Source: WENN/Avalon / WENN The teenager who captured the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police and started a worldwide movement is being honored with a medal of courage from a prestigious nonprofit. On Tuesday (Oct 27) PEN America announced they were honoring 17-year-old Darnella Frazier with the 2020 PEN/Beneson Award. “With nothing more than a cell phone and sheer guts, Darnella changed the course of history in this country, sparking a bold movement demanding an end to systemic anti-Black racism and violence at the hands of police,” PEN America CEO Suzanne Nossel said in a statement. “With remarkable steadiness, Darnella carried out the expressive act of bearing witness, and allowing hundreds of millions around the world to see what she saw.” On May 25, Frazier recorded Minneapol...

Los Angeles officials Tuesday demanded an independent probe into the death of a young Latino security guard, whose shooting by police has fueled more protests against police brutality and racism. Andres Guardado, 18, was killed last week after a deputy fired multiple gunshots in Gardena, Los Angeles County. Police say Guardado was shot when he fled from an auto repair shop after he “produced a handgun.” Guardado’s death came during a period of nationwide demonstrations that began with the death in police custody of an African American man, George Floyd, in Minnesota last month. Los Angeles County’s board of supervisors Tuesday unanimously approved a motion for a “robust and independent investigation to ensure the truth is uncovered and justice is served.” A day earlier, Los Angeles Sheriff...
A group of protesters toppled down a statue of Confederate General Albert Pike in Washington, D.C. on Friday night. The protesters gathered in Judiciary Square around the statue of Pike reportedly at around 11 p.m. (0400 GMT Saturday) and tore down the 120-year-old artwork 15 minutes later. The city’s only outdoor Confederate statue, after falling to the ground, was lit on fire before police officers arrived and extinguished the flames. The episode came on Juneteenth, which commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. President Donald Trump lashed out at the Washington, D.C. police for allowing the incident to happen. “The D.C. Police are not doing their job as they watch a statue be ripped down & burn. These people should be immediately arrested. A disgrace to our Country!” h...
In an extraordinary move, the Pentagon on Saturday said it put military units on a four-hour recall status to be ready if requested by Minnesota’s governor amid civil unrest following the killing of a black man by a white Minneapolis police officer. It was unclear when the U.S. military last invoked such a short timeline to potentially recall U.S. troops, something it might do for contingencies such as natural disasters. “At this time there is no request by the Governor of Minnesota for Title 10 forces to support the Minnesota National Guard or state law enforcement,” the Pentagon said in a statement. Source: Stephen Maturen / Getty George Floyd, the Houston native who was effectively murdered by Minneapolis police earlier this week, was in the front of the minds of those who gathered to protest his senseless death. As large crowds gathered in the southern section of the Minnesota city, police and protestors clashed not unlike demonstrations of the past sparked by similar circumstances. While an official tally of gatherers is largely unknown, thousands, or at the very least, hundreds, took to the streets of South Minneapolis as they met at a memorial site for Floyd. Known as “Big Floyd” by family and friends, the restaurant security guard and family man was targeted by police after allegedly attempting to use a counterfeit bill at a store. While outside sitting on the hood of his car, F...
