It looks like there’s a Metallica and Elton John collaboration in the works. During the most recent episode of his Apple Music 1 show Rocket Hour, John told guest SG Lewis that he recorded “something” with the rock legends. “I’ve just done something with Metallica, he divulged. “During this lockdown period, I’ve been working with Gorillaz and people like that. I haven’t been doing any Elton stuff, but I’ve been doing great stuff with other people.” The Gorillaz project Sir Elton is referring to is “Pink Phantom” — a track off Song Machine: Season One – Strange Timez that also features 6LACK. Earlier this year, Miley Cyrus detailed her upcoming Metallica cover album and revealed that she enlisted John to play piano on “Nothing Else Matters.” Could his recent recordi...

Metallica was the first band to rock the new Chase Center in San Francisco back in 2019 with their S&M2 concerts. Though they can’t be back at the arena in person just yet, James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett decided to throw their support behind the hometown Golden State Warriors ahead of their clash with the reigning NBA champion Los Angeles Lakers via an instrumental version of the “Star-Spangled Banner.” As you can see below, in just under 110 seconds, the duo slay it. This isn’t the first time, however, Hetfield and Hammett have shown off their anthem chops. Each year, Metallia pops up at neighboring AT&T Park to play the national anthem ahead of a San Francisco Giants game. And a few years ago, they performed the anthem at the Warriors’ old home, Oracle Arena, ahead of ...
Metallica’s All Within My Hands non-profit donated $75,000 to Feeding America to support the many Texans suffering since last month’s crippling blizzards and winter storms. The monetary gift will help provide aid to those in need of food and supplies after enduring weeks without power and safe drinking water. On their AWMH page, the band explained, “The winter storm that struck Texas last month was beyond anything the state’s residents could imagine preparing for. As temperatures dropped well below freezing and widespread power outages swept the area, families suffered. Grocery chains did the best they could to support their communities, but their supply was hit hard.” The statement continued about Metallica’s commitment to fighting food insecurity: “While temperatures ...
Metallica celebrated their groundbreaking Master Of Puppets record on the LP’s 35th birthday by performing its epic opening track, “Battery,” on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on March 3. When Colbert introduced the song, he noted that Master of Puppets had “such an impact that it was added to National Recording Registry of the Library of Congress.” The group previously performed “Enter Sandman” on The Late Show after the Super Bowl last month. Check out the band’s performance below. [embedded content] The band even broke out their original backdrop from the 1986-87 Damage, Inc. Tour, as Lars Ulrich noted on his Instagram. Using the “old wrinkled backdrop” led the drummer to comment, “Considering what craziness it’s been exposed to over its lifetime, it’s...
Over the course of the last pandemic-filled year, Twitch has become the go-to place for a lot of musicians to perform and interact with fans without breaking quarantine. The fact that it was actually designed for livestreams (unlike Instagram, Facebook, or YouTube) made it a natural fit for those who weren’t looking to play awkward drive-in concerts or other “socially distanced” shows. Unfortunately, the platform’s surge of popularity within the music world also exposed one of Twitch’s biggest problems, which is the ongoing battle over streaming music rights all centered around the Digital Millennium Copyright Act of 1998 (better known as the DMCA). To make an extremely long story that you can read elsewhere short, Twitch has an algorithm that automatically mutes streams (or portions ...
Following a whirlwind day of music, it’s fitting that Metallica topped off the day with an appearance on the Late Show With Stephen Colbert. Instead of unveiling something new, the rock giants went back 30 years to perform their signature song, “Enter Sandman,” which was performed from the band’s studio in the Bay Area. Check it out below: Metallica wrapped up a star-studded Super Bowl weekend that included Green Day performing at the NFL Honors award ceremony Saturday night, Miley Cyrus hyping the crowd during the TikTok pregame celebration, and of course the Weeknd’s electric halftime set. Back in November, Metallica debuted an acoustic rendition of “Blackened” and an electric version of “Disposable Heroes.” Though they’ve been busy playing virtual shows, drummer Lars Ulrich doesn’t...
Let’s face it: With most “Best Albums” lists, you know the broad strokes of the ranking before you even click. Part of that predictability is understandable: Most iconic records earn their reputation. But these rankings shouldn’t be fossilized, and a shit-ton of amazing LPs have been shoved aside in the pursuit of maintaining the status quo. We didn’t ignore the unimpeachable on our list — you’ll see plenty of the staples you’ve come to expect. But we also hope we’ll spark your curiosity and encourage you to hunt for a title you may have missed over the last 35 years. 35. With love songs, of course. ...
Last night, Alice in Chains were honored as the recipients of the 2020 Founder’s Award from the Museum of Pop Culture (MoPop). Metallica, Korn, Heart’s Ann Wilson, Mark Lanegan and Alice in Chains themselves performed more than 20 songs during the livestream event that paid tribute to the Seattle quartet. Additionally, friends and fans ranging from Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder to Iron Man actor Robert Downey, Jr. shared congratulations. Alice in Chains themselves were shown in often-humorous segments, touring the museum exhibits, which include Jimi Hendrix guitars, DEVO jumpsuits, and numerous items of iconic horror film memorabilia. The virtual event was viewed by more than 275,000 people worldwide and raised more than $600,000 to keep the museum and its educational and co...
We know, we know — the best concert of all-time is your friend’s obscure indie-punk band playing a sweaty neighborhood basement back in ‘94. We admit that one slipped through the cracks. Maybe it’s a fool’s errand, but this list is our attempt to narrow down three and a half decades of worthy live music events — legendary festivals, headlining tours from major artists, one-off stage collaborations, multimedia spectacles — into an eclectic and satisfying blend. – Ryan Reed 35. So it’s heartening that Heilung’s debut l...
Yesterday, Metallica treated fans to the All Within My Helping Hands benefit concert and auction. As with most events in 2020, the set was virtual. The setlist consisted of stripped down versions of Metallica originals “Blackened,” “Creeping Death,” “The Unforgiven,” “Now That We’re Dead,” “Nothing Else Matters” and “All Within My Hands,” as well as covers of Deep Purple’s “When A Blind Man Cries” and Bob Seger’s “Turn The Page.” For the electric set, Metallica reimagined “Disposable Heroes,” which James Hetfield described as “a heavy song we did acoustic, and we’re doing it heavy the acoustic-version way,” and performed “Wasting My Hate̶...
