The Tragedy of Macbeth, Joel Coen’s new Shakespeare adaptation starring Denzel Washington and Frances McDormand, premieres on Apple TV+ on January 14th. In anticipation, a new trailer has been revealed and can be seen below. Written and directed by Coen, The Tragedy of Macbeth was shot entirely on sound stages and in black-and-white. The cast also includes Corey Hawkins, Moses Ingram, and Ralph Ineson. The A24 and IFC production initially premiered at the 2021 New York Film Festival in September before receiving a limited theatrical screening over Christmas. It’ll be available exclusively on Apple TV+ starting January 14th. This review is part of our coverage of the 2021 New York Film Festival. The Pitch: The Coen Brothers plus Shakespeare — whaddaya need, a roadmap? Actually, you might; or at least a program note to explain why The Tragedy of Macbeth has only one Coen on hand. It’s not a retro affectation that Joel Coen is taking sole director credit, as he used to on the joint Coen projects (until 2004’s The Ladykillers, Joel took “director” and Ethan handled “producer,” even though they were always really doing both). Luca Guadagnino Says Hello to Universal’s Scarface Remake
Luca Guadagnino will soon prove the world is his. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Call Me By Your Name filmmaker has signed on to direct Universal’s long-gestating remake of Scarface. It gets better: Joel and Ethan Coen wrote the latest draft of the screenplay, topping a laundry list of contributors that includes Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer (Miss Balla), Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton), and Paul Attanasio (Quiz Show), among others. The story will reportedly be set in Los Angeles. Guadagnino is no stranger to the remake game, having helmed the rather superb reimagining of Dario Argento’s Suspiria back in 2018.
