It might be the oldest rock’n’roll cliche in the book: that being in a band is akin to being married, in a relationship or part of a family. When bands break up, the word “divorce” gets thrown around pretty regularly to describe the circumstances (in fact, it’s the word John Lennon used when he left The Beatles in 1969). That unavoidable and often uncomfortable interpersonal dynamic may explain why not many well-known bands prominently feature actual family members. Sure, there are a few outliers: 88-year-old Willie Nelson has been backed by his sons Lukas and Micah for two decades, while then-teenager Wolfgang Van Halen more than capably assumed bass playing duties alongside his guitar-slinging dad Eddie and drummer Uncle Alex when Van Halen reunited with David Lee Roth in 2007. But for W...

Jeff Tweedy is the latest artist to contribute to Sub Pop Singles Club. The Wilco frontman shared a pair of singles titled “C’mon America” and “UR-60 Unsent.” The Sub Pop series includes limited, subscription-only singles by an eclectic array of artists including John Waters, Duma, LIDS, Washed Out, Hand Habits, BNH Deluxe, among others. The Wilco frontman contributed his two tracks from separate batches of previously unreleased material. In addition to Tweedy, TV Priest shared a pair of new singles as part of the Singles Club. “‘All Thing’ is a subversion of the Anglo Saxon word for parliament or meeting (Althing or Thing),” TV Priest’s Charlie Drinkwater says. “It asks questions about the power of groupthink and ideas of nationhood that have become static, non-inclusive, and singular.” T...

One of the participants is none other than Jeff Tweedy. Even for the most diehard fans of Pawnee, Indiana’s thriving rock scene, it’s been quite some time since the world last heard from Scott Tanner, the enigmatic frontman of one of the most popular bands in the city’s history, Land Ho! But today, the talented singer and guitarist who bears more than a passing resemblance to Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy re-emerged for the first time since the band’s reunion at 2014’s Pawnee/Eagleton Unity Concert with a brand new track, “Cold Water.” Of course, some may remember the group from their brief appearances on the documentary series Parks and Recreation, which makes sense considering that the new track from Tanner will appear exclusively on Mouse Rat’s new album, The Awesome Album (Aug. 27 via Dualtone Music Group and Entertainment 720). But A...

Wilco singer/songwriter Jeff Tweedy will release How to Write One Song, billed as a “candid and fascinating primer on the art form he knows best,” on Oct. 13 on Dutton. The new book, which follows up his 2019 memoir, Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back), promises to reveal the “the behind-the-scenes process, and the joy he gets from making something new.” Tweedy explains the tome’s raison d’etre: “The feeling I get when I write—the sense that time is simultaneously expanding and disappearing—that I’m simultaneously more me and also free of me—is the main reason I wanted to put my thoughts on songwriting down in book form to share with everyone so inclined.” How to Write One Song contains actionable and practical songwriting tips, including tips on overcoming se...
On June 18, Jeff Tweedy announced that he would start donating 5% of his writer royalties to racial justice organizations and urged other artists to do the same. And in a new interview, Tweedy explains not only its importance but also how this promise can turn into an industry-wide mission. “It’s not an exaggeration to say our culture wouldn’t be our culture without black genius,” the Wilco singer told Rolling Stone. “There’s a shameful history there, and there are things the industry should still be ashamed of. There are things about the way Black artists are treated today that are different and unfair. It isn’t an equal playing field.” He plans to start pushing for these donations with BMI, which currently allows artists to do this on a “one-off basis” but are looking into a sustainable ...
