What do Spider-Man’s parallel-universe battles, Ted Lasso’s mustache, and Lexi’s play on Euphoria all have in common? They’re all 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards nominees — and the celebration has just begun. On June 5, the MTV Movie & TV Awards and the Movie & TV Awards: UNSCRIPTED will both air live from Los Angeles in what MTV is calling a one-night-only global event. And today (May 11), the nominees for both shows have been revealed. Unsurprisingly, huge cultural touchstones like Spider-Man: No Way Home, Euphoria, and The Batman lead the pack with multiple nods. Meanwhile, UNSCRIPTED’s nomination list boasts RuPaul’s Drag Race, Selling Sunset, and Summer House all as frontrunners. The Movie & TV Awards also debut two new categories th...

The world premiere of the long-awaited film Top Gun: Maverick has finally arrived, and a red carpet was rolled out at the USS Midway aircraft carrier stationed in San Diego, California, on Wednesday (May 4) to toast the occasion. Cast members Miles Teller, Monica Barbaro, Jon Hamm, and other A-listers arrived dressed to impress, but it was the beloved franchise’s star, Tom Cruise, who made the most explosive entrance of all. MTV News correspondents Josh Horowitz, Dometi Pongo, and Simone Boyce hosted the premiere event, which was livestreamed on YouTube and made use of the streaming platform’s new Live Redirect feature to re-route audiences from 150 Paramount-affiliated channels. They greeted celebrities as they walked onto the ship while an American flag fluttered above the deck. Hamm rec...
There are multiple Nic Cages on display in the new meta action-comedy The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent: the financially struggling actor with a penchant for lavish purchases and hotel stays that would bankrupt the budget of Vermont; a less-than-attentive father who means well but is quickly losing the patience of his teenage daughter; and, above all, the artist devoted to his craft. Oh, and there’s also Nicky, the Vampire’s Kiss-era Cage who haunts the real Nic Cage, who is there to remind the thespian that he’s first and foremost a movie star. For Nicky, it’s less artsy, more fartsy. So, then, I wonder what Nicky, with his glued-on pompadour and leather jacket, would think of his flesh and blood counterpart’s newest (and welcomed return to) big screen joint? My guess is he would lo...
Eminem is for the children. Okay, not typically, but Marshall Mathers is all in when it comes to the upcoming Minions sequel. The Detroit don posted the trailer for Minions: The Rise of Gru on Wednesday (March 30), which is cued to his 2002 Oscar-winning underdog pump-up anthem “Lose Yourself.” Explore See latest videos, charts and news “One shot. One opportunity. Time to show the world who’s mini boss,” Em tweeted, along with a Minions emoji. As the song’s signature chugging rhythm bubbles up on the action set in the 1970s, we see 12-year-old Gru bragging that he’s going to be a “super-villain,” as he tosses a stink bomb into a movie theater causing a mass exodus. “This world is mine for the taking/ Make me king as we move toward a new world order,” Em memorably raps on the track as we se...
There are many questions to consider heading into the 94th Academy Awards, airing tonight (March 27), given the nominations. Will Kristen Stewart land her first Oscar after a much-praised turn as Princess Diana in period drama disguised as a horror film, Spencer? Will CODA‘s Troy Kotsur make history and become the first deaf male actor to pick up a trophy? Will Encanto make the same waves at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood as it’s made on the pop charts? Presumably, we will all know the answers soon. And we might also find out if The Power of the Dog nabs Best Picture, as it’s likewise cleaned up at the BAFTAs, Critics’ Choice Awards, and Golden Globes. We’ll also find out whether Beyoncé or Billie Eilish earns their first Oscar win. That’s a lot to...
Our carefully curated list of the best mountaineering movies ever made Recently, I re-watched one of my favourite mountaineering movies: Everest. Historically, even the best mountaineering films have struggled to bridge the gap between climbing documentary and Hollywood blockbuster. However, Everest – released in 2015 and starring Jake Gyllenhaal and Josh Brolin – managed to please both thrill-seeking moviegoers and mountaineers alike (unless you’re Jon Krakauer of course). I would rate the film right up there with the wince-inducing 127 Hours (2010) and North Face (2008), a chilling German film about a failed attempt on the Eiger. It made me want to re-watch the very best mountaineering movies, in particular, Meru (2015) and Touching the Void (2003), the latter of which also hap...
[Trigger warning: this article contains descriptions of domestic violence, as well as sexual and physical abuse.] Sometimes the film you set out to make is not the one you end up with. That’s the case with director Amy Berg’s intense two-part HBO documentary Phoenix Rising. The veteran filmmaker originally set out to document actress Evan Rachel Wood’s successful drive to lengthen the statute of limitations for domestic violence felonies in California from three to five years. As Wood was fighting for the Phoenix Act — which was signed into law in 2019 — Berg realized that any potential film would have to delve into Wood’s allegations against her former fiancé/boyfriend, shock rocker Marilyn Manson (born Brian Warner). That story makes up much of the first part (“Don’t Fall”) of the nearly...
This Friday, March 5, marks the 100th anniversary of the German silent horror film Nosferatu. An early example of German Expressionism, the film was directed by F.W. Murnau, who helmed other early cinematic masterpieces such as Sunrise (1927) and City Girl (1930), and starred Max Schreck as a Transylvanian vampire named Count Orlok. Orlok is looking for new digs, which brings estate agent Thomas Hutter (Gustav von Wangenheim) his way. Hutter has heard stories of the mysterious Orlok, mostly from locals who cower at the mere mention of the Count’s name. Paying no mind, Hutter makes his way to Orlok’s castle and is invited to stay for dinner. Hey, can’t beat a free meal! While dining, Hutter cuts his thumb with a steak knife and begins to bleed profusely. Like any good host, Orlok offers to ...
Cyrano de Bergerac is one of the most prominent romantic figures in literary history — but even he’d admit his nose was even bigger! The public first got a whiff of the exploits of the seductive swordsman in 1897, in a play that bears his name and has been retold on stage and screen scores of time ever since. Despite the historically famous loaf of French bread on his face (which can be picked up by satellite cameras to this day) Cyrano has remained the grooviest guy from Gaul with all the gals. We caught up with the smooth-talking swordsman to talk about Cyrano the ELEVENTH film – starring Peter Dinklage as Cyrano and Haley Bennett as Roxanne (in theaters Feb. 25) – celebrating his powers of persuasion with the ladies to see if he thinks it passes his smell test. SPIN: Thanks for tak...
