HipHopWired Featured Video Source: Greg Doherty / Getty / Samuel L. Jackson Samuel L. Jackson had thoughts on Quentin Tarantino’s unwanted opinion on actors who star in Marvel Studios movies. Nothing grinds white movie directors’ gears more than the popularity of comic book movies, mainly Marvel Studios films. Quentin Tarantino, who has a penchant for abusing the N-word in his films, is the latest director to gripe about superhero films. In a recent episode of the 2 Bears,1 Cave podcast, Tarantino dropped a ridiculous hot take claiming actors who star in the film become obsolete. “Part of the Marvel-ization of Hollywood is…you have all these actors who have become famous playing these characters,” Tarantino said. “But they’re not movie stars. Right? Captain America is the star. Or Thor is ...
The Avengers star Samuel L. Jackson responded to his Pulp Fiction director Quentin Tarantino’s recent comments about the the “Marvel-ization of Hollywood” during an appearance on the November 29th episode of The View. Per EW, Jackson challenged his longtime collaborator’s claim that Marvel actors are not movie stars by pointing to the late Chadwick Boseman. “It takes an actor to be those particular characters, and the sign of movie stardom has always been, what, asses in seats? What are we talking about?” said Jackson, who has been a lynchpin in the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the role of Nick Fury since 2008. “That’s not a big controversy for me to know that apparently these actors are movie stars. Chadwick Boseman is Black Panther. You can’t refute that, and he’s a movie star.” Jac...
The Pitch: Did you know that in Britain, there’s a long and proud tradition of ongoing series putting out special episodes for the holidays? More often than not, they’re even broadcast on Christmas Day, when it seems that entire nation turns into couch potatoes. In America, though, our more couch potato-y holiday happens to be Thanksgiving, and our biggest ongoing series happens to be the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Thus, this week’s release of The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special feels pretty apt. Clocking in at 42 minutes (including post-credits scene), James Gunn’s breezy holiday confection offers a little bit of set-up as to where the titular Guardians, including Peter Quill (Chris Pratt), Mantis (Pom Klementieff), Drax (Dave Bautista), Nebula (Karen Gillen), Rocket (Bradley Coop...
It’s open season on all suckheads, as Marvel has tapped Yann Demange as the new director of Blade. The French filmmaker is known for executive producing and directing episodes of both HBO’s beloved but short-lived Lovecraft Country and UK crime drama Top Boy. On the full-length feature side of things, he helmed 2018’s White Boy Rick and 2014’s ’71. Demange replaces Bassam Tariq, who left the production in September just weeks before filming was scheduled to start. While Tariq is set to remain as an executive producer, Kevin Feige and his team decided not to try and skate up hill with a flailing production, instead hitting pause while they went for a complete reset. Advertisement Mahershala Ali is still onboard to star as the day-walking vampire hunter, but Demange isn’t the only new c...
With their fast-paced action and devoted fanbases, there’s a bit of overlap in the Venn diagram between the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Quentin Tarantino movies. But, unsurprisingly, the filmmaker has no interest making the leap to superhero projects, saying in a new interview with the LA Times that he thinks directors in the MCU are just “hired hands” in need of a quick gig. “You have to be a hired hand to do those things,” Tarantino said. “I’m not a hired hand. I’m not looking for a job.” According to what the Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood director writes in his new book Cinema Speculation, today’s filmmakers “can’t wait for the day” that superhero movies are no longer en vogue, likening it to the same reaction some directors in the 1960s had when studio musicals w...
Aubrey Plaza will join Kathryn Hahn in the upcoming WandaVision spinoff Agatha: Coven of Chaos, reports Variety. In the Marvel series, Hahn will reprise her career-defining role as Agatha Harkness, but details about the show are scarce. What we do know, however, is Emma Caulfield Ford will also return from WandaVision as Dottie along with head writer and executive producer Jac Schaefer. Heartstopper actor Joe Locke will also star in Coven of Chaos. We named WandaVision our best TV show of 2021 in no small part due to the performance of Hahn, who nailed a transformation from Wanda’s chipper next-door neighbor Agnes to Salem Witch Trial survivor Agatha Harkness. During the finale of WandaVision, Wanda neutralizes Agatha’s formidable powers. Advertiseme...
