Moses Simon has earned his first selection this season in the French Ligue 1 Team of Week by L’Equipe after a superlative showing for FC Nantes. At the weekend, the Super Eagles winger scored a goal and provided an assist for Nantes to win 4-1 at Brest and boost their hopes of escaping relegation. He has now scored six goals in a very troubled campaign for ‘The Canaries’ during which they sacked two coaches. Nantes will be hoping for more from their Nigeria star to stay up with three rounds of matches to the end of the season. Manchester City defeated Paris Saint-Germain at the Parc des Princes in the first leg of their Champions League semi-final tie. PSG applied all of the early pressure, and got their reward in the 15th minute. Angel Di Maria’s excellent corner was glanced home by Marquinhos, scoring a semi-final goal for the second year running. Les Parisiens continued to control the game, and twice came close to extending their lead. Neymar had a deflected effort turned over the bar, and Leandro Paredes headed wide from a set piece when perhaps he should have hit the target. Man City did have a couple of chances of their own, first coming close through Bernardo Silva. He had to stretch to reach a long pass by compatriot Joao Cancelo, but managed to divert his effort on target. Keylor Navas turned it wide fo...
West Ham United are looking to sign French goalkeeper Alphonse Areola, according to a report by the Express. Areola came through the youth ranks at Paris Saint-Germain and has since made over 100 appearances for the Ligue 1 giants. He has had several loan spells, including one at Real Madrid during their title-winning season of 2019/20. Areola was part of France’s World Cup-winning squad His displays over the last nine years have earned him three caps for the France national team, serving as Hugo Lloris’ understudy during their triumphant 2018 World Cup campaign. This year, he has been the number one choice at relegation strugglers Fulham. Despite their league position, the Frenchman has impressed between the sticks, keeping ten clean sheets. The Express claims that West Ham will make a mo...
As the 2020/21 Ligue 1 campaign enters its final five games of the season, the supposed ‘farmers league’ has a breathtaking title race on its hands. Three points separate current leaders Lille’s 70, from fourth-placed Lyon on 67. Paris Saint-Germain are second on 69, with Monaco third with 68. This is only the eighth time in Ligue 1 history that less than 10 points separate the top four with five games to go, and this season is sure to have a few more twists in the tale before the campaign draws to a close. Can Lille’s knack for last-gasp goals keep them on track? Will Monaco’s stunning 2021 form continue? Will the typically dominant PSG prevail? Or will Lyon secure their first title in over a decade? Sportslens takes a look at the title hopefuls’ run-ins, assessing where the opportunities...
Paris Saint-Germain president Nasser Al-Khelaifi has been appointed as the new European Club Association chairman, replacing Andrea Agnelli in the wake of the Juventus executive’s departure. Agnelli stepped down from the ECA in response to the formation of the Super League, assuming the role of the new competition’s chairman. Although the Super League is not set to go ahead, Al-Khelaifi has been named as Agnelli’s replacement after his club resisted an invite to join the new competition. “I am honoured and humbled to have been appointed by my fellow ECA Executive Board Members as Chairman,” he said in a statement. “The leadership, integrity and togetherness of our organisation has never been more required than at this pivotal moment in European football. “I will provide my unconditional co...
It was a great weekend for PSG in Ligue 1; seeing Lille draw on Friday night, they managed to cut the gap on the league leaders to just one point. Lille could only muster up a 1-1 draw against Montpellier on Friday night and so put the chance into the hands of PSG to try and cut the gap at the top of the Ligue 1 table. It was touch and go in the game though and PSG nearly fell short and came close to getting only one point, but determination shone through and they managed to come through the game by just about beating St Etienne 3-2 thanks to a Mauro Icardi 95th minute winner. They fell behind to a Denis Bouanga 78th minute strike, but it took them only one minute to equalise through Kylian Mbappe, and he got his second eight minutes later via a penalty to put his team 2-1 up in the game. ...
Everton striker Moise Kean has been in fine form since joining Paris Saint-Germain on a season-long last summer, and he is not short of suitors ahead of the summer transfer window. The French giants are keen on signing him permanently after he bagged 16 goals in 32 games across all competitions since arriving, while Juventus are looking to bringing him back. Kean joined Everton from the Serie A giants in the summer of 2019 on a five-year deal for an initial £25.1 million, but he struggled to make an impact. The 21-year-old played 37 times for the Toffees, starting nine times and scoring four goals before his temporary exit at the beginning of 2020-21. Kean’s form since then has attracted plenty of suitors, with Inter Milan also keen. Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti insists that the Italy i...
Paris Saint-Germain have progressed to the Champions League semi-finals for the second year in a row after beating holders Bayern Munich on away goals. The Bundesliga giants went into the second leg at the Parc des Princes needing to score at least two goals, having lost the home fixture 3-2. Both sides had chances in the opening stages. Neymar was denied three times by goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, while Leroy Sane and Joshua Kimmich both fired wide from outside the box down the other end. Neymar, who put in a stellar performance last time out, was looking lively once again, and twice came within inches of putting PSG in front. On the first instance, he pulled out a beautiful piece of skill to beat Kingsley Coman, then curled a fantastic effort onto the crossbar. The second occasion, however, ...
According to ESPN, Real Madrid, Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan have joined West Ham United in the race for Jesse Lingard’s signature ahead of the summer transfer window. The England international joined the Hammers on loan until the rest of the season from Manchester United in January.
