SA Competition Commission Approves Afrihost, Cool Ideas Merger

Image sourced from DT Architecture. South Africa’s Competition Commission, the country’s business practice watchdog, has unconditionally approved the merger of ISPs: Afrihost, and Cool Ideas. In June, Afrihost and Cool Ideas said they had concluded a deal in which Afrihost would purchase a majority stake in Cool Ideas. However, the new deal does not see Afrihost absorb Cool Ideas, instead, the companies plan to hold separate brands going into the merger. Cool Ideas is also reported to keep the same management and employees for the immediate future. “The Commission found that the proposed transaction is unlikely to result in a substantial prevention or lessening of competition in any relevant markets. The Commission further found that the proposed transaction does not raise any public inter...

Take Steps Now to Protect Your Organisation as Ransomware-as-a-Service Ramps Up DDoS Attack Offerings

Image sourced from Ben Kerckx, Pixabay. The services industry has traditionally included sectors ranging from social assistance and health care to transportation and scientific services. However, it doesn’t end there, because the human talent for innovation can turn almost anything into a service. We also find – rather less top-of-mind for most people – the offer of hitmen-as-a-service, usually associated, at least in Hollywood, with large and well-muscled men in expensive suits and sunglasses. A few years ago, this area of business moved into the cyber arena as well. And so we present: ransomware-as-a-service. Today, one of its latest offerings is a ‘triple threat’ that turns Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks into an even more lethal cyber weapon against organisations. Carole H...

4 Fastest Mobile Internet Operators in Kenya Ranked

Internet and connectivity speed tester Ookla last month released its market analysis for Kenya, ranking the country’s fastest mobile internet operators. The analysis only takes into account top mobile operators in the country, ones which account for 3% or more of total test samples in the market in Q2 2021 – smaller providers are not tested, and thus are not included in the rankings. All operators are ranked based on their Speed Score, which incorporates a measure of each provider’s download and upload speed to rank network performance (90% of the final Speed Score is attributed to download speed and the remaining 10% to upload speed because online experiences are typically more affected by download speed). Ookla places the most emphasis on the median speeds as those represent what most mo...
