John Leguizamo Calls Out James Franco’s Casting as Fidel Castro: “He Ain’t Latino!”

John Leguizamo wasn’t shy about sharing his thoughts when it came to James Franco’s recent controversial casting as Fidel Castro. “How is this still going on?” the actor wrote on his Instagram. “How is Hollywood excluding us but stealing our narratives as well? No more appropriation Hollywood and streamers! Boycott! This F’d up! Plus seriously difficult story to tell without aggrandizement, which would be wrong! I don’t got a [problem] with Franco but he ain’t Latino!” The Encanto star shared his unfiltered thoughts alongside a screenshot of a Deadline story confirming Franco’s role in the upcoming film Alina of Cuba opposite Mía Maestro and Ana Villafañe. The movie will be the former Oscar host’s second project after taking an extended break from acting in the wake of being sued by two of...

John Leguizamo Says He “Stayed Out of the Sun” So He Could Book More Roles

John Leguizamo acknowledged he used to stay out of the sun as much as possible in a deliberate effort to make booking roles easier as a “light-skinned” Latino. In a recent interview with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, Leguizamo, who born in Colombia, said, “I stayed out of the sun so I could work. I definitely would not go in the sun for years. It was a conscious thing because I could work. And all the Latinos that made it so far, a lot of them were all light-skinned.” “[Darker-skinned Latinos] don’t get a shot, you know,” the actor continued. “So, there’s a lot of things we got to deal with in Hollywood, and we got to fix, and we got to speak out and we got to speak up.” Advertisement Related Video According to a USC study, only 7 percent of the top-grossing films from 2...

Jeffrey Wright to Voice Batman in New Podcast Series

HBO Max is developing a Batman spin-off series for TV, and apparently they’re crafting a Batman miniseries for your ears, too. Say hello to Batman: The Audio Adventures, a new podcast by HBO Max starring Jeffrey Wright as the Caped Crusader. Don’t expect it to get too dark, however, because the roll call also includes comedic actors like Seth Meyers, Jason Sudeikis, and dozens more. Written and directed by Dennis McNicholas, Batman: The Audio Adventures is a multi-episode series that’s putting “a comedic take” on the Dark Knight, notes The Hollywood Reporter. It’s separate from DC’s multi-year deal with Spotify — which includes the new Batman Unburied podcast written by David S. Goyer — and as such it will hit WarnerMedia’s streaming service sometime in 2021. To help draw out the laug...

The Mandalorian Season 2 Returns with Easter Eggs and Familiar Western Riffs: Review

The Pitch: When we last left Mando (Pedro Pascal), he’d just been tasked with a holy Mandalorian mission to track down Baby Yoda The Child’s species and return him to them — a mighty feat given that no one’s ever seen anything like him. Still, even though he’s left the bounty hunting life behind (for now), his quest will still take him to the farthest corners of the galaxy, righting wrongs along the way. While Season 2 will surely have more answers to the show’s broader, arc-based questions, the series premiere, “The Marshal”, kicks off Disney+’s hit with a no-frills space Western of the classic mold. Seeking a Mandalorian rumored to be on Tatooine (the identity of whom any self-respecting Star Wars fan can piece together), Mando heads to a remote mining settlement on the desert plane...

John Leguizamo on Latin Trump Supporters: “Latin People for Republicans Are Like Roaches for Raid”

John Leguizamo isn’t a fan of Donald Trump, and he doesn’t understand why any self-respecting Latinx person would be either. During a new interview with Bill Maher, the actor described Trump supporters who are Hispanic and Latinx as “self-defeating and selfish,” going so far as to say, “Latin people for Republicans are like roaches for Raid.” Leguizamo appeared virtually on HBO’s Real Time With Bill Maher this past Friday to respond to a report that suggests President Trump is popular among young Latinx voters “because of the machismo factor.” The When They See Us actor didn’t hold in sharing his contempt for Trump or fellow Latinx people who vote for him. “Latin people for Republicans are like roaches for Raid. Let’s get real. I just feel like there’s a level of self-hate or just lack of ...
