Defilement: Appeal Court affirms ex-Chrisland supervisor’s 60 years’ imprisonment

The Lagos Division of the Court of Appeal yesterday affirmed the 60-year jail term imposed on a former Supervisor at Chrisland School, Mr. Adegboyega Adenekan, who was convicted of defiling a female pupil of the school, aged two years. Adenekan was convicted of the offence on October 24, 2019, by Justice Sybil Nwaka of the Lagos State Special Offences Court in Ikeja. Displeased with Justice Nwaka’s verdict, Adenekan had through his lawyer, Mr Olatunde Adejuyigbe (SAN), approached the Court of Appeal, seeking to overturn it. But a three-man appeal court panel, headed by Justice Mohammed Garba, dismissed the appeal for lacking in merit. The appellate court affirmed the 60-year jail term imposed on him by the high court. Getty Images Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Frederic Oladeinde, has said the true test of road user compliance with the partial closure of the Third Mainland Bridge would be accessed on Monday. Oladeinde made this disclosure Saturday in a chat with newsmen while he monitored traffic situation on the bridge. The bridge partial closure of the bridge started on Friday, July 24, 2020 and it is expected to last six months – until Sunday, July 24, 2021. Getty Images The Federal Government, on Saturday, partially closed the Third Mainland Bridge, Nigeria’s busiest bridge, for rehabilitation works after site inspections for traffic architecture assessments. The work began at midnight on July 24 as workmen use crash barriers to barricade the outbound mainland traffic on Adeniji Adele junction. They went on to line more barriers and signage on various other sections blocking off a section of the Oworonshoki bound carriageway. Supervising the closure, the Federal Controller of Works in Lagos, Mr. Olukayode Popoola, said that the traffic management and diversion architecture had been perfected at an earlier stakeholder meeting on Friday. Coronavirus may reach peak in Lagos by August – commissioner

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Akin Abayomi, said on Thursday that the state may experience the peak of coronavirus by August. Speaking at a press briefing on Thursday, Abayomi said that the COVID-19 prediction model of the state holds that the pandemic will soon reach its peak, followed by the flattening of the curve and a gradual decline in the number of cases. “We believe that in the next week or two, we are going to see an increase in both the private sector testing and public laboratory testing. “We are still seeing a gentle increase in the number of cases overtime cumulatively. Lagos will theoretically peak in the month of August, it will flatten out and over some time, we will see a decline,” Abayomi said.
