The Beatles’ Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, along with Sean and Julian Lennon, remember their bandmate and father on the day when, 40 years ago, John Lennon was shot and killed in front of his New York City apartment, in what news outlets at the time called “an unspeakable tragedy.” A deranged fan, Mark David Chapman, killed the former Beatle with two gunshots. Lennon’s Yoko Ono was by his side at the time and the singer was only 40. In 2020, Chapman was denied parole for the 11th time; he’ll next be eligible in 2022. On social media, McCartney said, “a sad sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world.” A sad sad day but remembering my friend John with the great joy he brought to the world. I will always be proud and happy to have known ...
The evening John Lennon was shot and killed, he signed a copy of Double Fantasy, his album with Yoko Ono, for Mark David Chapman — the man who would pull the trigger five hours later. Now, that piece of tragic history is going up for auction. The signed album is part of Goldin Auctions’ holiday auction, which opens Nov. 23. As the listing points out, the front of the record features Lennon’s signature in blue ink on Ono’s neck, with the year “1980” inscribed below. It’s also smattered with police markings, since the album was submitted as evidence during Lennon’s murder investigation. Bidding starts at $400,000. In August, Chapman was denied parole for the 11th time during his 20 years-to-life sentence on the grounds that Ono and her children wou...

Earlier this year, Sonic Youth’s Lee Ranaldo released a collaborative new album with Raul Refree and also launched his own Bandcamp page where he shared a bunch of rarities. Now, the guitarist has unveiled yet another buried gem from his catalog: 1998’s Amarillo Ramp (for Robert Smithson). In conjunction with that release, Ranaldo shared a video for a cover he did of John Lennon’s “Isolation,” which, like the others who have tackled the song in recent weeks, feels fitting. Here’s what Ranaldo had to say about the song: “During this time of enforced global confinement – the ‘planetary pause’, as I’ve been calling it, I’ve been sorting thru some old releases, and came across my version of John Lennon’s‘Isolation’, which was recorded back in 1991 and released on the 1998 album Amarillo R...
