Goalkeeper closing in on new deal with Liverpool

Goalkeeper Adrian is close to agreeing to a new one-year deal with Liverpool, according to The Daily Mail. The 34-year-old joined the Reds from West Ham United in 2019 as cover to first-choice goalkeeper Alisson. The Spaniard has made just 24 appearances in all competitions over the past two seasons. He featured in Liverpool’s infamous 7-2 mauling against Aston Villa last year, and some fans have called for Caoimhin Kelleher to be the club’s new number two. The Republic of Ireland U-21 international has shown potential at the highest level but still needs to refine his game to challenge Alisson in the future. Since being integrated into the Reds first-team squad in 2019, Kelleher has only made nine senior appearances. It is believed that Liverpool may be open to sending Kelleher out on loa...

Has Gareth Southgate selected the right England squad?

England’s final 26-man squad for the European Championships was announced yesterday, sparking the usual carnage that we’ve come to expect from social media. The Three Lions haven’t even begun their warm-up games yet, and people have already declared the tournament as a write-off. “What’s the point? We’ll never win without <player who was left out of the squad> #SouthgateOut“, several furious fans Tweeted, with perhaps less clean language. Frankly, Southgate could have named any selection of players, and there still would have been outrage. Even if there were only 26 English professional footballers in the world, fans would have expressed their disgust over the omission of a 79-year-old Geoff Hurst or their mate from five-a-side. Complaining – it’s what the English do best. It’s natur...

Euro 2020: Gareth Southgate invites Bukayo Saka, 24 others

Gareth Southgate hit back at the critics after selecting Trent Alexander-Arnold for England’s Euro 2020 squad as the Three Lions boss admitted Harry Maguire is a doubt for the opener against Croatia. Alexander-Arnold had to endure a nervous wait before learning he had made the cut after spending much of the season out of favour with Southgate. The 22-year-old was left out of Southgate’s England squad for their World Cup qualifiers in March. But Alexander-Arnold’s strong end to the season with Liverpool convinced Southgate to restore the right-back to his squad. Alexander-Arnold responded to his selection by tweeting: “Always believe in yourself. Silence the doubters.” Irritated by the inaccurate pre-announcement reports that he would drop Alexander-Arnold, Southgate insisted he never lost ...

Gareth Southgate reveals final England squad for Euro 2020

Gareth Southgate has released his 26-man squad for this summer’s European Championships. The England boss initially named a provisional 33-man squad on May 25, with several players involved in major European finals or carrying injuries. He has now cut seven players from the provisional squad, leaving 26 who will play for the Three Lions at Euro 2020. Much of the debate over the squad has been surrounding Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold, who was excluded from the last squad in March. However, Southgate has recalled the youngster. It was confirmed earlier today that Mason Greenwood had pulled out of the squad due to an underlying injury concern. Now, it has been revealed that the other six omitted from the squad are Aaron Ramsdale, Ben White, Ben Godfrey, Jesse Lingard, James Ward-Prowse ...

Premier League Player of the Season nominees announced

The eight-man shortlist for the Premier League Player of the Season award has been announced. Manchester City are, rather unsurprisingly, the most represented team in the shortlist, boasting two nominees. One player from rivals Manchester United features, as well as one each from Liverpool, Chelsea, West Ham United, Tottenham Hotspur, and Aston Villa. Three Englishmen have been selected in the final eight, as well as two from Portugal. The fan vote is open on the Premier League’s website, with the announcement expected to be in about a week’s time. It is worth noting that this is NOT the PFA Player of the Year award. However, seven of the last eight winners have scooped both prizes. Kevin De Bruyne – Manchester City De Bruyne won the award last season Hoping to become the fourth playe...

PSG president: Super League didn’t have the interests of football at heart

Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi says the Super League project was not in football’s best interests, insisting the Champions League must be protected. PSG were not among the 12 founding members of the competition, which pledged to break away from UEFA and compete with or replace the Champions League. The plan collapsed within days of its announcement, as football’s governing bodies and fan protests convinced nine clubs to pull out and Al-Khelaifi believes football is better off without the controversial idea. “Football has been around for years and years. The Super League did not have at heart to defend the interests of football,” he told AFP. “You can envisage changes but not break the tradition that every club can hope to achieve their dreams. “All teams must have the opp...

NUFC reportedly want ‘brilliant & extremely smart’ Liverpool centre-back available for bargain fee

Newcastle United are looking to bolster their centre-back options this summer and are eyeing a move for Liverpool centre-back Nat Phillips, according to The Sun. With Ibrahima Konate joining the Reds and Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip all set to return to full fitness ahead of the new campaign, the 24-year-old would most likely spend a larger chunk of next season on the bench if he remains at Anfield going forward. Liverpool are ready to sell Phillips if they get a major offer for him this summer, and it is believed around £10 million could be enough to land him. The defender featured in 17 Premier League games and three Champions League games in 2020-21, and it appears he has managed to convince Newcastle of his quality. Burnley are also interested in snapping up the former Bol...

SL View: Why Liverpool’s transfer strategy is better than Man Utd’s

Liverpool are expected to use the summer transfer window to good effect following a disappointing campaign.  The Reds struggled badly last season with the squad being badly ravaged by injuries. In the end, they did manage to secure the third spot in the league, but it took them the final day to seal their fate. While Jurgen Klopp reportedly happy with the players he has got at his disposal, he is likely to make necessary changes to the squad ahead of the next season. In the previous few transfer windows, Liverpool hardly made enough signings, with Klopp relying mainly on his core group of players. It has been frustrating at times, with Klopp not being provided with a healthy transfer kitty to operate in the market. He had to resort to late signings in January when the damage was alrea...

Barcelona confident of securing Premier League duo within the next week

Barcelona are confident of securing Premier League duo Sergio Aguero and Gerginio Wijnaldum on free transfers within the next week, Sky Sports reports. Representatives of both players have been at the Nou Camp over the last few days to discuss the final terms of their proposed contracts. Finalising a deal for Aguero should develop more rapidly, with the striker’s final game for Manchester City coming in the Champions League final against Chelsea on Saturday. Long-term Barcelona target Wijnaldum said his goodbyes to his Liverpool teammates after the Reds’ final league game of the season last weekend. The Catalan giants have been crippled by the financial implications of the coronavirus pandemic, with debts reaching more than £1 billion, and they have been targeting players approaching ...

Liverpool confirm agreement to sign player with ‘massive potential’

Liverpool have confirmed on their official website that an agreement has been reached with RB Leipzig to sign centre-back Ibrahima Konate. According to Sky Sports, Liverpool have triggered the Frenchman’s £36 million release clause to secure his services. Konate made 95 appearances for Leipzig after joining them from Sochaux. He scored four goals during his time at the club. This season, the 22-year-old featured in 21 matches across all competitions, finding the net in a league fixture against Freiburg in November. His performances were enough to earn him a place in the France U21 squad for this summer’s European Championship tournament in Hungary and Slovenia. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp says he is delighted to have persuaded Konate to move to the Premier League. “In Ibrahima, we are s...

Report: £20m star among nine players who could leave Liverpool this summer

Liverpool completed their first signing of the summer today after the club confirmed the arrival of Ibrahima Konate from RB Leipzig. Bolstering the defence was a priority for Jurgen Klopp, and the Reds wasted no time in securing the signature of arguably one of the best young talents in world football. The Reds are planning to offload some of their fringe players this summer, with as many as nine players likely to depart. According to reports from The Athletic, Liverpool could offload Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri. Origi, who has etched his name among Liverpool’s cult heroes, struggled for regular games last season. The Belgian international needs to pursue a new challenge, and a move away from Anfield looks likely. He is valued at around £20 million. Likewise, Shaqiri played a bit...
