Jurassic World resuscitated Steven Spielberg’s beloved dinosaur franchise and spawned two blockbuster sequels, but according to Xbox creator Seamus Blackley, the film began as a video game. In a Twitter thread that began on July 22nd, Blackley explained that in 2012 he began developing a new Jurassic Park video game at the behest of Spielberg, who was hoping to bring back the franchise. Blackley — who had created the failed Jurassic Park-themed game Trespasser in 1998 and had since begun financing games for the Creative Arts Agency — thought a new project could make up for the past “skid mark,” so he made a pitch trailer for a story called Jurassic World. “I wrote a story about dinosaurs on Isla Sorna and the research sites escaping, and about how humans had to come to terms...
The Pitch: In a twist no one could have possibly seen coming, it turns out that releasing a wide variety of extinct species into a global ecosystem might have some negative repercussions on said global ecosystem. That’s where Jurassic World Dominion begins, four years following the events of Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, which is almost enough time for most of the world to get used to the spread of dinosaurs across the planet. But funnily enough, the most dangerous creatures in this brave new world aren’t dinosaurs — they’re bugs. Specifically, the prehistoric-sized locusts that have begun tearing through the world’s crops, which if left unchecked could have extinction-level repercussions for literally every living creature. Fortunately, Dr. Ellie Sattler (Laura Dern) is doing her best t...
Before the year even started, Jurassic World: Dominion was postponed to 2022, but fans don’t have to wait any longer to get a glimpse at the latest Jurassic Park installment. Today, Universal Pictures released a five-minute prologue video that sets up the events of the dinosaur sequel. Directed by Colin Trevorrow, who helmed the franchise’s original 2015 revival before J.A. Bayona filled in for 2018’s Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom, the clip offers original content not found in the upcoming film. It starts off 65 million years in the past, when dinosaurs were the dominant creatures on the planet. For several minutes, near silence soundtracks our look at the animals as they live peacefully, swimming in rivers and hunting for food. It’s an eerily immersive clip; shoutout to the eff...
Jurassic World: Dominion may have been pushed back to 2022, but Jeff Goldblum has given thirsty fans quite the gift to tide them over until then. On Instagram late Friday, the actor recreated his iconic Jurassic Park pose, unbuttoned shirt, oiled up chest, and all. Goldblum reproduced the memorable 1993 shot as a reward to fans who registered to vote ahead of Election Day next month. “WOW! Thank you to everyone who used my @HeadCount page to make sure that you’re #GoodToVote!” Goldblum wrote on Instagram. “Nearly 3,000 of you are ready for this November’s election. Here’s your reward… how time flies.” Indeed, it’s been 27 long years since Dr. Ian Malcolm first posed ever so seductively. The fact that Goldblum, who turns 68 in just a few weeks, still looks this good should probably be a cri...
Life finds a way … as do big summer blockbusters amidst a pandemic. Alas, Universal and Amblin Entertainment have announced that they’re delaying the release of Jurassic World: Dominion by a whole year. The highly anticipated sequel will stomp away from its July 11th, 2021 release date all the way to June 10th, 2022. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dominion is “a huge priority for NBCUniversal” that involves “theme park tie-ins, merchandising partnerships, live events and more.” With so much uncertainty going into 2021, the two parties “want to ensure that deadlines for retail partners can be met.” Production is currently underway at London’s Pinewood Studios and reportedly three weeks away from completion. Back in August, the expansive shoot was profiled by The New York Times for bei...
Blockbuster Month has come to an end. All throughout July, Consequence of Sound celebrated the blockbuster experience and the true titans of the genre with a variety of features that dug deep into the greatest hits of Hollywood — from popcorn classics to underrated gems. There were lists, there were op-eds, there were interviews, and there was plenty of merchandise. It was a truly spirited event that saw many of our strongest writers buckle under the whims of nostalgia. Thank you, Mr. Spielberg! Fortunately, like all of our old VHS tapes, you can revisit that magic below — and you should. After all, our favorite blockbusters aren’t going anywhere, especially not as Covid-19 continues to keep new releases at bay. So, clean out that popcorn bowl, make another batch, and enjoy the show (again...
Netflix is getting prehistoric in August 2020. The first three Jurassic Park films are stomping over to the streaming giant, leaving the newly minted confines of Peacock only 17 days after launching. That kind of coup would impress even the likes of Ian Malcolm. That’s not all! Those flicks join an onslaught of legitimate popcorn classics in The Addams Family, The NeverEnding Story, Mad Max, A Knight’s Tale, and Seabiscuit. Okay, maybe that last one is more wine and cheese than buttered popcorn… Hey, speaking of the wine and cheese crowd, Netflix is also bringing some high class cerebral fare. There’s An Education, Being John Malkovich, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind, and one of our personal favorites in Nightcrawer. In terms of originals, Netflix’s premiering a ton of documentaries...
Life finds a way, and so do blockbusters. According to Variety, the original Jurassic Park trilogy is battering down the fences and stomping over to Netflix in August. Like those birds at the end of Steven Spielberg’s 1993 original, the series is flocking away from NBCUniversal’s Peacock after only 17 days, making it quite a coup for Netflix. It’s also just downright timely. After all, Jurassic Park has been back in the box office, thanks to repertory screenings at drive-ins across America. What’s more, Consequence of Sound just named it the single greatest summer blockbuster of all time. As this writer wrote in his glowing blurb: Decades later, and hyperbole be damned, Jurassic Park remains the standard for comparison. It’s in the DNA. This is a blockbuster about creating a blockbust...
