Lucy Dacus released a new single “Kissing Lessons” along with an accompanying video calling back to her childhood. The new single explores Dacus’ experiences with a childhood friend as they disguise their innocent childhood romance as practice for the day weʼd start breaking hearts and taking names.” The upbeat nature of the song and narrative lyrical style conveys the sweet and innocent, yet infatuated, nature of the friendship. “Rachel was a year older when I was in the second grade, I thought she might know everything. I took her word like a golden ring,” Dacus sings. “Kissing Lessons” was recorded and mixed alongside Dacus’ acclaimed 2021 album Home Video. The shakey home video-esque filming style of the accompanying video brings out the song’s continuation of childhood themes tha...
On at least three occasions on stage this year when Lucy Dacus would launch into one of her highly personal songs, like, say “Thumbs” or “Please Stay” off her critically acclaimed album Home Video, she’d straight-up start to cry. “Yeah, there were maybe three shows on this past tour where it just really got to me and I fucking cried like a baby,” Dacus admits over Zoom of how impactful it was to play such personal material for her fans. “I don’t know if people really noticed me crying,” she says before pausing and adding, “well, yeah, there was one show where people really noticed.” Dacus has been open about just how difficult the pandemic was on her mental well-being and, to that end, returning to the road in 2021 was nothing short of therapeutic for the musician. “It’s just so meaningful...

Lucy Dacus preached her true feelings about vacation bible school while rocking out on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon last night. [embedded content][embedded content] Singing “VBS” off her recently released Home Video, Dacus begins serenading the crowd as if they were children at a Christian summer camp. Way too many flashbacks crawled out from the deep parts of my brain as Dacus reminisced on the summer of ’07—befriending the preacher in a t-shirt, being told to “spread the word,” and worshipping before bed. With faux stained glass windows behind her and all musicians bearing white cloaks, Dacus tangibly furthers the aura of “VBS,” alongside the theme of reason behind both the church and her track. Your dad keeps his sleeves down through the summer for a reasonYour mother wea...
Lucy Dacus released a video for the third single “Brando” off her newest album, Home Video. Inviting fans to send in clips of themselves dancing, skateboarding, jumping, and singing, the video is a compilation from over 100 submissions and is as nice as you’d expect. Inside the blue animated border mimicking an old-school television set, Dacus’ fans show a range of talent from ballet dancing in a river to strumming a ukulele in a forest. Lots of cats made the cut, with quick cuts to rollerbladers and even some gloved hands acting out a puppet show over a shower curtain. Check it out below. [embedded content] “Big thank you to everyone who submitted,” Dacus said in a statement. “These videos brought me a lot of joy and made me feel more connected to the song and all of you.” Dacus will emba...
Since the pandemic, NPR’s Tiny Desk (Home) concerts have taken on all kinds of forms. But for hers, Lucy Dacus took us back to her high school in Richmond, Virginia — where she went with two members of her band, guitarist Jacob Blizard and audio engineer, Collin Pastore. The band played four songs from Dacus’s recently-released album, Home Video: “Brando,” “VBS” (which stands for Vacation Bible School), “Going Going Gone,” and then “Thumbs.” “Going Going Gone” offered a mix of not two, not three, but four acoustic guitars in unison, creating a wall of sound. Peaceful backup vocals from band members make it sound closer to the studio recording on Home Video. The keys give the tune a more lightweight feel, combatting the heavy lyrics about the “cycle of innocence to corruption to fear” ...
