The Best Rock Albums of 2022 (So Far)

Compared to the last couple of years, 2022 has been a bonanza of incredible rock record releases. It seems like every week there are two or three projects just begging for proper time and attention. Many artists who were kept off the road due to the pandemic and were inspired to write during their forced, sabbatical and have returned with fresh perspectives and new sounds. Then there were those who held back some of their best material to wait and see how the state of the world shook out. However they got to 2022, and it’s a joy to finally begin to hear these legitimately righteous records. It’s probably a little too soon for me to declare an absolute favorite album out of the bunch we’ve gotten so far. It’s been such an eclectic year for rock albums, with artists of every stripe truly del...

Kurt Vile Goes Into the Woods in ‘Mount Airy Hill (Way Gone)’ Video

Kurt Vile went into the woods, literally, in the video for his latest single, “Mount Airy Hill (Way Gone).” The clip sees Vile glide on a skateboard and yes, wander around the woods showcasing his sense of humor. [embedded content][embedded content] The song hails from (watch my moves), his first album on Verve, that’s out next month. It is his first album on the label after leaving Matador. “Mount Airy Hill (Way Gone)” is the latest song to be released from the album, joining “Like Exploding Stones” and “Hey Like A Child.” The song is named after the Philadelphia-area suburb where he lives and clocks in at just over six minutes. The album was recorded at Vile’s new home studio, OKV Central in Mount Airy (see the connection?). (watch my moves) was self-produced with an assist from Vile’s p...

Kurt Vile Announces (watch my moves) With New Single ‘Like Exploding Stones’

Kurt Vile will release a new album (watch my moves) on April 15 via Verve Records. In support of the new album, Vile has released the first single “Like Exploding Stones” along with an accompanying video featuring Sun Ra Arkestra’s James Stewart. The track is serene in mood, with lo-fi folk elements that transcend the typical conventions of the genre to incorporate elements of psychedelia. The video shows the juxtaposition between calm, soothing Philadelphia daytime and darker nightlife with colorful explosions. Vile recorded the single along with most of the forthcoming album in his newly created home studio, OKV Central, in Mount Airy neighborhood of Philadelphia. “When Waylon ...

Hear Kurt Vile and the Violators’ Fuzzed Up Velvet Underground Cover

In an early glimpse at a forthcoming Velvet Underground tribute album, indie rockers Kurt Vile and the Violators released their souped-up rendition of “Run Run Run,” the 1967 song Lou Reed penned on the back of a napkin. The song is a personal favorite of Vile’s, who mimicked Reed’s needling guitar solo in the song as a teenager. [embedded content] “So it was a cosmic thing … There is a direct connection to certain indie bands and beyond with the Velvets. That’s why the Velvets are a classic,” Vile said in a press statement. “[Their songs] can have doo-wop in there and things like that, but it can also have this jagged noisy thing, and it immediately let me feel like I could do anything.” I’ll Be Your Mirror: A Tribute to the Velvet Underground & Nico will arrive September 24, via Verv...
