Kansas-based indie rock power couple Kevin Morby and Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield have released covers today (July 21) of Broadcast’s “Tears in the Typing Pool” and Guided By Voices’ “The Goldheart Mountaintop Queen Directory” for a cause close to their hearts. Proceeds from the Bandcamp-exclusive tracks will benefit the Vote No Kansas PAC. The organization is working to prevent the passage of Kansas House Bill 2746, which would completely ban abortion in the state if a separate amendment is passed allowing the legislature to change the current legality of the procedure. “With the overturning of Roe v. Wade, the state of Kansas, where we live, has become a really important haven for bordering states in the fight for access to reproductive healthcare,” Morby and Crutchfield said in a sta...
Kevin Morby grew up in Overland Park, Kansas, a suburb roughly 20 minutes outside of downtown Kansas City. We’ve both lived here at different points in time, and as we chat in Union Station, a historic landmark in the heart of the city, we instantly make connections over high schools, street intersections, and formative memories. The indie-folk singer-songwriter has used places as a leitmotif throughout his music, and his fascination with them is evident. Many of his records draw direct inspiration from them. His debut album, 2013’s Harlem River, explores his move to New York City; 2016’s Singing Saw tethers itself to Los Angeles, where Morby moved after New York; 2020’s Sundowner pays tribute to Morby’s home in Kansas City and his eventual return to it. There’s something poetic about...
Kevin Morby has released a new single “Rock Bottom,” with an accompanying video this morning. The song comes from his forthcoming album This Is A Photograph which was announced earlier this month. Along with Morby himself, the “Rock Bottom” video features jewelry artist and TikTok star Ariel Kellogg along with Tim Heidecker. The playful video uses bright colors and modern scenes to display a modern, parodied version of a western. The heroes of the story can expect to elicit laughs from the viewers of the video as they sling bright pink nunchucks turning ordinary summertime settings into goofy battleground scenes. “For the video, director Johnny Eastlund and I decided we wanted to make an Ice Cream themed Nunchucking Western,” Morby said in a statement. “So I tagged in one of my Instagram n...
Kevin Morby announced his new album This Is A Photograph set to be released on May 13 via the label Dead Oceans. To accompany the album announcement, Morby also shared the album’s title track and accompanying video. In the title track, Morby sings in a spoken word fashion over a rustic guitar riff that crescendos into a funky breakdown. The video features vintage pictures from Morby’s life and family, flashing before the audience in a montage. Inspiration for this concept came from Morby flipping through a box of family photos in the basement of his Kansas City childhood home while his father was sick in the hospital. Somehow, some way, it’s baseball season again. Yes, already. Last year’s abbreviated run saw the Los Angeles Dodgers defeat the Tampa Bay Rays in six games to win their first World Series title in 32 years, something that Ben Gibbard predicted in our 2020 preview. As you can imagine, Dodgers fans — especially the ones below — are in great spirits heading into the 2021 season. So what does that mean about this year? Absolutely nothing. As COVID restrictions start to loosen and with more fans allowed back into stadiums, excitement is beginning to buzz, especially with our group of experts. Like last time, many are hopeful that this will be their team’s year. We searched far and wide to get predictions for the upcoming Major League Baseball season, creating a proper barometer of what these su...
Following the release of “Campfire” earlier this month, Kevin Morby is back with not one but two new singles off his upcoming album, Sundowner. First, there’s “Wander,” which is accompanied by a visual directed by Graham Shafer that’s set in Kansas and stars Waxahatchee’s Katie Crutchfield driving on an empty highway. [embedded content] “Wander is anchored by a lyric I’ve had in my head for the past decade,” Corby said in a statement. “The hook ‘I wonder as I wander why was I born in the wild wonder’ is even featured in the insert of the first Babies LP. The song is meant to steadily gain momentum before coming to an abrupt halt. It is the shortest song I’ve ever written, and is intended to be played on a loop.” Corby also released “Don’t Underestimate Midwest American Sun.” The lyric vide...
