzo Geeks Out Over Meeting BLACKPINK’s Lisa & Jisoo at 2022 VMAs: ‘THEY ARE SO SWEET’

Lizzo took to social media on Monday (Aug. 29) to show off her run-in with one-half of BLACKPINK at the 2022 MTV Video Music Awards. In a TikTok, the Special singer approached Lisa and Jisoo for a cute video on behalf of a follower, who requested, “TAKE A SELFIE WITH BLACKPINK FOR ME!!!! PLEASE.” While fans can’t hear what the K-pop idols and Lizzo are saying to each other due to the latter’s new single “2 Be Loved (Am I Ready)” playing over top of the clip, the singer assured her followers, “THEY ARE SO SWEET” in the caption. Both Lizzo and BLACKPINK were among the performers to hit the stage during the awards show on Sunday night, with the former playing a medley of her No. 1 Billboard Hot 100 hit “About Damn Time” and “2 Be Loved” and the girl group making their U.S. awards show debut w...

VMAs 2022: See The Complete Winners List

The 2022 MTV Video Music Awards may be giving its crown jewel — the Video Vanguard Award — to queen Nicki Minaj. But as far as the nominations go, 2022 was a year for the kings. Leading the nominations with seven apiece are Lil Nas X, Jack Harlow, and Kendrick Lamar. Harry Styles tied with Doja Cat for six each. Beyond that, Drake, Ed Sheeran, the Weeknd, Justin Bieber, and even Elton John, appear in all the major categories. BTS is the most nominated group or duo with four nods. No women are nominated in the Best Rock Video category (Demi will change that next year) and it wasn’t much better for Best Alternative. Only two females are nominated — Willow and Avril Lavigne, each twice —with partial credit to Måneskin for their bassist Victoria De Angelis. In 2017, MTV announced its eliminat...

The 22 Best VMAs Performances of All Time: Critics’ Picks

The annual MTV Video Music Awards have been one of pop culture’s biggest nights for decades. Good, bad or ugly, the show has had more than its fair share of headline-making moments since its debut in 1984. Remember when Drake professed his love for Rihanna on stage in 2016? Or Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley’s awkwardly long kiss in 1994? Oh, and need we even mention Lady Gaga’s 2010 meat dress? Despite its anything-goes reputation, the ceremony has always been a celebration of the year in music. Musical acts across genres are recognized not just for their records and albums, but for the hard work and creativity they put into accompanying visual works. And although going home with a moon person trophy (most notably for video of the year) is surely a goal for nominees, for viewers, i...

Photos From the First MTV Video Music Awards & Afterparties in 1984

No one knew quite what to expect at the first MTV Video Music Awards, which was held at Radio City Music Hall in New York City on Sept. 14, 1984. The show seemed likely to have a younger, hipper vibe than the Grammy Awards or the American Music Awards. But no one could have predicted that Madonna would steal the show with a daring performance of “Like a Virgin” that would have broken the Internet if such a thing had existed back then. Dan Aykroyd and Bette Midler co-hosted the show. That may seem like an odd choice, but it made sense in the context of the times. Aykroyd appeared in Ghostbusters, which was the year’s top-grossing film. Midler’s 1983 album No Frills had emphasized her rock side, with its covers of songs by the likes of The Rolling Stones and Marshall Crenshaw. Cyndi Lauper h...
