South Korea Amends Law to Let BTS Postpone Compulsory Military Service

Given that BTS accounts for $5 billion (!) of South Korea’s gross GDP, members of #BTSArmy weren’t the only ones worryingly counting down the days until the K-pop group’s members became of age and would be forced to enlist into the military, as required by the country’s constitution. Well, as luck would have it, South Korea’s National Assembly has just passed legislation revising South Korea’s Military Service Act. According to the New York Times, the revised law allows top K-pop stars to postpone military service until they turn 30 — two years later than originally required. Additionally, K-pop entertainers who have received government metals for their cultural impact can now apply for deferment from the military. The timing of the legislation is by no means coincidental: BTS’s oldest mem...

BTS Score Second No. 1 Album This Year with BE

BTS’s new album BE has debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 albums chart. BE bowed with 242,000 equivalent album units, Billboard’s all-in-one metric that combines album sales and different measures of streaming. These strong numbers were buoyed by “Dynamite”, the global smash that set records as the first K-pop single to reach No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. This is the second time the Bangtan Boys have achieved the top position this year following the success of February’s Map of the Soul: 7. The achievement makes them the first group to land two No. 1 albums in 2020, and second act overall. But even more impressive is the fact BE marks BTS’s fifth No. 1 album in the US in a little over two years and six months. The only group to have accomplished that...

BTS Bring “Life Goes On”, Holiday Cheer to Corden: Watch

On Monday, BTS fans were gifted the best holiday present of them all: the Bangtan Boys under their Christmas tree. Following appearances on Good Morning America and the 2020 American Music Awards, the K-pop megastars visited The Late Late Show with James Corden, where they performed their latest single “Life Goes On” in extraordinary festive fashion. The group’s virtual setup was made to look like a series of cozy living rooms decked out in seasonal decor, complete with Christmas trees, wreaths, candles, and even indoor snow. All seven members of BTS — J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, V, RM, and Suga — were of course dressed for the occasion, outfitted in toasty sweaters, cardigans, and hoodies. We now clearly need an entire merch line dedicated to BTS Christmas. Replay the video down be...

BTS Perform “Dynamite”, Talk Grammy Nomination on Corden: Watch

Fresh off their first musical Grammy nod, the superstar K-pop group BTS dialed in to The Late Late Show with James Corden to discuss the Grammy Awards and perform their newly-nominated song “Dynamite”. Despite Corden’s introduction touting their “first ever Grammy nomination,” the Bangtan Boys had previously been up for Best Recording Package in 2019 for their album Love Yourself: Tear. But this is the first time that J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, V, RM, and Suga were recognized for their musical contributions, and they certainly seemed excited. Corden showed a video of the members watching as their name was called, complete with hooting, clapping, and jumping off the couch. But one member, V, merely sat there in shock. As he explained, “The reactions were different for each...

BTS Score First Music Grammy Nomination for “Dynamite”

Nominations for the 2021 Grammy Awards were revealed on Tuesday, and BTS have scored themselves a big one: Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “Dynamite”. This marks their first music-focused Grammy nomination, and their second overall following a Best Recording Package nod in 2019 for their album Love Yourself: Tear. Additionally, it marks the first-ever performance Grammy nomination for a K-pop group. The septet — that’s J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook, V, RM, and Suga — is set to face off against a category stacked with pop royalty. The other contenders include “Rain on Me” by Lady Gaga and Ariana Grande; “UN DIA” by Bad Bunny, Dua Lipa, and J Balvin; “Intentions” from Justin Bieber and Quavo; and “Exile” by Taylor Swift and Bon Iver. “Dynamite”, the lead single off new album BE, quick...

Why Everyone Is Becoming a BTS Fan in 2020

If you’re not familiar with K-Pop global crossover sensation BTS, congratulations to you and your presumably peaceful life without the internet. Here’s the rundown: since their debut seven years ago, the group known as BTS (made up of members RM, Jin, SUGA, J-Hope, Jimin, V, and Jungkook) have broken countless records, successfully tapped into worldwide markets no act has ever captured before, and stolen the hearts of millions of devoted fans (this writer included). In August, BTS landed their latest comeback with the incendiary “Dynamite”, a track that has propelled the group to uncharted heights, including debuting at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, remaining there for a second week and now returning for a third. BTS Perform “Dynamite” at the 2020 Billboard Music Awards: Watch

If you thought K-pop couldn’t get any bigger than it already was, just look at the year BTS have been having. The septet became multi-millionaires when their label, Big Hit, went public; they took over The Tonight Show for an entire week; and their most recent single, “Dynamite”, became not only their first No. 1 hit on the Billboard Hot 100, but the first song from a Korean group to ever take the top spot. That’s on top of the two LPs they’ve already released this year, Map of the Soul: 7 and the Japanese-language companion LP Map of the Soul: 7 – The Journey. On Wednesday night, they continued their mega-success by taking home the Billboard Music Awards’ Top Social Artist trophy — for the fourth year in a row. To celebrate, BTS delivered a performance all the way from South Korea. In wha...

Song of the Week: BLACKPINK Find Their Own Roar on “Lovesick Girls”

Song of the Week breaks down and talks about the song we just can’t get out of our head each week. Find these songs and more on our Spotify New Sounds playlist. Note to self (and anyone in the same camp). It’s time to stop underestimating K-Pop. What once felt like a fad to those of us late to the genre now pulls in fans and numbers in the States like only a small handful of hip-hop and pop stars can boast. Take BLACKPINK for instance. Perhaps once in the shadow of male K-Pop world-beaters BTS, the girl group dropped their debut Korean-language studio album, matter-of-factly titled The Album, last Friday, and already the video for new single “Lovesick Girls”, released the day before, has racked up over 94 million YouTube views. Lord knows what that figure will be by the time I finish this ...
