It previously topped out at No. 8 on the Dec. 5, 2020-dated chart, the week following its debut at No. 21 (from two days of tracking activity in the week ending Nov. 19). As Sin Miedo rises to the top of Latin Pop Albums, Uchis becomes the first female solo act to rule with her first Latin Pop Albums entry since Rosalía’s El Mal Querer in November 2018. Sin Miedo traces its surge to “Telepatía’s” streaming gain across services like YouTube, Spotify and Apple Music, sparked by its popularity on TikTok. (TikTok itself...

The Colombian star took to the boxing ring, alongside pal and boxer Canelo Alvarez, to perform the new “Ma’ G” for the first time prior to the Canelo/Avni Yildrim fight at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Saturday night (Feb. 27). The official music video for “Ma’ G” was filmed in Balvin’s hometown of Medellín, and the song marks a return to Balvin’s rap roots. In May, Romero and his band, Orishas, released “Amame Como Soy” (Love Me As I Am), a rework of “Amame Como Soy,” the now-classic track by Cuban troubadour Pablo Milanés. The new version quotes the Milanés chorus, but the verses — accompanied by black-and-white footage and pictures of Cuba and imagery that alludes to repression — are harshly critical of the Cuban government. The song caused a stir on the Caribbean island. But that’s been nothing compared to Romero’s new single “Patria y Vida,” which he performs with fellow Black Cuban musicians Descemer Bueno, Gente de Zona, Maykel Osorbo and El Funky. With a title that translates to “Country and Life,” a direct rebuke to Cuba’s official slogan –Country or Death — the song and video released Feb. 16 have unleashed a ...

One of my favorite tracks is “Cambia!,” featuring two up-and-coming regional Mexican stars: Adriel Favela and Carin León. I discovered Adriel Favela with his [2018 song] “La Escuela No Me Gustó,” which introduced me to corridos. I have many Mexican friends and they told me about the new trend with young acts doing more urban corrido. And during a trip to Mexico, I heard Carín León on the radio, and his melodies reminded me of ’90s Spanish pop act Andy y Lucas. Then, one night in Madrid, we began writing a corrido, I sent the demo to Adriel on my phone, and he heard it while he was on the touring bus with his musicians. Half-hour later, he sent me a video of all of them singing and playing the song. When I saw that reaction, I made the move to call Carin and also ask him to be o...
