As a MTV Movie & TV Awards category, Breakthrough Performance tends to recognize the folks that made TV and film scenes their own, even as they weren’t necessarily the top-billed stars. And this year, no one was more ready to be recognized than English actress Sophia Di Martino for her portrayal of Loki‘s Sylvie, an alternate version of the title character whose anger fuels her as both a hilarious and fierce warrior. “This is actually really heavy!” she said about the Golden Popcorn as she took the podium for her acceptance speech, the latest in a long line of winners who’ve come to that realization upon being handed the coveted statue. After setting it down (wisely), she went into her own story of portraying Sylvie and the story around her casting. “...

What is love? It looks like Thor is about to find out. Marvel fans were treated to an exclusive new clip from Thor: Love & Thunder during the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday (June 5). The tantalizing teaser sees the titular hero (played by Chris Hemsworth) reach for his signature hammer, only for another hero — namely Jane Foster, a.k.a. Mighty Thor (Natalie Portman) — to grab it instead. The preview clip was prefaced by Kiwi filmmaker Taika Waititi, who co-wrote and developed the film as a more light-hearted, romantic comedy-esque addition to the franchise. “Love is in the air,” Waititi told viewers in his pre-recorded introduction. “And potentially the extinction of all gods? What?! I know.” Daniel Zuchnik/WireImage/Getty Images Intended to pick up where 2017’s Thor: Ragna...
Maybe you know him best from School of Rock or the Jumanji films or Nacho Libre or Orange County, or perhaps as or as the voice of a martial artist who is also a panda. Maybe anytime you see him without a guitar in his hands, you think he looks incomplete — because he’s also a rock god. Whatever your preferred role of Jack Black‘s is, one thing is clear: The man is a comedic genius. This fact was recognized, underscored, and shouted at tonight’s MTV Movie & TV Awards, where Black received the Comedic Genius Award. Because he is Jack Black, he walked onstage in a large (kung-fu) panda mask and immediately barrel-rolled his way to the mic, soaking up every last bit of audience glory. The entire moment was soundtracked by some completely correct walk-out music: Twisted S...
By Sam Manzella The recipient of this year’s Generation Award has us getting loud. Jennifer Lopez received the lifetime achievement honor at the 2022 MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday (June 5). Although she is best known for her killer dance moves and hit pop songs, J.Lo is a consummate multi-hyphenate and has acted in a number of iconic films and television shows over the years. Accepting the honor in real time at Barker Hangar in Santa Monica, California, a teary-eyed Lopez thanked her supporters, as well as those who have discredited her over the years. “I want to thank all the people who told me when I wasn’t in the room, or sometimes to my face, that I could never do this,” she said. “I really couldn’t have done this without you.” The 52-year-old icon also shouted out her children, ...
Elvis Presley’s thrusting pelvis really broke a lot of people’s brains in the 1950s. As the history goes, such rampant sexuality felt new and dangerous at the time — a facet largely on display in the exclusive clip from director Baz Luhrmann’s new Elvis biopic shown at the MTV Movie & TV Awards on Sunday night (June 5). Elvis, a film that feels like it should have an exclamation point at the end of it given Luhrman’s penchant for the operatic and melodramatic, follows The King from his early rise, and in the clip shown during the show, the pelvis-thrusting was really on full display, as moved to perfection by title star Austin Butler. “There’s a lot of people saying a lot of things,” Butler-as-Presley says into a microphone in a crowded room to...
