Old Danzon Gets Cool Makeover With Latin Grammy-Nominated Orquesta Failde

Failde spoke to Billboard from his home in Matanzas, Cuba. Your great-great-uncle, Miguel Failde, is credited with having created the danzón rhythm. Was that legacy always present in your life? I started dancing the danzón when I was six years old, thanks to a teacher I had at school. But I am the only musician in my immediate family, and I really just found out the whole story of the Failde family a few years ago. In the past, artists were often looked down upon, and music was seen as a hobby. My grandfather Candido, for example, was a great violinist, but all I knew about him was that he was a tailor by profession. When I started studying music, I got to the conservatory and realized I was “a Failde,” that my name was the same as that great Cuban musician. It ignited a passion in me for ...

We had two where the nominations were presented; we had one for the show host; and then we had fou...

‘We Made a Statement’: J Balvin on Making History at a Reggaeton-Heavy Latin Grammys (Exclusive)

The reggaeton-heavy nominations come a year after a wave of urbano artists expressed their concerns with the Latin Recording Academy for the lack of urban recognition in the main categories. Balvin, alongside other colleagues, was one of the leading force of the “Without Reggaeton there’s no Latin Grammys” campaign on social media. Their protest, as he simply stated, is “for the culture and the movement.” “It would be nice to be the big winner of the night but we already made a statement and that’s the most important thing,” he says. “This is for the youth, for the dreamers, for the reggaeton genre and the different ramifications of urban music.” Nominated twice in multiple categories, including the coveted record of the year, album of the year, and the newly-added best r...
