Julianne Moore’s 10 Best Performances

Top Performances is a recurring feature in which we definitively handpick the very best performances from an iconic actor or actress. This article was originally published in 2015.  We meet again, Miss Moore. Congratulations are in order for Julianne Moore. On Sunday night, she won a well-deserved, and long-hoped-for Oscar for Still Alice. She brought infinite grace, humanity, and incredibly affable qualities to a person stuck in a dire situation, and Moore walked away from the movie with Best Actress at the Oscars, for what might be remembered as her seminal role — not to mention one of the surest bets in recent Oscar history. But is it Moore’s best? Moore’s had an exhaustively diverse career, with one uniting quality: She’s really, really good in everything she’s in, and everybody l...

Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard Star in Trailer for Jesse Eisenberg’s When You Finish Saving the World: Watch

Jesse Eisenberg has written and directed his first feature film, When You Finish Saving the World. The coming-of-age comedy-drama stars Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard as a mother and son caught up in complicated times, and a trailer for the project is out now. In When You Finish Saving the World, Evelyn (Moore) is the do-gooder mom to Ziggy (Wolfhard), a fuckboy more interested in Internet fame than solving the world’s problems. The trailer, however, shows the characters shift toward each other’s interests — particularly when Evelyn meets a sensitive teenage boy at her job and Ziggy develops a crush on a “brilliant and politically conscious young woman at his high school,” as a press release puts it. “When you were a little boy, you were my little ally,” Moore says in the ...

Sundance Review: In Jesse Eisenberg’s When You Finish Saving the World, Everyone Loses

This review is part of our coverage of the 2022 Sundance Film Festival. The Pitch: What happens when tensions between an equally oblivious mother and son (Julianne Moore and Finn Wolfhard, respectively) finally boil over? In Jesse Eisenberg’s directorial debut, the answer is, unfortunately, sort of nothing. There’s something to be said for slice-of-life films like this one, adapted from Eisenberg’s 2020 audio drama of the same name and co-produced by Emma Stone and husband Dave McCary. The film raises plenty of interesting questions, particularly around the ideas of altruism, actual moral goodness in a world perpetually concerned with what looks good, and the tried and true theme of generational divide. The simmering story only runs 88 minutes (a dream!), but, throughout that runtime, When...

Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore to Star in Todd Haynes’ New Film May December

The present will crumble under the weight of the past in Todd Haynes’ new film May December. As Deadline reports, it stars the timeless talents of Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore. The story follows a Hollywood starlet (Portman) as she travels to Maine to prepare for a biographical film based on a real-life woman (Moore). Two decades prior, Moore’s character became a tabloid sensation when she married a man 23 years younger. While she and her now-36-year-old husband prepare to send their twin daughters off to college, the actress probes the family’s dynamic, and her outsider’s perspective causes a radical reappraisal of this May-December relationship. The screenplay comes from Samy Burch, based on a story by Burch and Alex Mechanik. In a statement, Haynes said, “What ...
