Joe Keery’s Saturn Return

It’s just after midnight and Chicago’s Bottom Lounge is packed. Some kids are wearing ‘Hellfire’ merch shirts, referring to the fictional Dungeons and Dragons club from Netflix’s multi-Emmy nominated thriller Stranger Things. It’s the rare occasion where love for a TV show spills into support for a real band — Joe Keery’s psychedelic rock project called DJO (pronounced “Joe.”) At that moment, Keery, who plays heartthrob-with-a-heart of gold Steve Harrington on the series, steps onto the stage looking like the antithesis of his character in wiry glasses and matted brown hair. The room erupts.  Before Stranger Things swept him up to Los Angeles, Keery lived in Chicago until 2018. Before fame, he was somewhat of a fixture in the Chicago DIY scene, performing in the indie band called Post...

Djo (Stranger Things’ Joe Keery) Shares New Single “Gloom”: Stream

Djo, the solo music outlet for Stranger Things star Joe Keery, has unveiled the new single “Gloom” from his upcoming second solo album, Decide. The track finds the singer-songwriter resolutely “ready to go” as he lists off a number of irreverent excuses to make an exit. The pulsing, fuzzed-out beat pops and snaps along with Keery’s blunt quips like “Your girlfriend scares me/ She’s got bad breath,” and it all builds up to a bracing end as his way out nears. Stream “Gloom” below. “Gloom” has been preceded by the ebullient mid-June single “Change,” which was revealed along with the announcement of the new album. Decide arrives September 16th via AWAL Recordings and follows Keery’s 2019 solo debut Twenty Twenty. Djo (aka Joe Keery) Unveils New Song “Keep Your Head Up”: Stream

Joe Keery introduced us to his Djo musical moniker last year with his debut album, Twenty Twenty. Today, the Stranger Things actor returns with a new single encouraging you to “Keep Your Head Up”. A funky psych-pop tune that nods to George Clinton, the track aligns Djo with fellow experimental contemporaries like Jacob Collier. A heavy beat with a fat synth drone loop under a cacophony of dancing piano notes, swinging horns, and dazzling electronics in an intoxicating if heady mix. “Got to love yourself/ Go ahead touch yourself,” Keery sings on the opening verse. “Take that time alone before your heart belongs to someone else.” Take a listen via the “Keep Your Head Up” visualizer below. Editors’ Picks Keery will join The Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne today (Wednesday, September 9...

Joe Keery Plays an Evil Driver in Trailer for Spree: Watch

Joe Keery is back, but not to save the day. The Stranger Things star is ditching his Hawkins hero guise for a devilish new look in the forthcoming rideshare thriller Spree. The film hits VOD on August 14th via RLJE Films and they’ve just dropped a trailer. Directed by Eugene Kotlyarenko, Keery plays Kurt, a 23-year-old rideshare driver that’s hungrier than ever to go viral. So hungry, in fact, that he’s devised an uncompromising scheme that takes advantage of his passengers. Judging from the trailer below, Spree appears to find itself in the found-footage genre as Keery’s character has wired his car with a number of cameras to capture the mayhem. Because of this, there’s an air of authenticity to the chaos. Editors’ Picks In addition to Keery, the film stars a who’s who of cast membe...
