Source: wundervisuals / Getty In the midst of constructing the second part of our Top Hip-Hop Projects of 2020 post, we were all stunned by the news that Daniel “MF DOOM” Dumile passed away this past Halloween. With the heaviness weighing deep in our hearts, we powered through this list knowing that we as an outlet need to celebrate our favorite artists while they’re still here with us. Peppered across Pt. 2, mainstream figures like Lil Baby and Polo G are listed alongside underground legends like Roc Marciano and Ka. Young masters in the making such as MIKE and Navy Blue are also present, sharing space with solidified and active OGs such as Nas and Curren$y among others. As we said in our previous post, the pressure of getting this list right was higher than usual in a year that saw the p...
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), on Sunday, maintained that Nigerians have become fed up with the Muhammadu Buhari administration and are now rallying under the main opposition party. In a statement issued in Abuja by its national spokesman, Kola Ologbondiyan, the PDP described the recent attack on it by presidential spokesman, Garba Shehu, “as a feeble kick of a weak horse, in another failed attempt to beguile Nigerians.” Recall that the presidential spokesman had described the PDP as “a university of lies.” The PDP said it is not surprised that “the Buhari Presidency is rattled by the bitter truth that Nigerians are fed up with President Muhammadu Buhari as well as his All Progressives Congress (APC) and are rallying on our platform to rescue our nation from misrule.” The party noted:...

A Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chieftain has declared that elder statesman, Chieftain Edwin Kiagbodo Clark, remains the leader of the Party in the local government area and the ward despite not being a registered member of the Party. Mr. Akpodikumo Oweiagbe Okosuye, the Chairman of the PDP of Ward 8 (Kiagbodo), Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, made this declaration when he condemned a recent protest by Messer Paul Oruma and Godwin Gbogiemi over the outcome of the peaceful councillorship primary election which made Clement Wagha and Mrs. Gift Gomeron councillorship candidates for DSIEC Ward 13 and 14 of Burutu Local Government Area respectively. In a statement signed by the Ngbilebiri II, Ward 8, (Kiagbodo) Chairman, Mr. Akpodikumo Oweiagbe Okosuye, refuted claims by Barrister...
While the rock world will never forget the legendary Lemmy Kilmister, late December is an especially poignant time to commemorate his legacy. This year, December 24th marks what would have been the late Motörhead frontman’s 75th birthday, while December 28th marks five years since the passing of one of rock’s all-time great icons. Few rockers were as instantly memorable and recognizable as Lemmy. Whether it be his lifestyle (pushing life to the max via his party-hearty ways), his looks (long hair, facial hair, and signature facial moles), or his music (penning dozens of headbanging classics that have influenced countless other artists, and have only improved with age), there will never be another gentleman like Ian Fraser Kilmister. So, what better way to celebrate the life of the late, gr...
Christmas trees and glittery ornaments are for sale at a Saudi gift shop, a once unthinkable sight in the cradle of Islam where all public non-Muslim worship is banned. In recent years, festive sales have gradually crept into the capital Riyadh, a sign of loosening social restrictions after Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman pledged to steer the conservative Gulf kingdom towards an “open, moderate Islam”. “I didn’t ever imagine I’d see this” in Saudi Arabia, a Riyadh resident told AFP at the shop selling trees, Santa Claus outfits as well as tinsel, baubles and other ornaments. “I am surprised,” said the resident, declining to be identified. Until barely three years ago, it was almost impossible to sell such items openly in Saudi Arabia, but authorities have been clipping the powers of the c...
Thousands of Sudanese protesters took to the streets of the capital Khartoum and its twin city Omdurman on Saturday, demanding an acceleration of reforms on the second anniversary of the start of an uprising that ousted Omar al-Bashir. The veteran leader was deposed by the military in April 2019 after months of mass protests against poor economic conditions and Bashir’s autocratic, three-decade rule. Many Sudanese are unhappy with what they see as the slow or even negligible pace of change under the transitional government that has struggled to fix an economy in crisis. The government was formed under a three-year power sharing agreement between the military and civilian groups which is meant to lead to fair presidential and parliamentary elections. Sudan’s state TV aired footage of thousa...
10. Brandy, B7 Eight years since her last release and three years in the making, Brandy Norwood’s B7 arrived at the end of July like a salve, with warm production and messages of self-love. Her seventh studio album goes to unexpected places, diving headfirst into loneliness, depression and anxiety, while deep bass and watery synthesizers — and sometimes actual water sounds, like on “Lucid Dreams” — offer her depths to explore. “I’m the most jealous girl in the whole wide world,” she confesses on album standout “Borderline,” her voice dancing atop a ticking hi-hat. Her instrument is still as strong and smoky as it ever was, only now it’s lower and more lived-in. “One day I woke up/ And now my love is unstuck,” she sings on the closing piano ballad, “Bye BiPolar.” “I can see...
10. Gabby Barrett, “I Hope” Barrett’s multi-format smash starts innocently enough, as she tenderly wishes her ex-boyfriend well with his new love. But just as soon as she’s lulled the listener into thinking she’s moved on, she delivers the stinging zinger: “I hope she’s wilder than your wildest dreams/ She’s everything you’re ever gonna need/ And then I hope she cheats,” she sings as the song twists from sweet to sinister. Barrett’s supple vocals wring every bit of nuance out of the tune that serves as a PG-rated revenge fantasy. 9. Kalie Shorr, “My Voice” Though only in her mid-20s, Shorr has been a force in Nashville for a few years, advocating for women and independent artists. On this twangy tune, she takes mainstream country radio to task for not playing more women —...
Few of the shoegaze revivalists of recent years carry the instrumental brawn of Philly-based Reprise Records quartet Nothing, whose crushing gauzefests owe as much to cloud-pop industrialists HEALTH and alt-metal deep divers the Deftones as to Slowdive and My Bloody Valentine. “Say Less” is maybe their most propulsive single to date, particularly as they take the track’s advice on the late song’s instrumental break, for what might qualify as the first true beat drop in dream-pop history. — A.U. 22. Porridge Radio, “7 Seconds” This banger sounds like CRISPR technology was used to splice together DNA from Gang of Four and The Go-Gos to create a song as dark as it is danceable. Frontwoman Dana Margolin has said “7 Seconds” is about “the end of so...
