Lorde Announces Solar Power Album Tracklist, 2022 Tour

Welcome to the second day of summer. Yesterday on the summer solstice, Lorde released a 21-second teaser of what looks like her sitting in a relaxed lotus position meditating on the sand as the sound of shore break and a strange hiss is played. The camera zooms in, she opens her eyes, draws in a breath, and the clip ends. No music. Now, we have the news about the full album’s release. Titled Solar Power, Lorde’s third album is out on Aug. 20 on Republic. The album was produced by Jack Antonoff, which marks their second collaboration together, previously working on Melodrama. “The album is a celebration of the natural world, an attempt at immortalizing the deep, transcendent feelings I have when I’m outdoors. In times of heartache, grief, deep love, or confusion, I look to the nat...

Lorde and Marlon Williams Cover Bruce Springsteen’s ‘Tougher Than the Rest’

Concerts, remember those? In New Zealand, they’ve got the whole COVID thing figured out, meaning that concerts are back on like they were pre-March 2020. Now that we’ve got that out of the way, Marlon Williams has been on tour and for the final night of his four-night stint at Auckland’s Hollywood Theatre, he brought out none other than Lorde, who has been laying extremely low over the past few years. Together, they joined forces for a cover of Bruce Springsteen’s 1987 “Tougher Than the Rest,” one of the most underrated chestnuts from his catalog. The song was originally released on Tunnel of Love. Unlike the moody, midtempo rocker, the Lorde and Williams version is a tender piano ballad. This isn’t the first time Lorde has tipped her proverbial cap to the Boss. In 2017, she covered “...

Pearl Jam, R.E.M. and More Demand Clearance for Campaign Songs

Pearl Jam, R.E.M. Sia, Lorde and more have joined forces with the Artists Rights Alliance to demand that the political parties “establish clear policies requiring campaigns to seek the consent of featured recording artists, songwriters, and copyright owners before publicly using their music in a political or campaign setting,” the Artist Rights Alliance announce in a statement. The letter also points out “the fundamental right of music creators to decide who can use their music and on what terms.” And if they do not comply, the political parties risk legal action. The ARA furthered their point in the following statement: “We’ve seen so many artists and estates dragged into politics against their will and forced to take aggressive action to prohibit the use of their music – usually songs th...

Lorde Gives Fans an Update on New Music: ‘I Am Truly Jazzed for You to Hear It’

Lorde has kept quiet for the better part of..well, forever. That changed on Tuesday. In a newsletter sent to fans, Lorde opened with some pleasantries about quarantine life before getting to business. Working again with producer Jack Antonoff, Lorde outlined their process (going between Auckland and Los Angeles) and how losing her dog impacting the process. “It was summer, a time of year which is usually so clarifying and special to me, but I was grieving hard for Pearl, carrying it everywhere with me,” she wrote. “I found a note in my phone from November which said: I eat a grief sandwich / I wear a grief coat / I see a grief film.” But, it’s brought out some good songs apparently. “I started going back to the studio again in December, just for something to do, and to my surprise, good th...
