According to reports, Governor Kay Ivey sent out a memo declaring that Juneteenth will be a holiday for state workers in Alabama. The memo was circulated earlier this month, decreeing that offices will be closed on Monday, June 20th as Juneteenth – which is normally celebrated on June 19th. Juneteenth 2022 marks the liberation of Black Americans from slavery 157 years ago. In celebration, The Roots, Killer Mike, Mickey Guyton, and more will take the stage at the Hollywood Bowl on Sunday, June 19th for a special concert that will be broadcast live on CNN. Other artists on the roster for the evening include Earth Wind & Fire, Robert Glasper, Jhené Aiko, Anthony Hamilton, Billy Porter, Lucky Daye, Mary Mary, and Michelle Williams. IKEA is in hot water after one of its stores in Atlanta featured fried chicken, watermelon, mac n cheese, collard greens, and candied yams as menu items its employees can enjoy in honor of Juneteenth. All foods that are stereotypically associated with Black people. According to TMZ, an email was sent out to employees last week alerting them that a special menu was going to be rolled out “to honor the perseverance of Black Americans and acknowledge the progress yet to be made.” The reaction to the email was not positive.
