Metallica Rock With Stranger Things Actor Joseph Quinn Backstage at Lollapalooza

On Thursday night, Metallica rocked Lollapalooza with a thunderous, nearly two-hour set that closed with “Master of Puppets,” joining Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill” to get a boost from Stranger Things. Before their set, there was a moment that would have made the fictional Eddie Munson proud. As shared in a clip by Netflix, Metallica was joined by none other than Munson actor Joseph Quinn for a jam session backstage. It’s hard to tell who was more excited by the meeting. “I’m a big fan of [Stranger Things]. Have been since Season One,” Metallica’s James Hetfield told Quinn. “My kids and I, it’s a bonding experience for us.” The singer/guitarist also told Quinn that he was taller than he seemed to be on TV and Quinn went on to thank the band for allowing the show to license the Metallic...

James Hetfield Congratulates Woman Who Gave Birth During Metallica Show

At this point in their career, Metallica have seen just about everything — at least that’s what they thought. At last Saturday’s show in Brazil, Metallica fan Joice M. Figueiró literally gave birth while the band performed “Enter Sandman” at the Estádio Couto Pereira. Figueiró said she began having contractions as Metallica started their set. Since she and her husband had tickets for the show for nearly three years, they decided to stay (with the approval of her doctor). Figueiró made it to “Enter Sandman” before heading to the venue’s medical area, where her newborn was delivered. “Luan Figueiró came into the world on 05/07/2022 at 23:15 shaking all the metal structures,” Figueiró wrote in an Instagram post. She did joke that she was considering naming him “James Ulrich” in honor of ...

The 90 Greatest Albums of the ’90s

This article originally appeared in the September 1999 issue of SPIN. “You must be high.” We heard that a lot during the time we spent preparing this issue. Which is understandable. Pronouncing the 90 greatest albums of the ’90s is a somewhat presumptuous thing to do. When you’re measuring the music this decade is offering to history—the sounds we partied with, copulated to, fought about, and wept over—everyone has an opinion. That ours should be more valid than yours is debatable. But hey—it’s our magazine. What, then, you ask, constitutes “greatest”? Don’t even start. Suffice it to say that, after much heated discussion and countless veiled insults, it came down to the factors of both remarkable artistry and cultural shock value. Sometimes a record’s knock-you-off-your-Skechers impa...

Metallica also treated fans to deep cuts, playing “Trapped Under Ice” for the first time since 2012 and live-debuting the eight-minute Reload track “Fixxxer.” [embedded content][embedded content] A few songs in, frontman James Hetfield thanked fans for sticking with th...

Precious Metal: Our 1991 Metallica Cover Story

This article originally appeared in the October 1991 issue of SPIN. In honor of Metallica playing their 40th anniversary shows in San Francisco this weekend, we’re republishing it here. Near the end of Metallica‘s last tour, rhythm guitarist and vocalist James Hetfield got the idea for a party. “It was going to be great,” he says. “Farm animals, midgets serving drinks, tits everywhere—that kind of shit. Jägermeister ended up sponsoring the thing and giving away free drinks. There were barf puddles everywhere.” There was only one problem. “The midgets wouldn’t do it. They heard the name Metallica, and they said no, we’ll get abused.” The midgets weren’t the first ones to balk at the name Metallica. For what a name it is! It suggests not a band but an Orwellian nation, like Oceania. That ext...

To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Metallica’s self-titled album (better known as The Black Album), the heavy metal legends hit The Howard Stern Show to discuss both the classic album and the new covers album, The Metallica Blacklist. Featuring a wide variety of artists (some expected and some very, very not) covering their favorite tracks on The Black Album, one of the dozen renditions of “Nothing Else Matters” on The Metallica Blacklist features none other than Miley Cyrus and Sir Elton John, both of whom happened to be with the band for their Stern appearance. While only Cyrus performed the track with the Napster-hating legends, the 74-year-old icon shared his love for the track when explaining why he volunteered to play piano on it. “This is one of the best s...
