Watch Green Day Cover Kiss’s ‘Rock and Roll All Nite’ at Hella Mega Tour Opener

Nearly two years after its initial announcement, the Hella Mega Tour finally kicked off last night in Dallas, TX. Green Day played a career-spanning set that appropriately included a cover (something Billie Joe Armstrong became well-accustomed to during the pandemic); however, it wasn’t a song that was featured on his No Fun Mondays album. It was Kiss’s “Rock and Roll All Nite.” And the band’s Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley both voiced their approval on social media. “‘Tonight In DALLAS!’ Another reason to love @GreenDay!” Stanley tweeted alongside footage from the performance. “@GreenDay⁩. In [Dallas] yesterday! Thank you, Gentlemen,” wrote Simmons, who also shared video. Green Day, along with Fall Out Boy and Weezer, will continue traversing the country throughout the summe...

The 50 Best Live Albums of the 1970s

The concert industry exploded in the 1970s, and the live album, a stopgap project once reserved for only the biggest artists, became a compulsory ritual and a pivotal moment for many artists. Live albums captured legendarily loud bands like The Who and The Ramones in their natural element. Once obscure regional acts like Bob Seger, KISS and Cheap Trick exploded into the mainstream with live albums. The Band, The Stooges, and Velvet Underground put their final gigs on vinyl. Jimi Hendrix, Neil Young (as his ongoing archive series shows), and Jackson Browne recorded entire sets of new songs onstage. The Grateful Dead released several official live albums (and continue to do so) that only made fans want to bootleg shows on their own more. With the 50th anniversary of a landmark live album, Th...

It’s Alive!: Our 1996 Kiss Cover Story

This article originally appeared in the August 1996 edition of SPIN. With Biography: KISStory airing tonight, we’re republishing the story here. Whoo-hoo, it’s a firehouse inside Gold’s Gym, a Hollywood sweatbox packed with waiters looking to be actors, actors looking to be bodybuilders, and bodybuilders looking at their reflection in the mirrored walls. In one corner, Paul Stanley, singer and rhythm guitarist in Kiss, and at 44 its youngest member, strains against the forces of nature as he hangs from the Gravitron. The man usually seen with a huge star across his face is, this Saturday afternoon, seeing stars. He may be masked for a living, but momentarily, dangling from the Gravitron, Stanley’s face contorts into a mask of pain.  “All right, let’s do it!” barks Anton, the offi...

The Four Weirdest Bands From the 1970s

Doug Brod has always wanted to write a book about music. It makes sense. He is a former SPIN editor in chief and has worked at Atlantic Records. But Brod wanted to find an angle that “has never been covered before and would actually surprise people and shed new light on something.” He does that splendidly in They Just Seem a Little Weird: How Kiss, Cheap Trick, Aerosmith, and Starz Remade Rock and Roll. Brod has always been a fan of ‘70s hard rock bands and these four are his favorite ones. “I’ve seen Cheap Trick probably 52 times. I’ve seen KISS a number of times, and Aerosmith and Starz, I’ve seen them a lot.” After doing some research, he found the connection between these four groups. “All of them are represented in a 1978 Gene Simmons solo album. In ’78, when KISS did four solo albums...

Paul Stanley Pledges to ‘KISS 2020 Goodbye’ With Explosive Sendoff

If music does indeed possess the healing powers so often ascribed to it, who better than four “masked” musical super-heroes to kick the dumpster fire that is 2020 to the curb? Slayer might be louder and meaner, U2 more spiritual, but for a feel-good rock ‘n’ roll all nite and party every day ethos that can help put the last 10 months in the rear-view, it’s KISS for the win. KISS guitarist/singer Paul Stanley promises that “if there’s a way we can kick 2020 in the ass with an eight-inch-heel to say goodbye to it, let’s do it!” Stanley is speaking from pre-Christmas band rehearsals in Los Angeles, conducted under “very strict COVID regulations.” The quartet is readying for a New Year’s Eve show that’s extravagant even by KISS standards. The global livestream concert is taking place at The Ro...

Bob Kulick, KISS and Lou Reed Guitarist, Dies at 70

Bob Kulick, the guitarist who performed live and in the studio with KISS, W.A.S.P., Meat Loaf, Michael Bolton, Diana Ross and Lou Reed, has died at the age of 70. His younger brother, Bruce (also a KISS guitarist who is performing in Kuarantine with Chris Jericho now) shared the news on social media Friday morning. “I am heartbroken to have to share the news of the passing of my brother Bob Kulick. His love of music, and his talent as a musician and producer should always be celebrated. I know he is at peace now, with my parents, playing his guitar as loud as possible. Please respect the Kulick Family’s privacy during this very sad time,” Bruce Kulick’s post read. I am heartbroken to have to share the news of the passing of my brother Bob Kulick. His love of music, and his talent as a musi...

Chris Jericho Forms ’80s KISS Cover Band Kuarantine

Chris Jericho was sitting at home in quarantine on April 11th like everyone else. He couldn’t wrestle (he’s one of AEW’s biggest attractions), and his band Fozzy wasn’t touring either. Then his pal Kent Slucher — Luke Bryan’s drummer — sent him a text with a drum part, and from there, things came together really quickly. “I said it sounds like KISS’ ‘No No No,’” Jericho told SPIN over the phone. “I asked him what he was doing and he said, ‘I’m just laying down some fun tracks with a friend of mine and we’re going to do a cover of the song.’ I asked him if they needed a singer and he said, ‘Absolutely.’ And that’s how it started. Calling themselves Kuarantine (get it?), Jericho and Slucher enlisted guitarist Joe McGinness and PJ Farley from hard rock band Trixter to fill out...
