Saturday Night Live creator and showrunner Lorne Michaels has shared that he still has “no plans to retire” from his duties at the long-running NBC program despite the seismic cast shake-up this summer and the show’s impending 50th season in 2024-2025. In an interview with The New York Times, the 77-year old prefaced the show’s 48th season by calling it “a year of reinvention” and attributed the personnel overhaul as an expected shift that was delayed by the onset of COVID-19. “The pandemic had put us in this position where no one could really leave, because there were no jobs.,” he shared. “And at the same time, if I don’t add new people every year, then the show isn’t the show. There have to be new people, for both our sake and also for the audience.” Michaels has shepherded numerous sea...
Pete Davidson had one final treat for SNL viewers before ending his seven-season run: a rap tribute video to the show’s creator, Lorne Michaels. The skit, which was apparently cut for time, begins with host Natasha Lyonne informing Davidson that Michaels is depressed because the two never got to make a rap video together. “You know, that guy has literally done everything for me, so I’m going to pay him back by doing this rap video exactly the way he wrote it,” decades Davidson. Set to the tune of “Forgot the Dre,” David proceeds to honor Michaels’ legacy by ratting off his many accomplishments — from discovering comedians like Chris Farley, David Spade, and Kristen Wiig, to writing Three Amigos, to winning the Presidential Medal of Freedom. The accompanying visuals feature Davidson dressed...
Cue the bass and roll footage of Toronto, The Kids in the Hall are back. Over 25 years after Season 5 ended, and some 12 years after the 2010 miniseries Death Comes to Town, everyone’s favorite Canadian sketch troupe is literally rising from the dead in the new Red Band trailer for Season 6. The preview opens with ominous lightning as a backhoe exhumes a grave marked “THE KIDS IN THE HALL TV SERIES 1989-1995.” The camera finds Dave Foley, Bruce McCullouch, Kevin McDonald, Mark McKinney, and Scott Thompson six feet under, and together they wake up screaming. The trailer cuts to Foley and McKinney playing the suits responsible, with McKinney dusting off his impression of the series’ executive producer Lorne Michaels. “Well, the curse is lifted and the kids are b...
After years of being typecast as different variations of schlubby tattooed men, Pete Davidson has finally landed the ultimate role: himself. Deadline reports that the SNL mainstay will play the lead in a forthcoming series inspired by his own life, tentatively titled Bupkis, with Lorne Michaels producing. Davidson will serve as co-executive producer of Bupkis, which is billed as “a mixture of grounded storytelling with absurd elements” in the vein of Larry David’s Curb Your Enthusiasm. The comedian is also co-writing the script, alongside frequent collaborator Dave Sirus as well as Judah Miller (Crashing). The series is currently being pitched to various streamers; Prime Video and Peacock are reportedly among those interested. Agents are also apparently seekin...

Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels has a fever, and the only prescription is more Will Ferrell. “I never rank,” Michaels began to The Hollywood Reporter, “but Will’s definitely in the top two or three that have ever done the show. There’s no question.” Ferrell worked with Michaels on SNL from 1995 to 2002. In explaining his non-ranking, Michaels didn’t cite Ferrell’s way with the cowbell, the manner in which he dissed his dog, or his impressions of iconic figures like Harry Caray or George W. Bush. Instead, he spoke about the first show after the September 11th attacks. “I’d made it clear that I was going to show up but that the cast should only do so if it wanted to — because I didn’t know what the risks were, and everybody, the whole city, was frightened,” Mic...
Jim Carrey will portray Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden in the upcoming 46th season of Saturday Night Live. The casting was revealed by longtime SNL boss Lorne Michaels in an interview with Vulture. Michaels also confirmed that Alec Baldwin and Maya Rudolph will be back as Donald Trump and Kamala Harris, respectively. Rudolph is up for an Emmy this year for her portrayal of the now-Democratic vice presidential nominee during the show’s 45th season. Baldwin won one for playing Trump in 2017. According to Michaels, it was actually Carrey who first broached the idea of playing Biden. “There was some interest on his part. And then we responded, obviously, positively,” Michaels said. “But it came down to discussions about what the take was. He and Colin Jost had a bunch...
