In SPIN‘s new festival-based video series, “Walk With Me,” we take a stroll through festival grounds, cities, venues and more with some of our favorite artists. For the first episode, we went for a quick walk around Coachella with Missy from Mannequin Pussy to chat about the band’s two-year wait to perform, discuss punk rock at a very pop-based festival, and rock out to a little Turnstile. Take a look at the video below. In the first episode of “Walk With Me,” Yungblud gave us a tour of Hollywood’s Sunset Strip as a part of our cover story feature on him, You Deserve to Make Money Even When you are looking for Dates Online. So we reimagined what a dating should be. It begins with giving you back power. Get to meet Beautiful people, chat and make money in the process. Earn rewards by c...
First, let’s take care of the obvious. Despite the still-persistent narrative that such music is “dead,” there are way more than 50 excellent rock bands out there. And there’s no exact science to scooping the cream of the crop. Our list includes arena-packing veterans but also semi-obscure indie acts who’ve barely escaped their basements. There are no hard rules here. Our methodology was simple: ask our writers and staff which rock bands feel worthy of recognition right now. But we did aim for a wide scope — throughout, you’ll find flavors of psych, post-punk, hardcore, metal, even country. If it feels like rock, it’s on the table. Consider SPIN‘s 2021 roundup — just like last year’s — a thermometer, taking the temperature of modern rock in all its various mutations. Altın Gün Ho...
Welcome to the second edition of Difficult Fun! Each month, SPIN will spotlight the best punk on the planet and discuss it here, with the ambition of challenging preconceived notions of what the four-letter word actually means and, ideally, entertaining readers in the process. Purists, piss off! Everyone else, enjoy. Another month, another round of Difficult Fun. Where does the time go? Wasn’t it just yesterday that the shitshow “September 11 Memorial” Madball, Murphy’s Law, and Bloodclot gig in New York City’s Tompkins Square Park became ‘80s punks own Sturgis Motorcycle Rally COVID-19 event? (Someone tell John Joseph endangering fans is “for pussies,” to borrow The Cro-Mags man’s Cro-Magnon-like language. I cringe.) Regardless, in May, good, innovative punk endured, because good, innovat...
Since 2019, the Philadelphia-based punk band Mannequin Pussy has been operating on another level. They began working with prolific emo producer Will Yip, moved to Epitaph Records, and garnered widespread acclaim for their third record, Patience. COVID-19 may have slowed their momentum, but the now-trio of vocalist-guitarist Marisa “Missy” Dabice, drummer Kaleen Reading, and bassist Colins “Bear” Regisford prove that they’ve lost none of their fury, intensity, or singularity on their new EP, Perfect. After spending time in lockdown, the group reunited in person to record new material. Although they had already written two songs before the recording sessions began, they wrote the other three in that moment. As Dabice said in the EP’s press release, “We just figured if we forced ourselves int...
After Patience released during the summer of 2019, Mannequin Pussy seemed poised to become the next big thing in punk. The Philadelphia band with a name that no one could forget saw their stock soar for the rest of the year after their first release on Epitaph Records, with sold-out shows across the country and billings on what were sure to be some of 2020’s biggest events, including Coachella. It was the bump that vocalist/guitarist Missy and the rest of the band needed to quit their day jobs and make their passion a full-time profession, and there was no sign of them slowing down. Of course, that was all before the COVID-19 pandemic hit and shut everything down, shortening Mannequin Pussy’s reign at the top of the modern punk scene to a brief seven-month stint. But rather than dwel...
The indie-punkers in Mannequin Pussy are back with a follow-up to 2019’s Patience, and by the sound of the new EP’s first song, they’re picking up right where they left off. The five-song venture is titled Perfect and set to release via Epitaph on May 21, and it figures to be a major release for an excellent band that’s seemed right on the verge of breaking into the mainstream for years now. Each of the band’s existing three full-lengths has garnered more praise than the last, with Patience being praised as one of the best albums to come out mere months before COVID-19 shut the world down. <!– // Brid Player Singles. var _bp = _bp||[]; _bp.push({ “div”: “Brid_10143537”, “obj”: {“id”:”25115″,”widthR...
With everyone sequestered and self-quarantining due to the coronavirus, we’ve asked our favorite artists to come up with playlists that keep you entertained. This edition is by Marisa Dabic, the singer/guitarist of Philadelphia-based punk band Mannequin Pussy: Fever Blush – “Remember”I know close to nothing about this band. I think they’re from Nashville? Last I checked they only have two songs out – this being one of them. To me, this is a perfect rock ballad – it just hits in that way. It feels familiar but it’s new. Every time I’ve put this song on somewhere – someone inevitably asks me who this band is and I’m have to say uh I don’t really know but I wish I did. The Spirit of the Beehive – “Without You (In My Pocket)”Rivka & Zack’s vocals melt into each other so beautifully on this...
