Jordan Henderson says Liverpool are not making any excuses ahead of a period filled with matches. The Reds face four huge games in the next 12 days, including an away trip to Manchester City. “We do have a tough period coming up, yeah, but we love playing football. We want to play these games,” Henderson said. “If you look back a few months ago and were sitting in the house during lockdown, couldn’t go out…we’d have played football every single day if we could. There are a lot of things going on in the world and it’s tough for people sitting at home. These things have a huge impact on people. So we really have to try and put a smile on the face – even if it is just for tonight. “So for us, it is physically demanding, but we are used to it. And we enjoy it. “We will use all the lads in the ...
Jose Mourinho has slammed VAR after incidents in the Merseyside derby and Manchester City’s win over Porto in the Champions League. Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford was not sent off after a horrible tackle on Virgil van Dijk, while Ilkay Gundogan escaped punishment after fouling Porto goalkeeper Agustin Marchesin. Tottenham boss Mourinho thinks both players should have been sent off and wants changes made to the VAR system. “I think the attention [the incidents have received] is based on the fact that there is a VAR. Without VAR, the situations on the pitch happen and the human being, the referee, makes mistakes,” Mourinho said. “And you know me for quite a few years – it was difficult for me to accept the human mistakes but I learned and in this moment, I always accept the referee’s mis...
Manchester City were held to a 1-1 draw by West Ham United in their Premier League clash at the London Stadium on Saturday. Michail Antonio put the home team ahead with a sublime overhead kick in the 18th minute. The goal was given after a check for handball against Tomas Soucek. Phil Foden replaced Sergio Aguero at half-time and restored parity for the visitors. The midfielder equalised with a well-taken strike six minutes into the second half. Manchester City’s flight to London had to be rerouted after a technical issue on the plane meant that they could not land at their scheduled destination. The first-team squad flew to the capital on Friday ahead of City’s lunchtime Premier League clash with West Ham United. But their flight had to redirected from City Airport to London Stansted more than 30 miles away. Goal reports that there was a problem with the plane’s anti-skid system which meant that it could not land at an airport with a short runway. The team suffered a slight delay ahead of travelling to the hotel before Saturday’s clash. It is understood that there was no fault on the part of the airport but the flight would not have needed to be rerouted had it been scheduled to land at a major airport. In 2016, a City team fligh...
Manchester United will approach Saturday’s home English Premier League (EPL) clash with Chelsea in buoyant mood rather than in trepidation. This is after a week which has gone some way to banishing the gloom that was descending on Old Trafford. After going into this month’s international break with a 6-1 home defeat by Tottenham Hotspur, they have emerged from it with a couple of victories which have kick-started their campaign. Last weekend’s 4-1 win at Newcastle United was followed by a 2-1 victory away to Paris St-Germain (PSG) in the UEFA Champions League. For now at least, the critics have been silenced. Chelsea’s visit, however, presents a test of Manchester United’s upswing as they seek their first home league points of the season. This is in the wake of defeats by Crystal Palce and...
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has confirmed that midfielder Fernandinho will be out for a long time after picking up an injury against Porto in the Champions League last night. The Brazilian midfielder is a key player for City and his absence will be a major blow for the side. The Premier League giants are already dealing with injuries to Laporte, Mendy, Ake, De Bruyne and Jesus. Fernandinho’s versatility and experience makes him an even bigger miss. The Brazilian has been ever-present for Manchester City since his move to Etihad. He can play as a defensive midfielder as well as a centre back and it will be interesting to see how Guardiola’s side cope with his absence. Fernandinho came on with just six minutes left but he had to off almost immediately with a knock. Guardiola will b...
Thibaut Courtois has insisted Real Madrid are “always the favourites” for the Champions League while expressing his confidence that the Blancos can conquer Europe again in 2020-21. Madrid have won the competition a record 13 times, six more than any other club, but an underwhelming start to the La Liga season has hardly served to inspire confidence they can claim a 14th title come May. Madrid are third in the early La Liga standings, one point behind early leaders Real Sociedad having slumped to a 1-0 home loss to newly-promoted Cadiz last time out. Zinedine Zidane’s side failed to reach the quarter-finals last season, losing in a two-legged last-16 tie to Manchester City with a five-month interval between the games due to the suspension of football amid the Covid-19 crisis. Drawn in Group...
This weekend across Europe brings several intriguing clashes, most notably in England, with a Merseyside derby between Everton and Liverpool. The Toffees are off to a tremendous start with a perfect 4-0-0 record and will be looking to win their first derby against the Reds since 2010. Meanwhile, Arsenal and Manchester City will meet at the Etihad in another high-profile fixture. Over in Italy, we’ll have a Derby di Milano between Inter and AC Milan at the San Siro, with both sides also playing solid football early on in the campaign. Another match to keep an eye on this weekend in Serie A will feature a high-flying Atalanta squad facing Gennaro Gattuso’s Napoli. Lastly over in Germany, Borussia Dortmund visits Hoffenheim, who is tied with Lucien Favre’s side in sixth place currently. Evert...
Jamie O’Hara suggested on talkSPORT (9:40am, October 13, 2020) that Manchester City should consider appointing Leeds United head coach Marcelo Bielsa as their manager in the future. The former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder and talkSPORT pundit believes that if Pep Guardiola leaves City at the end of the season, then the former Premier League champions should consider appointing Bielsa as his replacement. O’Hara said on talkSPORT (9:40am, October 13, 2020): “I know he doesn’t sign long-term contracts, I know Guardiola’s coming to the end of his contract. “If they don’t win it this year and Guardiola decides that he wants to do something else, we talk about Pochettino, but Bielsa for Man City for me is a manager that they should seriously have a think about. “I don’t want to put something out...
Leeds United have impressed upon returning to the English Premier League following a 16-year absence. Marcelo Bielsa’s side suffered a narrow 4-3 loss at the hands of Liverpool on the opening weekend of the campaign before securing victories over Fulham and Sheffield United. Leeds held Manchester City to a 1-1 draw at Elland Road on Saturday, and England international right-back Kyle Walker still can’t believe how challenging it was to come up against them. The Whites weren’t the second-best team against Pep Guardiola’s side, and that hardly happens. “It’s like basketball,” the £50 million star told Andros Townsend on The ITV Football show. “I couldn’t believe it. Say Raheem was playing on the left and he goes to the right, their right-back is going over to the right with him. It’s incredi...
Tottenham Hotspur handed Manchester United a 6-1 demolition at Old Trafford today. While Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side scored first – barely a minute into the clash – it was Jose Mourinho’s men who had the last laugh, going 4-1 up after 45 minutes. Spurs added two more goals in the second half to deal a huge blow on the Red Devils who were reduced to 10 men after Anthony Martial was sent off in the first half. Man Utd’s city neighbours and bitter rivals Manchester City definitely enjoyed the game, sending this message to Tottenham on Twitter after the final whistle: 🤝 @SpursOfficial https://t.co/CcLAb2gcmO — Manchester City (@ManCity) October 4, 2020 Spurs’ duo Harry Kane and Son Heung-min each got a brace and an assist, with Serge Aurier and Tanguy Ndombele getting on the score shee...
