Wye Oak’s Cover of Kate Bush’s ‘Running Up That Hill’ Finally Hits Streaming Services

Eight years after recording a cover of Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God)” for the AV Club’s Undercover series, Wye Oak has finally released the track on all digital streaming platforms. [embedded content][embedded content] Wye Oak frequently covered the song in concert from 2014 through 2018, but this is the first official release of this version, which was recorded at the AV Club’s Chicago offices. The group made a record five appearances on the late, great Undercover, putting their own spin on songs such as Danzig’s “Mother” and The Kings’ “Strangers.” Wye Oak’s most recent studio album is The Louder I Call, The Faster It Runs, which came out in 2018. A 10th anniversary edition of Civilian followed last year. In April, the group reissued its 2007 debut album If Children...

The 50 Best Albums of 1982

Looking back at 1982 in music, the headline is obvious: Thriller Sells A Bajillion Copies, Becomes World’s Biggest Album. But is it the year’s best album? Funny enough, Michael Jackson‘s sixth LP hardly even affected the charts that year — it snuck out in late November, just as Men at Work’s 1981 blockbuster, Business as Usual, began its commercial stranglehold in the U.S. Only one record on our list, Fleetwood Mac‘s chart-targeted Tusk follow-up, Mirage, hit No. 1 on the Billboard 200. (Doesn’t it seem weird, looking back, that Prince‘s 1999 peaked at No. 9?) Lots of fascinating shit was happening in 1982, and you didn’t always find it on the radio. On our list, we included everything from early hip-hop (Grandmaster Flash) to horror-punk (Misfits) to lo-fi synth-pop (Solid Space). Revisit...

Every Kate Bush Album, Ranked

In the U.K., Kate Bush has been a major star since her chart-topping debut single, 1978’s “Wuthering Heights,” and has grown into a beloved national institution over the last few decades. In America, she’s closer to a cult artist who reached her peak of mainstream popularity with 1985’s gold-selling Hounds of Love, which spawned her only Top 40 single, “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God).” Bush, who’s influenced a couple generations of indie rockers and art pop subversives, is beloved by everyone from Solange to Outkast’s Big Boi. She’s been an esteemed collaborator of artists like Prince and Peter Gabriel, and covers of her songs have been hits for Maxwell and Meg Myers. But she doesn’t always get her proper respect: This year, she was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame...

Kate Bush Talks ‘Extraordinary’ Stranger Things Sync in Rare Interview

Kate Bush gave her first interview today (June 22) on BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour about the improbable resurgence of her 1985 song “Running Up That Hill” following its prominent usage in the current fourth season of Netflix’s Stranger Things, calling it “just extraordinary. I thought that the track would get some attention, but I just never imagined that it’d be anything like this. It’s so exciting that it’s quite shocking really, isn’t it? The whole world has gone mad.” The song has rocketed to the top of the charts around the world and reached No. 4 on The Billboard Hot 100, Bush’s first-ever top 5 appearance on that tally. “The thought of all these really young people hearing the song for the first time and discovering it, well, I think it’s very special,” Bush, 63, told presenter Emma B...

Kate Bush on ‘Running Up That Hill’ Reaching New UK Chart Peak: ‘How Utterly Brilliant!’

When Kate Bush released “Running Up That Hill” in 1985 there’s no way she could’ve known how successful it would be nearly 40 years later. But with the help of Stranger Things using the song as a key part of the plot in Season 4, the Hounds of Love single is climbing higher on the charts than its initial release. After sharing a rare statement about the track’s revival last week, Bush is back with more joyous words after “Running Up That Hill” soared to No. 2 on the UK chart (it peaked at No. 3 upon its initial release). “Running Up That Hill has just gone to No 2 in the UK charts and No. 1 in Australia, New Zealand, Switzerland, Sweden….How utterly brilliant!” Bush wrote on her official website. “It’s hard to take in the speed at which this has all been happening since the ...

Kate Bush Reacts to Stranger Things Reviving ‘Running Up That Hill’

Kate Bush issued a rare statement to address Stranger Things including her song “Running Up That Hill” in its fourth season. “You might’ve heard that the first part of the fantastic, gripping new series of Stranger Things has recently been released on Netflix. It’s all really exciting! Thanks very much to everyone who has supported the song. I wait with bated breath for the rest of the series in July.” Bush is not one to license her music for film and television; however, her persona...

The 40 Greatest Music Video Artists

Music videos are the perfect bastard child of art and commerce, even more than pop music itself. A promotional visual accompaniment to a popular song doesn’t need a coherent narrative (although on rare occasions, they do). It just needs to suit the song, sell the record, and possibly make the artist look cool. But since the launch of MTV 40 years ago this week, a select few recording artists have helped raise music videos to an art form — sometimes by accident, and sometimes by carefully curating the work of brilliant directors like Mark Romanek, Hype Williams, and Spike Jonze. Here are 40 artists from the last four decades that helped video kill the radio star. 40. Rock Hall of Fame 2021 Nominations: The Snubs, Surprises, and Long Shots

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame traditionally announces its annual slate of nominees in October and narrows it down to a set of official inductees in December. But like just about everything else, the Rock Hall’s schedule was disrupted last year by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the May induction ceremony concert delayed and downsized to a taped HBO special that aired in November. But this week, the gatekeepers in Cleveland finally announced the slate of 16 acts that will be narrowed down later this year to the five or seven artists who encompass the Class of 2021: Mary J. The 35 Best Albums of the Last 35 Years

Let’s face it: With most “Best Albums” lists, you know the broad strokes of the ranking before you even click. Part of that predictability is understandable: Most iconic records earn their reputation. But these rankings shouldn’t be fossilized, and a shit-ton of amazing LPs have been shoved aside in the pursuit of maintaining the status quo. We didn’t ignore the unimpeachable on our list — you’ll see plenty of the staples you’ve come to expect. But we also hope we’ll spark your curiosity and encourage you to hunt for a title you may have missed over the last 35 years. 35.
