Mastodon, Darkest Hour, Kvelertak, Baroness Members Cover Ozzy Osbourne on Two Minutes to Late Night

Quarantine cover series Two Minutes to Late Night pays homage to Halloween by covering Ozzy Osbourne’s 1982 solo hit, “Over The Mountain.” The ever-shifting metal consortium who performs the true-to-the-original cover is Mastodon’s Brann Dailor, Darkest Hour/Be Well’s Mike Schleibaum, Kvelertak’s Marvin Nygaard, Baroness’ Seb Thomson, and host Gwarsenio Hall. The original of the tune featured late, great guitarist Randy Rhoads. The band tosses in a moment of Black  Sabbath’s titular “Black Sabbath” to up the spookiness in the tune, plus, for more Halloween-ness, there’s a background of a costume store, and Dailor, in further homage to the Prince of Darkness, bit the head of a plush bat. Check out the tune below. [embedded content] The show recently shared some killer covers of&nb...

Mastodon, Russian Circles Members Cover Alice in Chains

Two Minutes To Late Night has given us plenty of collaborations to remember this year, but the talk show’s latest concoction might just be its best. As part of an ongoing quarantine cover series, appropriately named show host Gwarsenio Hall enlisted Mastodon’s Brann Dailor, Russian Circles’ Mike Sullivan, Justin Suitor of Painted Wives and Cave In’s Stephen Brodsky to take on Alice in Chains’ ’92 cut “Rain When I Die.” The guys shred throughout, with intricate harmonies laced into the wah-wah-backed cover. And as an added bonus, we get a glimpse of their home studio setups. “Martin Scorsese’s Alice in Chains doesn’t live here anymore,” the video’s YouTube caption read. “We covered ‘Rain When I Die’ and we did it with some added panache.” The show recently shared some ki...

99 Metal Musicians Join Forces to Cover ’99 Bottles of Beer’

If 99 metal musicians teamed up to sing “99 Bottles of Beer,” you’d think it was a joke, right? Well, it’s 2020, so nothing is not insane, and that’s exactly what happened. The project was put together by Scour’s Derek Engemann and Nest’s John Jarvis. All proceeds from the song will benefit the Old Dog Haven, a charity that helps old dogs find homes. Assembling the track literally took years. “This has been an epically fun project involving the entire Metal scene, and even a few Ska bands! This project originally began back in 2013, but was brought back to life once we discovered Old Dog Haven,” Engemann said on a GoFundMe page for the charity. “The ’99 Bottles’ has truly shown the good side of humanity during these wild times that we are in. I was amazed at all of the peopl...

Mastodon Announce ‘Medium Rarities’ LP, Share Ferocious Song ‘Fallen Torches’

Mastodon issued a previously unreleased song, the ferocious “Fallen Torches,” and announced a new compilation LP, Medium Rarities. The album, which follows 2017’s Emperor of Sand, is out on Sept. 11 via Reprise Records. “Fallen Torches,” like most of the set’s other rare tunes, makes its digital debut. Mastodon recorded the song last year in Atlanta, recruiting guest vocals from Neurosis’ Scott Kelly, their longtime friend and collaborator. The band originally planned to issue the track in support of a European tour, but they held off in order to focus on Stairway to Nick John, a tribute to their late longtime manager Nick John. Medium Rarities features cover versions (including Feist’s “A Commotion,” The Flaming Lips’ “A Spoonful Weighs a Ton,” Metallica’s “Orion”), soundtr...

Mastodon’s Brent Hinds Covered Black Sabbath’s ‘Electric Funeral’ With Marcus King

Mastodon’s Brent Hinds teamed with Marcus King on Monday night to cover Black Sabbath’s “Electric Funeral” and ZZ Top’s “Thunderbird” during a livestreamed charity concert. The show was the third installment of King’s “Four of a Kind” live stand supporting MusiCares, the Recording Academy’s nonprofit organization helping musicians during times of crisis. Spotify’s COVID-19 Music Relief project is matching donations up to a collective total of $10 million. As Jambase reports, King will close out the series with a tribute to The Band’s The Last Waltz. In May, Mastodon guitarist Bill Kelliher noted that the band has “20 rough songs” recorded for their upcoming eighth LP, which follows 2017’s Emperor of Sand. They’re also contributing a song to the upcoming Bill & Ted sequel. Dru...

Mastodon, Tool, Primus, Coheed and Cambria Members Cover Rush’s ‘Anthem’

Jordan Olds took his Two Minutes To Late Night series to a new level on Monday, releasing a star-studded cover of Rush’s “Anthem.” Check out the video below. The line-up features Mastodon’s Bill Kelliher and Mutoid Man/Cave In’s Steve Brodsky on guitar, Tool’s Danny Carey behind the drums, Primus’ Les Claypool on bass and Coheed and Cambria’s Claudio Sanchez handling vocals. The home-recorded, quarantine-style video features some pretty impressive green-screen action, cool duplicating effects and, of course, killer instrumentation. “Uhhh… Holy Moley. It’s Claudio Sanchez, Bill Kelliher, Les Claypool, Danny Carey, and Steve Brodsky covering a Rush song,” the video’s caption reads. “We’re just as surprised as you are. This is our 15th bedroom cover made with the support of Pat...

Mastodon’s Brann Dailor: New LP Features Prettiness, ‘Super Progginess’

Mastodon are tough to categorize in the first place, but the prog-metal band’s upcoming eighth album sounds like it will be impossible to pigeonhole. Drummer Brann Dailor detailed the project’s sprawling sonic landscapes in a new interview with Metal Hammer, calling it “all over the map.” “There’s some big, big heavy riffs that are happening, so that’s what I’m into,” he said of the LP, which is tentatively due out in 2021. “And then there’s some guitar gymnastics by Brent Hinds that have been some of the most difficult things I’ve tried to wrap my head around and play drums to.” He continued, “So there’s some super progginess coming from him, and some really super pretty moments. But there’s some rockers in there, too. There’s some heavy, fast stuff as well. But a lot of it is kind of doo...

Mastodon Recording New Song for Bill and Ted Face the Music

It’s been a while since we last heard from prog-metal titans Mastodon. It appears as if that’s about to change. In a fairly wide-ranging conversation on the RocknRoll Beer Guy podcast, guitarist Bill Kelliher said the group has “20 rough songs” recorded and that they’re working on a song for the upcoming Bill and Ted movie. “We got asked, like a couple months ago, to be a part of the new ‘Bill & Ted’ movie, to put a song in there,” he said. “So we wrote a song to be in that movie which we’re kinda of wrapping up now. It’s pretty fun.” Excellent! Kelliher also got into the vibe of what a new Mastodon album is going to sound like. He said that before COVID-19 hit, the band had “20 rough songs” recorded. “I’ve definitely been writing like a madman, like crazy. It’s different than Emperor ...
