LCD Soundsystem Drops First Song in Five Years, Confirms NYC Residency

LCD Soundsystem‘s first new music in five years has arrived in the form of “new body rhumba,” the group’s previously announced contribution to the Noah Baumbach film adaptation of Don DeLillo’s classic 1985 novel White Noise. The seven-minute plus track was written by group leader James Murphy in tandem with Pat Mahoney and Nancy Whang and produced by Murphy. On it, Murphy vents about the aging process (and at one point mockingly asks, “would you like to add a protein?”) as LCD works its way around a sinister dance groove in the vein of its 2005 classic “Daft Punk Is Playing at My House.” [embedded content][embedded content] Directed by Baumbach and scored by Danny Elfman, White Noise stars Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig and Don Cheadle. After a recent premiere at the Venice Film Festival, it w...

Showtime Acquires Doc Based on Rock Book ‘Meet Me in the Bathroom’

Former SPIN intern Lizzy Goodman’s 2017 chronicle of the 2000s-era New York rock scene, Meet Me in the Bathroom, is headed to Showtime in the form of a Pulse Films documentary directed by Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern. The long-in-the-works film debuted earlier this year at Sundance; Showtime will air it before the end of the year, while Utopia will distribute it to theaters. Meet Me in the Bathroom detailed the rock resurgence in New York over the first decade of the new millennium through oral history-style, firsthand accounts from The Strokes, James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, Interpol, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Ryan Adams, among others. The book was hailed not only for documenting personal, often salacious details about the artists’ interpersonal relationships, but examining the effect of ...

Original LCD Soundsystem Lineup Reunites For DFA Records 20th Anniversary Party

The original LCD Soundsystem lineup reunited on Saturday night to play a short set at a special DFA Records event. As announced last month, James Murphy and company hosted a party in New York to celebrate the label’s 20th anniversary. “Anniversaries, schmaniversaries, but given everything we’ve all collectively been through, this feels like a plausible excuse to throw a party. So that’s what we’re doing,” DFA said in a statement. Murphy, alongside current members Nancy Whang and Pat Mahoney and past members Tyler Pope and Phil Mossman, treated guests to a two-song set. They dusted off 2005’s “Give It Up” for its first live performance in 15 years, and also played a rendition of Harry Nilsson’s ‘Jump Into The Fire’, which they last performed during their farewell show at Madison Square Gard...

[embedded content][embedded content] [embedded content][embedded content] This was SNL’s first episode in nearly a month. Katy Perry was the last musical guest and made her performance one to remember. Måneskin made an electric debut in January and Bleachers ensuring their first time on the show was a memorable one by bringing out some special guests, including Jack Antonoff’s dad during “How Dare You Want More.” LCD Soundsystem’s performance follows a New York residency that was cut short in December due to Omicron’s surge...

Eric Wareheim on How the New LCD Soundsystem Holiday Special Came Together

A little over a week ago, LCD Soundsystem announced they’d be the subject of a new holiday special. Not just that, but it was to be released on December 22. The project is shepherded by Eric Wareheim, who is playing LCD frontman James Murphy and directing. The cast features a murderer’s row of who’s who, with Macaulay Culkin, Christine Ko, and Aparna Nancherla as the band. As for the special itself (titled All My Friends after the LCD song), it’s a ’90s-styled sitcom, which, if you grew up in the era of TGIF, teeters between the fun and the corny. According to Wareheim, that was the intent. Backing up for a second, All My Friends came together at a lightning speed that’s pretty uncommon for Hollywood productions. “James [Murphy] gave me a call less than a month ago, he had this idea to do ...

LCD Soundsystem to Feature in Holiday Special With Macaulay Culkin, Eric Wareheim

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, right? You know what that also means? Holiday specials! LCD Soundsystem is getting on the act, featuring in an upcoming special titled The LCD Soundsystem Holiday Special. Before that, however, will air a ’90s-inspired sitcom episode, called All My Friends (after the 2007 LCD song). That pre-show special will feature Macaulay Culkin, Christine Ko, and Aparna Nancherla as the band, with Eric Wareheim directing. “I’ve already conquered film, James has conquered music, but we have yet to conquer the sitcom—the HIGHEST form of art,” Wareheim said in a statement. “We’ve been working on this project for 15 years, and for this show, we’re unveiling a uniquely emotional perspective of the sitcom universe for the holidays—provided by one of the greatest ban...

Mindchatter Pays Homage to LCD Soundsystem with Dreamy “I Can Change” Cover

Grammy-winning electro-rock outfit LCD Soundsystem have been a monumental influence for many producers and musicians since the mid 2000s, when “Daft Punk Is Playing At My House” dominated electronic charts around the world. Budding producer and vocalist Mindchatter certainly holds LCD Soundsystem in high regard, so to celebrate the ten-year anniversary of their This Is Happening LP, he has put forth a nostalgic cover of “I Can Change.” Mindchatter’s cover puts a deeper and more atmospheric touch on the original, retaining the catchy synth lines and lyrics, with the producer’s own airy vocal work providing a fitting 2020 update to the track. Retro drum lines pay homage to LCD Soundsystem’s original work, yet give the cover a very fres...
