Sunday night was big for music as the American Music Awards saw some of the industry’s most presitgious names recognized. If you missed the broadcast, you may be surprised to hear who took home the honors for dance music’s favorite artist. Lady Gaga bested both Kygo and Marshmello for the award in what was—by all accounts—a competitive category. Gaga released her sixth studio album Chromatica this year, a record that embodied an expansive palette of electronic music styles and featured a formidable array of dance music producers in its illustrious credits. The combined talents of Tchami, BURNS, BloodPop®, and Boys Noize could not be denied as the album’s second single, the filter house-styled “Rain On Me,” rocketed to the top of the Billboard ...
As part of our 35th-anniversary, we’re naming the most influential artists of the past 35 years. Today, we’re at #28. From New York, New York here is Lady Gaga. CREDIT: Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic Lady Gaga could have been just another pop star. But she’s also become a boundary-pushing icon, an advocate using her platform for social justice, LGBTQ+ rights and sexual assault survivors. Like Madonna, Cher and other legends before her, Gaga has become a master at reinvention — from the ‘80s-saturated Born This Way era, filled with leather jackets and big hair, to the nu-country phase of Joanne, with her millennial pink cowboy gear. And her latest work was no different: 2020’s Chormatica brought introspection to the bombastic dance-pop songs that helped cultivate her fanbase. No one can ever s...
Two of the late Eddie Van Halen’s iconic guitars — his custom-designed, red-and-white-striped, stage-used 2004 EVH Charvel Art Series, and a black-and-white striped Fender Stratocaster-style headstock numbered on the back #54 — are going on the auction block. Each guitar is estimated to sell between $40,000 – $80,000 at the Icons & Idols Trilogy: Rock ‘N’ Roll annual music auction on Dec. 4 and 5, live at Julien’s Auctions in Beverly Hills and online here. The event will span over 700 historic artifacts of every genre, including items from the Beatles, Johnny Cash, Jim Morrison, the Rolling Stones, Queen, Guns N’ Roses, Little Richard, Cher, and many more. In 1991, the Charvel Art Series guitar with the red body, below, was gifted to Van Halen’s friend Bryan Cash, the o...
Lady Gaga is one of the biggest pop stars in the world, and she hates it. During a recent interview with CBS News, the singer opened up about mental health and struggles with fame, admitting that her alter ego was her worst enemy before she released Chromatica in June. “I just totally gave up on myself,” she said of that particular time. “I hated being famous. I hated being a star. I felt exhausted and used up.” Pointing at a piano behind her in the studio, Gaga continued: “I went from looking at this piano, and thinking, You ruined my life. During that time, I was like, ‘You made me Lady Gaga. My biggest enemy is Lady Gaga.’ That’s what I was thinking: ‘My biggest enemy is her. What did you do?’” She went on to describe experiencing “full body pain” during encoun...
As the mythos of Chromatica continues to grow, Lady Gaga has unveiled an eye-popping short film for one of the chart-topping album’s standout singles, the Madeon-produced “911.” Directed by award-winning director Tarsem, the video is nothing short of a tour de force from the pop superstar, and an empathic reminder of her status as a triple threat actress, dancer, and singer. The acting prowess of Gaga, who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actress in 2019 for A Star Is Born, must not be forgotten. She pulls off the “911” short film with the gravitas of a seasoned vet, delivering a magnetic and spine-chilling performance. Flaunting a number of quirky, technicolor outfits that have become a signature component of her visuals, she r...
Lady Gaga’s Chromatica was released back in June. Since then, the album has been mostly applauded and she took home several VMAs last month. Today, Gaga unveiled a short film (or video) for “911” from that album. The clip begins with the singer stuck in the middle of the desert, blindfolded and surrounded by fruit. She follows a guy on horseback to a house that suddenly appears…and things go from there. As you’d expect from a Gaga video, there’s a lot going on, and it’s quite dramatic. The film was directed by award-winning director Tarsem and produced by The Artists Company. Some of the song’s lyrics address dealing with mental health issues, and include “Doctor’s on the other line / ‘Cause he’s not coming home tonight / And I just took my very last pill / Need somethi...
Dance music fans were excited to see that Lady Gaga was one of the featured performers at the 2020 MTV VMAs. During her headline performance, she delivered a mash-up of hits from her latest album Chromatica, complete with multiple costume changes, a special guest, festival-grade production, and intricate choreographed dance routines. Starting off with “Enigma” and “Chromatica II,” the pop superstar introduced viewers to the dystopian world she created with her record-breaking sixth studio album. She would then go on to perform a routine soundtracked by her Madeon-produced tune “911.” The French electronic producer took to Twitter and shared how he enjoyed playing a role in the show. Not long after, she transitioned to the album’s lead single &...
Meteorologists may have predicted a mostly sunny Sunday in New York City, but nobody could’ve prepared them for the storm that was coming. To win over Sunday’s MTV Video Music Awards, Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande made an absolute splash with their debut performance of the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 hit and seven-time VMA-nominated single “Rain on Me” during Gaga’s high-energy Chromatica medley performance. During one of the first socially-distanced award shows of its kind, the two pop powerhouses joined other performers in trying to figure out how exactly they’d win over audiences worldwide while still being conscious of the pandemic. And the pair did just that… in masks. Gaga started the medley with some killer group choreo and “911” before Grande appeared from the Chromatica backdrop. The tw...
Honey Dijon dropped a statement-making remix of Lady Gaga‘s “Free Woman” this week and sat down with Zane Lowe to discuss how it all went down in an illuminating, wide-ranging interview. The Chicago-born house DJ and producer released her remix of Lady Gaga’s “Free Woman,” a cut from the latter’s Chromatica album, playing up the song’s natural club elements, adding a thumping foundational kick and layering in supportive rhythmic instrumentation. While the remix choice feels like a natural fit, the story of how the project ultimately came to fruition was somewhat circuitous. Honey Dijon told Lowe she was originally offered the opportunity to remix Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande‘s “Rain On Me.” Ultimately, she did not f...
As her momentous Chromatica LP continues to shatter streaming records, Lady Gaga has continued to tip her cap to electronic dance music via “GAGA RADIO.” Every Friday, she has been using her Apple Music radio show to pay homage to the genre by chatting with the DJs and producers who breathed life into her sensational sixth studio album. In the forthcoming final episode of “GAGA RADIO,” Mother Monster talks to house music maven and Chromatica collaborator Tchami, who produced four tracks on the record: “Stupid Love,” “1000 Doves,” “Babylon,” and the Ariana Grande-assisted “Rain On Me.” In the interview, Tchami says that “1000 Doves” is “the one that wins [his] heart,” rhapsodi...
This year may be a disaster for the music biz, but that doesn’t (obviously) mean that 2019 wasn’t. Last year, a number of artists made a shit-ton of money on the strength of touring. Billboard shared its ranking of last year’s highest-paid musicians, and the Rolling Stones top the list. The band made $65 million last year, including $60.5 million in touring. Ariana Grande was in second with $44.3 million, with $33.7 million from touring. The top five is rounded out by Elton John ($43.3 million overall), the Jonas Brothers ($40.9 million) and Queen ($35.2 million). Other names on the list include Paul McCartney, Lady Gaga, Post Malone, Kiss, Justin Timberlake, Lady Gaga, Backstreet Boys, BTS, Khalid, John Mayer, Fleetwood Mac, Cher, Metallica, Aerosmith and Billie Eilish.
