Barcelona prepared to sell top Manchester United target, could cost €50-60m

Barcelona have set an asking price for French winger Ousmane Dembele amid his reluctance to extend his contract with the club, Sport reports. The Frenchman joined the Blaugrana from Borussia Dortmund in 2017, but he has made only 112 appearances due to regular injury setbacks. However, he has stayed unscathed for most of the current campaign, which has brought the best out of him with 10 goals and four assists from 38 outings. The Blaugrana have been in negotiations with Dembele over a possible renewal, but he has not shown any indication that he will commit to a fresh deal. If his stand-off continues, the Catalan giants will reportedly sanction his sale this summer for €50-60 million as his contract expires in 14 months. Sportslens view: Dembele’s availability will attract interest from s...

Atletico Madrid decide on Lyon striker as Diego Costa replacement

Atletico Madrid have decided to sign Lyon striker Moussa Dembele as their replacement for Diego Costa, report Deportes Cuatro. Costa terminated his contract at Atleti at the end of last month so the club have been compiling data on his potential replacement with his wages now freed up in the squad. Striker Luis Suarez is now the main frontman at the club but with Alvaro Morata having also left over summer, there is a dearth of attacking options in the squad. French striker Dembele had netted an impressive 44 goals across his first full two seasons at Lyon – whom he joined from Celtic in 2018 – but has struggled this campaign, netting just once in 16 Ligue 1 appearances, of which just six have been from the start. It is now said by the report that Atleti are hopeful of taking advantage of t...

Lyon return empty-handed with prospect of losing key players

Had Olympique Lyonnais’ Memphis Depay and Karl Toko Ekambi found the back of the net in the opening 16 minutes against Bayern Munich on Wednesday, the Champions League may have had its first ever all-French final. Instead, Paris St Germain will now face the German champions while Lyon return home empty-handed and without the opportunity of righting those wrongs next season after they failed to qualify for Europe’s premier club competition. Ligue 1 was the only top-flight league from the ‘Big Five’ to prematurely end its season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, leaving Lyon in seventh place on a points-per-game basis — thereby missing out on the Europa League as well. The 3-0 scoreline flatters Bayern as Lyon had their chances but playing in only their second semi-final on the big stage, their ...

Champions League now a thorn in Pep Guardiola’s side

With the millions they have invested in top players and with the most respected coach of his generation in charge, Manchester City should be doing much better than going out of the Champions League in the last eight. But after their shock 3-1 defeat by Olympique Lyonnais on Saturday that is exactly what City have done in the last three years. Guardiola was brought into the club, by their Abu Dhabi based owner Sheikh Mansour, after his predecessor as manager, Chilean Manuel Pellegrini had taken the club to the semi-finals of the Champions League, while also winning the Premier League title. And while Guardiola has brought two Premier League titles, smashed records and produced some of the most glorious football the club’s fans have ever seen — European success remains elusive to his team. C...

The Athletic: Newcastle have ‘extensively’ watched 23 y/o player in red-hot form

It will be interesting to see how Newcastle United approach the transfer window once their takeover is completed. The would-be new owners are wealthy, no doubt, and there have been claims that they are willing to invest around £200m on recruitment and infrastructure. At the same time, the global economy has drastically changed due to the coronavirus pandemic and football clubs all over the world will take a cautious approach in the transfer market. Irrespective of who will be in the managerial hot-seat next season (Steve Bruce or any new candidate), the Magpies need to sign a striker. The £40m investment on Brazilian striker Joelinton becomes more baffling by the day given his poor return this season, while the likes of Andy Carroll and Dwight Gayle have made negligible...

Report: £60m Manchester United transfer could see Celtic get £4m windfall

According to The Scottish Sun, Celtic could get a £4 million windfall if Moussa Dembele leaves Lyon, with Manchester United, Chelsea and Barcelona interested in the striker. The report has claimed that United, Chelsea and Barcelona all are eyeing a £60 million move for the 23-year-old striker this summer. If the transfer happens, then the Hoops will get £4 million due to a sell-clause they inserted in the Frenchman’s contract when he joined Lyon from the Glasgow giants in the summer of 2018 for £20 million, according to the report. Stats According to WhoScored, Dembele scored 16 goals and provided two assists in 27 Ligue 1 matches, and played seven times in the Champions League for Lyon this season. The former Celtic star scored 15 goals and provided four assists in 33 league matches, and ...

Manchester United ahead of Chelsea in the race to sign £60m-rated French star

Manchester United are leading Chelsea in the race to sign Moussa Dembele during this summer’s transfer window, a report from The Star claims. Dembele is currently in his second season with Lyon where he has contributed 22 goals and seven assists across all competitions. A recent report from Manchester Evening News claimed that the Frenchman would find it hard to turn down a move to Old Trafford during the summer and it now appears that United are prepared to step up their interest. As per The Star, manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer sent scouts to monitor the striker’s progress on at least three occasions this term and the Frenchman is viewed as a replacement for Romelu Lukaku, who left the club for Inter Milan last summer. The 23-year-old has also been regularly linked with a move to Frank Lamp...

Victor Osimhen emerges fourth best scorer in Ligue 1

Victor Osimhen has emerged as the fourth highest goalscorer in the French Ligue 1 this season. The 2019/2020 campaign was cancelled last week, following the outbreak of the coronavirus pandemic. Osimhen, who joined Lille from Belgian outfit, Sporting Charleroi last summer scored 13 goals and bagged four assists in 27 league appearances for the Great Danes. Paris Saint-Germain’s Kylian Mbappe won the Golden Boot with 18 goals, while Monaco’s Ben Yedder came second with same number of goals. Mbappe edged out Ben Yedder because he scored more goals from open play. Three out of Ben Yedder’s 18 goals came from the spot while none of Mbappe’s 18 strikes were penalties. Mbappe also had a better goals-per-game ratio, scoring 18 in 20 – the same number in six games less than his rival Ben Yedder. M...
