As Metallica goes, so goes the world? Seemingly, as drummer Lars Ulrich recently told CNBC he believes it might be a year “at the earliest” before arena- and stadium-sized concerts return following worldwide pandemic shutdowns. To that end, Metallica just postponed a previously rescheduled tour of South America, with their official website stating, “It is with a heavy heart that we’re back in this space seven months later to announce that our South American tour dates scheduled for December of this year are once again being postponed due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. We’re working closely with our local promoter partners to re-schedule these shows for hopefully in late 2021 and will have an update for you soon.” In the CNBC interview, the drummer tried to offer a positive spin, s...

The band, which has streamed shows going as far back as 1983, will conclude by airing a performance from Foro Sol in Mexico City from March 3, 2017. “When we started out with this little project, we thought we’d try something that would keep us busy and entertained in the face of the unknown. All of you made it something incredible. We watched you tune in week after week, and you blew us away, showing up to enjoy each show!” the band said in a statement. The shows have been aired include performance of Master in Puppets in full from 6/6/06, their first show from Colombia and a 2008 show from Madrid. In recent weeks, Metallica streamed a rain-soaked show from Mancheste...
Metallica shared a version of “For Whom the Bell Tolls” today (Aug. 20) from their upcoming S&M2 (Symphony and Metallica²) concert film, which is due out Aug. 28. The nearly five-minute version of the song, which originally appeared on 1984’s Ride the Lightning, sees singer/guitarist James Hetfield leading the crowd in a sing-along while San Francisco Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas conducts the orchestra and its xylophone players get after it. The film’s trailer and two previous songs, “All Within My Hand” and “Nothing Else Matters,” are here. S&M2 will feature 20 songs for more than two-and-a-half hours of music, recorded during a two-night stand in September 2019 at San Francisco’s Chase Center. The concert film had a one-night-only theatr...
Metallica performed a three-song set honoring the 29th anniversary of the Black Album on the Howard Stern Show on Wednesday and, at this point, it’s fair to say that “Nothing Else Matters.” The band ran through cuts “Wherever I May Roam” and “The Unforgiven,” as well as diving into an explosive, acoustic rendition of St. Anger’s “All Within My Hands.” The appearance was recorded in San Rafael, California and Stern called the whole thing “beautiful” by the time they wrapped up the trifecta of a set. Upon weeks of #MetallicaMondays performance and rumors of a new record on the way, which they apparently are working on via Zoom, the group will drop their live album S&M2 on Aug. 28, recorded last year alongside the San Francisco Symphon...
Metallica have just announced their first show of 2020. Like many artists who have tried to bring the live experience to their fans this summer, the heavy metal legends have announced a one-night-only concert that will premiere at drive-in theaters throughout North America on Aug. 29. As part of the ‘Encore Drive-In Nights’ concert series, Metallica will be filming the show at a secret location near their Northern California headquarters. “As many of you know, we’ve not played together in quite some time,” drummer Lars Ulrich said in the announcement video, “actually since the ‘S&M2′ concerts last September. But that’s all changing now as we’re gearing up to record a live show especially for you, just for you.” Aside fro...
With only weeks until the release of S&M2, Metallica shared a high-octane performance of “Moth Into Flame” from the live concert movie. For the song, which first appeared on the 2016 double-LP, Hardwired… to Self-Destruct, both James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett take their guitar solos off the stage and into the symphonic section — giving those who were at the show that night the 360-degree experience. Metallica have previously shared “Nothing Else Matters” and “All Within My Hands,” along with the trailer, which teases interviews with the band and classical music directors. S&M2 was filmed in 2019 on Sept. 6 and Sept. 8 at the Chase Center in San Francisco — the arena’s first-ever concerts. The sets reunited Metallica with the symphony after their 1999 collaboration...
Today James Hetfield turns 57 and Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains paid tribute to the Metallica frontman, heaping praise on someone he calls “the Godfather.” “What makes James such a great frontman is his physical presence,” he told Metal Hammer magazine. “Nobody else commands the same kind of respect and attention without it being self-seeking or egocentric. He’s all about the music; all about the fun and the celebration and the connection with the fans. And that, to me, is really inspiring. Especially because he’s done this for so long, and he’s been at the top of his game for so long and he continues to search for a deeper meaning. He took an underground thing and took it worldwide.” Cantrell pointed out that Metallica was “a...
Metallica’s ongoing livestream series has gone literally all over the band’s 40-year career to showcase performances that they consider to be among their most memorable. Tonight’s, however, will have fans busting out their devil horns. On June 6, 2006 (aka 6/6/06), the band invaded Berlin’s Waldbühne as part of their Escape From the Studio tour and performed their most metal set on this most metal of days. Metallica performed Master of Puppets from front-to-back, reminding fans why the 1986 album remains one of their most beloved. Prior to busting out the crowd favorite, the group debuted “The New Song,” which was their first original tune since 2003’s St. Anger. Recently, Metallica streamed their first show from Colombia and a 2008 show from Madrid. In recent...
Metallica’s James Hetfield took to Instagram on Monday morning to remember Oscar-winner Ennio Morricone, who composed 1966’s “The Ecstasy Of Gold,” which has opened the band’s shows for over 30 years. Morricone died Monday at 91 years old, and Hetfield writes that the legendary musician’s work had become “part of our blood flow, deep breathing, fist bumping, prayers and band huddle pre-show ritual.” “I have sang that melody thousands of times to warm up my throat before hitting the stage,” Hetfield wrote. “Thank you Ennio for pumping us up, being a big part of our inspiration, and a bonding between band, crew, and fan. I will forever think of you as part of the Metallica family.” Morricone’s career compositions span more than 500 films — including Quentin Tarantino’s The Hateful ...
